For the last 6 weeks or so, @clareartista and I have been wanting to share a #FungiFriday post
but one way or another we never got around to actually doing it, even though we have gone foraging for mushrooms plenty of times, both in Italy and Portugal, since the two of us got together, at the start of September.
Clare and I even had an interesting nightly encounter with a wild pig in the Italian mountains, while sleeping in Clare's car on a rain infested night. We also ran into a wild cow that Clare got a bit too close too ( I've got pictures to prove that )
but hey, that's all food for another post by Clare or me, in the foreseeable future.
Today I just wanted to share a couple of photos of this evening's walk, where we ended up without mushrooms to bring home with us. Luckily we didn't have to go to bed hungry, as we found plenty of fresh chestnuts that are roasting in the oven right now, abundantly sprinkled with sunflower/olive oil and sea salt.
Here's a bunch of photos of mushrooms that we did not take home with us for various reasons.
They were either
too slimy...
or
too spongy...
Infested with maggots...
or likely inedible (albeit similar to the parasol mushroom)...
Some were simply too tiny...
or too cute...
too fashionable to pick...
or already chewed on by wild animals...
And this one screamed SO LOUDLY that we had to drop it immediately after this picture was taken...
All in all, it was a nice walk, on a chilly, humid Autumn day in Central Portugal.
We even found our future house!
Although, something seems to be off...
This is better
I was kidding about this house but Clare and I are on the lookout for a future plot of land, in nature, possibly with a cute little house on it ( if we don't build something ourselves).
Our actual rental house can be found by following the snake trail that can be seen on these pics for a minute or ten.
Enjoying the view
The chestnuts are ready and we are starting to get hangry. Clare made an amazing soup that is bubbling in the background, as well as some nice beetroot-and-carrot cole slaw and some yummilicious oatcakes that we ate with butter, cheese and pickles/chutney (homemade by Clare), so we can indeed go to bed feeling blessed and bloated
Chestnuts!
This creative/these creatives need to feed
themselves
Logging out...
Hmm, yummy. I didn’t know that chestnuts grow wild in Portugal also. Good news 👍
Enjoy your time together!
Why wouldn't they? :<)
Cheers.
Have a great day!👋
They are linked to Italy for my mind, maybe part of France.
And they didn’t grow in the Alentejo region where I lived. I didn’t take into consideration the more northern parts of Portugal where the conditions can meet their requirements.
I Love your list of the reasons you didnt Pick the mushrooms, Made me smile 😊😄 such a fun Idea to make a Post about Not Picking mushrooms ^^
Your Dinner Sounds and Looks amazing! I guess there is nothing more healthy to eat than foraged and homemade Things 😊 nourishing on all Levels.
It was basically a joke (although we actually did not take any of them home ). There's only 2 edible mushrooms (here) that I can identify easily, the rest is still a bit of a grey zone. @clareartista is way more knowledgable in this area but she was cooking while I wrote the post, so I decided not to disturb her by asking her for the names/more info.
The dinner was amazing indeed.
Sending a big hug 🤗
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
Ah I love chestnuts I’m probably going to get some in a few weeks as it’s the holidays coming up for them.
I’m sure Clare showed you or you saw the meme I found the other day of mushrooms haha. I have found some good ones in the wild but haven’t the slightest clue what they are so they get left rightfully alone.
Looks like a beautiful place guys!
I love them too and there's an abundance of them around here. ready to be picked. Although the wild pigs often tend to be quicker at it than us.
Clare did show me that mushroom meme! Hahaha!
Not too shabby ;<)
Sending a hug!
I love chestnuts!
There are a lot of mushrooms here but I'm not sure many of them are safe to eat. I'll look in the Botanical Garden tomorrow and see what's there.
Is there a recipe for the oatcakes?
Clare says: "Hiya dear @shanibeer ! It's mostly a porridge recipe, but make it thicker, and they can be without milk also. Just oats, fat (butter or oil), salt to taste, and baking powder or similar, if you're feeling fancy - then any other additional things you like in an oatcake: these had turmeric and cumin, yum! Bake them in a medium oven for around 20 mins or so."
Excellent ... I shall try them tomorrow!
Nice! Let us know how they turn out :<)
It occurs to me this would make a fabulous children's book.
Nicely put. I hadn't thought of that. Just tried to be funny whilst feeling pretty exhausted haha :<)
Sending a hug!
Chestnuts, awwwww!!!! absolutely unexpected and yummy coda of your post. It was an amazing and entertaining walk with cool finds. Thank you very much for sharing in community. 🙏 Sending some Hive !PIZZA your way.
You're welcome. I am/we are enjoying every single walk out here. Clare is always on the lookout for all kinds of edibles. I am learning a lot from her and am loving it.
Am about to walk to a river beach and I'm sure I'll spot some beauties of nature.
Cheers for the comment and have a great day!✨
"too fashionable to pick" ahahaha
the mushroom god grants you two his grace and will henceforth forever shower you in perfectly edible shroom abundance.
i am looking forward so much to eating real food like you two are. exemplary!
What a beautiful outing mushroom hunting and it's always so enjoyable when lovers do things together 😉
I also don’t like spongy mushrooms
They don’t always look fine…
Do you every forage for mushrooms yourself, where you live?
We got the same kind of mushrooms here! You gotta be careful which ones to eat tough
Cool. Where do you live?
@clareartista knows loads about mushrooms and has decades of experience. She grew up foraging, on a Scottish isle. We have a handful of mushrooms books and research before we eat. If we aren't sure we don't eat it but I/we also tend to think that store bought/supermarket food can be at least as poisonous, especially in the long term.
It is all about finding a balance between intuition and common sense.
I live in northern Italy, so autumn is mushroom heaven in the forests, even some in the city, last one caught yesterday
Supermarket food is not healthy for sure, with all addictions and stuff to make it last 6 months, a bread 6 months come on
