I once heard a story about a talented idiot. Yes, I called him a talented idiot. Or how would you address such a person. When you hear the story, you will know why I called him a talented idiot. Maybe you would even give him a worst adjective than mind.
This story was told by one of my teachers. He is a teacher who likes encouraging and cautioning young people. We were privileged to be in his class so we usually enjoyed good motivational teachings and inspirational stories.
One day he told us a story. He said he was traveling with someone through one of the cities in Western Nigeria. Then he saw an elderly man sitting in rags outside an old building. So, the person he was traveling with said to him:
“Please, remind me. I want to tell you a story about that man that is sitting down in front of that house.”
As they were continuing on the journey, the man told him:
“Do you see that man?”
He said yes.
“That was the man who won 75,000 pounds in a lottery about 20 years ago.”
“What!” My teacher exclaimed.
“Why is he like this? 75,000 pounds then was more than 75 million pounds now! How come is this poor?” My teacher asked.
So, if I ask you now, what would you think could make someone who won 75,000 pounds 20 years ago to be poor and wretched now? He must be a perfect example of a talented idiot.
