"I need this!" the woman whispers to the man that accompanies her.
The shopkeeper tries not to show his delight and sidles up to them to offer her encouragement without trying too hard. It is his experience that some clients are put off when they are confronted with the Hard Sell.
The man - perhaps her brother, maybe her boyfriend or husband (the shopkeeper notes neither woman nor man wears a wedding band, but that means nothing these days) - nods, but does not say anything. The shopkeeper can tell that he wants to leave. Perhaps due to boredom, or maybe because he doesn't want to spend money. It is difficult to tell.
"That would look very nice on you," the shopkeeper says, gently to the woman. "Would you like to try it on?"
She hesitates but nods as the shopkeeper picks up the necklace and unhooks it. She turns around and allows him to place it around her neck. The man moves away, disinterested. She moves to the mirror and turns this way and that.
