Have you ever imagined a world without civilization? No countries, no financial system, no written laws, and of course, no bureaucracy to frustrate us in the morning. A world where we go back to being hunter-gatherers, living off the land, without the hassle of filing tax returns or dealing with ads that suddenly pop up in the middle of our favorite videos.
But before we get too romantic about this idea, let’s take a moment to reflect. Civilization, for all its messiness, has given us modern wonders: antibiotics, instant coffee, and the ability to argue with strangers on social media about things we don’t even know about.
As someone who grew up in the digital age, I often wonder, “What if civilization suddenly collapsed?” Imagine waking up one morning with no electricity, no internet, and worse yet, no food delivery. In that moment, I realize that my survival skills are limited to being able to unwrap a pack of instant noodles and choose the best playlist to accompany your sadness.
However, if we look at history, civilization has never been truly stable. The once-glorious Roman Empire collapsed, great dynasties in China fell, and even once-glorious kingdoms in the Indonesian Archipelago are now just historical records. The difference is, we now live in a global system that is so interconnected that if one part collapses, the impact can spread throughout the world in a matter of hours.
So, are we really witnessing the end of civilization? Maybe, but not in the way we imagine. Civilization doesn't just disappear like dust in the wind. It changes, evolves, and sometimes, like software that is too buggy, it just needs to be rebooted.
So, do we really want to go back to an era without civilization? Without Google Maps, without Instagrammable cafes, without sitting toilets? Maybe some of us can survive, but I myself still doubt I can live without modern conveniences—especially without morning coffee and stable WiFi. Maybe what we need isn’t “No More Civilization,” but “A Better Civilization”—a civilization that’s more humane, more thoughtful, and of course, more welcoming to those who don’t want to read the terms and conditions every time they install a new app.
Because in the end, if there’s one thing for sure, it’s that humans will always find a way to adapt, whether it’s by going back to the woods or simply finding new ways to complain about life on Twitter.🙃
