A Strange Commission, a five minute freewrite

The letter arrived in a plain envelope, my name and address neatly printed in capital letters, in ink, on the back it was written "hand delivered". I opened it, with curiosity, and not a little bit of anxiety.

I wasn't used to receiving post. Most of my business was done via email, sometimes via a mobile messaging service. I couldn't remember the last time I had a commission via the postal service. So I was expecting the worse. Perhaps one of the debt collectors who'd been chasing me up and down the country for years, had caught up with me. But no. I was relieved to see it was work.

And well paid work at that.

"Dear sir, I have a job for you. It is unusual, potentially dangerous and therefore very well paid." There followed a figure that made me quiver with excitement.

Perhaps, I would be able to pay off all my debts and finally settle down. Unusual work, dangerous work: that didn't bother me!
