Juan Soto 'eliminating teams' as Yankees, Mets battle for superstar free agent
The bid for Juan Soto’s services is finally coming to a head.
With everyone fiending for information surrounding Soto’s free agency, his agent, Scott Boras, finally quelled some speculation that his announcement is imminent.
“When you’re going through these things, he’s just got a lot of information to meld through,” Boras told reporters after a Dodgers news conference introducing his fellow client, Blake Snell, who agreed to a five-year, $182 million deal with the reigning World Series champs.

“We’ve had meetings with a number of franchises. He’s begun the process of eliminating teams and doing things and so he’s — Juan is a very methodical thinker. So we’ll see. But I don’t think anything is imminent in the near future.”
The Post’s Jon Heyman reported that Soto is expected to be seriously considering a return to the Yankees, as well as having meetings with the Mets, Red Sox and Blue Jays.

Bidding For Juan Soto Has Reached At Least $600MM
The floor for Juan Soto’s contract appears to be $600MM. Ken Rosenthal, Evan Drellich and Brendan Kuty of the Athletic report that every team that remains in the Soto bidding has made a formal offer at or above that number.
With multiple $600MM+ offers in hand, there’s not much chance of Soto pivoting to a short-term deal. Jon Heyman of the New York Post wrote last week that the four-time All-Star wasn’t interested in taking a shorter term to prioritize his annual earnings. Heyman suggested Soto was seeking a 15-year contract. It’s not clear whether that’ll be on the table, though tonight’s report from The Athletic indicates he’s likely to sign for at least 12 years. That’ll presumably come with one or more opt-out chances as well.

Agent Scott Boras did not comment publicly about contract terms. However, he told reporters this evening that Soto has begun to narrow the field. “We’ve had meetings with a number of franchises. He’s begun the process of eliminating teams and doing things. Juan is a very methodical thinker, so we’ll see, but I don’t think anything is imminent in the near future,” Boras said at today’s introductory presser for another of his clients, Blake Snell.
While Soto reportedly fielded interest from 11 teams at the beginning of the offseason, it seems a clear five suitors have emerged: the Yankees, Mets, Blue Jays, Red Sox and Dodgers. Most speculation throughout the industry is that he’ll land with one of the New York franchises. To that end, Rosenthal, Drellich and Kuty write that many people around the game expect that Mets’ owner Steve Cohen will refuse to be outbid.

KBO’s Hyeseong Kim Being Posted
Second baseman Hyeseong Kim, 25, will be posted by the KBO Kiwoom Heroes as of Dec. 5 at 8 a.m. ET. Any team agreeing to sign Kim will be subject to paying 20% of the first 25 million to the Kiwoom Heroes, then 17.5% of the next 25 million and 15% of any dollars thereafter. The deadline for Kim to sign with an MLB team is on Jan. 3 at 5 p.m. ET.
MLB Trade Rumors predicted in their annual Top 50 Free Agents post that Kim could secure a three-year deal worth $24 million.

Offensively, he offers a contact/speed profile with some extra-base hit power and some solid patience at the plate. His 2024 season was his best from a power standpoint, seeing him slash .326/.383/.458 with 11 home runs and 30 stolen bases. Kim will draw walks and use his speed on the bases, as he has stolen at least 20 bases in every season since 2018. Overall, Kim has hit .304/.364/.403 with 37 home runs and 211 stolen bases over his eight-year career in the KBO.
Defensively, Kim has played second base, third base, shortstop, and left field in his career. The 2024 season saw Kim exclusively play second base. Kim has won two straight fielding awards at second base.
In the 2022 Asian Games, he won a gold medal for South Korea, hitting .292/.500/.370.
In terms of his fit on the Mets, Kim could provide a low-cost, high-upside super utility player covering three positions on the infield. Kim hasn’t played the outfield since 2020 and, in his career, has logged 19 games at third base. The biggest concern seems to be whether his lack of power makes him unable to be an everyday player since his previous career high in home runs was seven. The Mets could do much worse than securing a 25-year-old with positional versatility and speed who has won multiple KBO Golden Gloves (these are for the overall best player at a position in KBO).

Report: Padres in ‘Strong Position’ to Sign Sasaki
Young Japanese ace Roki Sasaki will be posted during the international free agency period that begins on Jan. 15, and the 23-year-old will be highly sought after. Most reports leading into this offseason believed the Los Angeles Dodgers were the favorite, but a new report from Francys Romero (a reporter well-known for his coverage of IFA) says several folks he talked to in the industry believe the San Diego Padres are in a strong position to sign Sasaki.
This is a reminder that because Sasaki has been posted this offseason before he turns 25, he is subject to amateur free agent rules that cap his potential contract at each team’s bonus pool. The top bonus pools for the 2025 period is $7.5 million, with the Athletics, Brewers, Mariners, Marlins, Rays, Reds, Tigers, and Twins having that amount.
