False advertising. False advertising. I remember when I was in my early 20s, I think it was, maybe 20? Katie and I went down to Oregon to visit Meggie, it was her freshman year at college, I can't remember the name of the college. It was a private university, not exactly in Portland, if I remember correctly, but near Portland. I know we went to Powell's, anyway, and I found my first Adbusters magazine. I was into it. I had grown up in a thrifty family...we clipped coupons, shopped at thrift stores, and generally (though not always) bought store brand. I had always been a little confused, more than anything, by my friend Michelle, who was big into name brands. They even had an Eddie Bauer edition SUV. Like, what? So when I saw Adbusters, I was like yes, we are all being manipulated by advertisements, we're all being lulled into not paying attention to the ills of the world! I have a hard time understanding how people can willfully look away from the ills of the world. Or maybe worse, see the ills of the world and misplace the blame. So I bought an Adbusters, and that led me to Crimethinc, somehow or another, and I was already well on the way to radicalization before I met Brendan.
