Bronwen stomped her feet, pressing her frustration into the ground with the twisting of her ankles. The dust from the drying dirt plumed upwards, causing a nearby lizard to escape promptly to a nearby oasis of rocks and shrubbery. She felt the sting of tears baring down on her eyes as she fought them with all of her might. She looked around her, taking in the empty space, not long filled by her trusted companions.
She was alone.
Struggling through the cocktail of emotions, Bronwen made an effort to walk further into the slums, approaching the city walls now holding her allies captive.
“Wait an hour, they said. We’ll be right out, they said.”
The fading glow of the evening sun told her that her friends were long gone. She was the only one who could help them. And she would.
