Why can't people muster the strength to say "thank you" -or even just acknowledge someone's presence - when someone's holding open a door for them? It's basic courtesy; we're not doorstoppers.

Sort:

I always do

Must be where I live... I'm sure that courtesy is far more widespread in smaller cities

My city is the largest in the state, but it is one of the less populated states. I grew up in a very large city in a high population state though.

Do you find the same types of behaviors common in both cities?

Sure, it's not everyone and the reactions differ day to day. Most people acknowledge it positively and maybe a 1/3 are apathetic losers.

Sounds about right. For me, among strangers, it seems to be a higher proportion, especially the younger ones. Frankly, I'd just like to understand the reasoning behind not doing something so simple.

It's apathy derived from parents being too busy working to raise the kids. Apathy is growing with each generation.

There are also predictable generational cycles where certain generations are more likely to be disaffected than others.

Lol.. The thing is when you say thank you, you have absolutely nothing to lose & almost everything to gain.

I always say thank you for little things people do to me because I know the person also have a choice not to do it.

Exactly! It costs merely a breath to say "thank you," or if you don't feel like talking, a few small muscle movements to nod and smile. I'm simply led to believe that this is either entitlement of plain rudeness.

Lol... let us say more of entitlement...

Unfortunately I believe this to be the case as well

I usually just say a quick "thanks". That should suffice.

And that's perfect!

Courtesy is no longer basic, or common. It has become the exception, not the rule.

Partly to blame is phones. People are oblivious to their surroundings. The overall declining cultural behavior(s) will continue.

Funny you should mention phones... the person who did this was on their phone as they walked by me through the door I was holding open, haha. You're on to something here.

People walk into poles and other obstacles, trip and fall on sidewalks/stairs, and almost get hit by cars - because the phone had their undivided attention.

They need a VR app to "slap some sense" into them at times! LOL

Once in a while, when I'm riding along with someone and see a person walking across the road on their phones, I ask the driver to honk the horn to scare the person crossing. It's not done but the idea gives us a laugh lol.

I see riders on motorbikes in #thailand so engrossed in their phone that they run traffic lights and such. Often after accidents, when asked what happened. the repy is "I don't know, I was on the phone".

I think you can functionally shorten the phrase "I don't know, I was on the phone" to "I was on the phone" because that's what happened! It's horrible.

Basic manners.
Most people here are good for it but there are always some.
