Welcome to the World of "Safety First" That Isn't Always "Safety Fun"

I still remember clearly, when I was little, I was a very active child - too active in fact, to the point that my mother often said that I was like a monkey who had been injected with caffeine. Running here and there, climbing anything that could be climbed, and jumping from places that shouldn't be jumped from.

One "historic" day, I decided that a plastic chair was the perfect horse to ride. With full confidence, I stood on it, raised my arms like a professional cowboy, and shouted "Yihaaa!" Of course, the poor plastic chair was not designed to withstand amateur acrobatics like me. BANG! In an instant, I landed inelegantly, greeted by a lump the size of a chicken egg on my forehead.

Now, as an adult (and having experienced various similar "adventures"), I begin to understand why safety first is important. This is not just a boring slogan found in every corner of a factory or building. This is a life lesson that we often learn the hard way - sometimes too hard that it leaves a lump.

Speaking of safety first, Indonesians have a unique relationship with this concept. We are a creative nation in creating "shortcuts" for everything. Just look at how we can turn a motorbike into a multifunctional cargo vehicle that can carry a refrigerator, cupboard, even a goat! It's amazing... and terrifying at the same time.

"Ah, it's okay, the important thing is to get there!" is an unofficial motto that we often hear. But imagine if the pilot of the plane we're on had the same philosophy? "Ah, there's only a little gas left, the important thing is to get there!" I think we can all agree that in this case, "the important thing is to be safe" is much better than "the important thing is to get there".

Safety first is actually like an umbrella before it rains, but unfortunately we are more often the "get wet first then realize" team. We only put on our helmets properly after getting a ticket, only put on our seat belts after getting a warning, or only check the stairs after... well, you know the rest.

But make no mistake, even though it can be boring, safety first doesn't mean we have to live in bubble wrap. It's more like using common sense - which unfortunately isn't always common. As the saying goes: "It's better to be labeled too cautious than to be in the news."

So, let's start implementing safety first in our daily lives. Starting from simple things like not checking WhatsApp while crossing the road (modern zombies), or not using a hairdryer while taking a bath (unless you want to create a very, very bad science experiment).

Remember, the purpose of safety first is not to make our lives boring, but to ensure that we can still enjoy life to the fullest - without bumps on the head or "almost" stories that make our parents have heart attacks.

And if you still doubt the importance of safety first, try talking to people who work in the emergency unit. They have a collection of "if only..." stories that will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Trust me, it's better to be the one who is "too cautious" than to be the star of one of their stories.

Finally, safety first may not always be fun, but it's much more fun than "sorry after". And as my mom always reminded me after the plastic chair incident: "It's better to look stupid for five minutes because you're too careful than to regret a lifetime because you're too careless."

So, from now on, let's be safety heroes in our everyday lives. Because honestly, there's nothing cooler than being alive and well to tell the tale.
