Speed control. Speed control. The child says Hey Mommy. Now he's getting upset. We're trying to do a freewrite and the child wants attention. That's hard to navigate. But okay, he has gone back to his computer. We told him dinner is at 6:30pm so we thought we still had 15 minutes and plenty of time to do a five minute freewrite, but the sound of the Alexa timer getting going reminded him that other life exists outside his computer. I wonder about AI. Is it "the future"? Or is it death and destruction? Is it so bad for the planet that we shouldn't even be using it? I feel like so many industries are excited about it and in the nonprofit sector, there are all these webinars about how you can use AI to aid in your fundraising and grantwriting. But then I hear about how much energy it uses, so much more energy than other things, and I hear about how unethical it is in how it uses other peoples' work, and it just seems like a net negative. And I've got some professors that aren't allowing phones or computers in class and are making us buy physical books or print out readings that we can access online, and I hear other students talking about how it is unethical to make students buy all these books...but is it? I had to buy lots of books for my undergrad too. And okay, yes, maybe it should all be included, I mean hell, education should be free for all, so yes, the books should be included too. But...but...but I get them wanting us to have physical books and papers and not use phones and computers in the classroom. But then...I also get the ease of reading on computers and kindles.
