you always fold your shirts twice.
Or why you keep that broken watch,
the one that stopped last spring.
I've never asked about the scar
above your left eyebrow
or why sometimes you wake up
at 3 AM to stare at walls.
I've never asked what makes you
smile at strangers' dogs
but walk the other way
when friends call out your name.
I've never asked because
I'm scared the answer might
be something I should know
but never thought to learn.
I've never asked,
and now it feels too late
to start the questions
I should've asked years ago.
