"Hey guys, I'm Jerry, nice to meet you," I said. The other sports equipment gave me a snobby look like 'who do you think you are?' There was the deflated basketball, the worn tennis ball, the stretched skipping rope and the bent Hula hoop.

I was round, black and white and beaming with opportunity.

Everyday the quiet serenity would be disburbed by the piericing sound of a bell. This would soon be followed by the sounds of joyful screaming and footsteps to where I sat in the sports equipment cage.

The children would pick me up and take me to a big green field with lots of grass. There they would throw me, kick me, roll me and even head butt me. It felt great to be alive! I was living the dream.

My world would come alive between the bells. The children would fight over me and try to keep me as long as they could. It felt nice to be wanted. Then the bell would ring and I was back with the other equipment, readying myself for my next adventure.

My life was going great.

One day I got kicked high up into the sky. As I was falling, I got caught by a huge outstretched hand. I lay there momentarily. "What an amazing view" I wondered, "Is this what it is like to be a bird?" The wind blew and I fell to the ground.

A boy picked me up and looked at me with a sad look. "oh no, the ball's got a hole in it!" he gasped. He threw me into the cage. I lay motionless, as air seeped from my sagging body. I wondered, "Is this what it feels like to be a 'has been' and to not be wanted anymore?"
