Conceive: From Wild Idea to Reality!

IMG-20250211-WA0000.jpg

I remember the first time I heard the word conceive—not in English class, nor in a literature book that was so thick it made me feel lazy. It was uttered by a newlywed friend who said excitedly, “We just conceive our first child!” At the time, I just nodded, trying to look like I understood, but inside I was like: Conceive? This isn’t just about pregnancy, is it?

Over time, I’ve come to realize that conceive is a beautiful word. It can mean to imagine, to create, or to conceive of something. Like when I’m sitting in a cafe with a nearly cold cup of coffee, staring at a blank screen, trying to conceive of a brilliant idea that somehow gets stuck. It’s like trying to catch a butterfly with your bare hands—as soon as you get it, it flies away.

But isn’t that how it all starts? With a vague idea that slowly takes shape. Thomas Edison conceived the idea for the light bulb amidst countless experiments. J.K. Rowling invented the world of Harry Potter while stuck on a late train. Even Shakespeare must have invented, trying to invent a dramatic opening line before finally writing, To be or not to be.

I have had plenty of experience with the concept of inventing, especially in writing. Sometimes ideas come like a torrential downpour—overflowing, unstoppable. More often, though, they come like a dry spring, forcing me to sit in snob, staring at a cursor that blinks mockingly.

And speaking of inventing, sometimes there are wild ideas that are better left in my head. Like the time I once invented a plan to grow cacti even though I couldn’t even care for a plastic plant. Or the time I invented a scenario of what it would be like to quit my job and become a freelance writer traveling the world—even though my wallet wasn’t even ready to pay for the increasingly expensive parking fees.

But while brilliant (or absurd) ideas often remain as concepts, there is beauty in the process. We may not always be able to realize everything we conceptualize, but that's where the art lies: we continually imagine, design, and ultimately, create something real.
