My first morels ever! Had to get out the macro lens for this 😍
What an exciting #mushroommonday!
We moved to Vermont last fall and got hooked on foraging for mushrooms. A more experienced forager has been saying its time to get out and look for morels. We found these on a trail at a state park. The morels were on the forest floor.
Fungi on the tree with the trail marker must be a good sign 😁
Also got in some herping. We moved to some rock scrabble under a rockface to look for snakes.
The rock scrabble was full of snakes. Snakes like the warming weather kind of like the morels the warming weather.
This was a large rat snake 4' to 5'. Rat snakes are rare in Vermont.
The snakes are just now moving out of dens. This little garter snake has the blue eyes characteristic of a snake about to shed.
What an awesome Monday hike!
congratulations on this happy find! morels are really hard to find, when they prefer hiding. thanx for sharing your awesome story, I nominate the post for #OCD curation. Hive on!
Hive on indeed 🙂 thanks. We sauteed up morels. Yummy end to the day 🍄
Nice trail you walked and the sign surrounded with the fungi is just a fun photo. And so promising to find more heheheYes, you found some morels @steven-patrick they look great.
You lifted it up, the snake, it is the only thing I would not like to see on hikes.
Thanks for checking out my post. My son likes looking for snakes. He is quite adventurous and experienced handling snakes. I just pick up the small ones that I am 100% sure on the ID and safe 🙂
Ok, that is ok than, if you know it is safe and could id them. Still… bbbrrrr not for me hahaha 🤣You are so welcome @steven-patrick 😊
I love morels, only in a pan with cream... hmmm
Cool find and nice pics with the rat snake
We sauteed them up with some butter and ate them up. Whenever we try first time foraged mushrooms, we usually make an omelete but there weren't really enough and we wanted a good taste of the morels.
Yep don't mix the morels... alone a delight 😀
very unique mushroom

Wow, you have had more morel luck than me this year. Seems like they are growing under some pines? I haven't noticed the snakes coming out over here yet, maybe they are the harbingers of morel season lol.
Luck is right. Lucky find. Lucky but exciting. And tasty.
How did you cook them?
We only had a few and since it was the first we had ever foraged, we really wanted the morel flavor. We just sauteed them with a little butter.
Their flavor is pretty mild, there was a recipe where you roast them in olive oil and spices with salt that seemed to bring out alot of their flavor. I'm not sure how it was done exactly as a 5 star chef made it.
We are hoping to find more. Now I just need to hire a Michelin starred chef 🤔
Like the tire company? j/k I'll have to email that chef and ask him about that mushroom recipe it was amazing. But I wonder if I'll even find any this year womp.
