So Vaultec and I got back from the RareEvo conference over the weekend.
Lots of good things happening.
For myself aligning with other games and game companies is a big win.
Here is an X post that showed up on my feed yesterday that shows the over arching view point of the companies that are growing.
I have bought hive/leo with fiat several times to increase my influence and vp. These are probably the my biggest motivations for doing so. Increased earnings also help
Fees are pretty reasonable as far as I'm concerned. I don't believe any KYC is required. They might want it for larger transactions, but not for anything I would have done.
Hive/Leo/HBD no. BTC yes. I have thought about using some fiat to purchase Hive/Leo/HBD because I have a decent amount of faith in the platform and I'd love to have a powerful vote to help people out on it.
Nice! I would love to have a first edition Dune on my shelf, but not enough to buy it for that price... probably. If I didn't have to worry about the repercussions from my wife, I'd probably do that. #favoritebooks
The weather has been cold and rainy. Its August, the month of rain. Welcome to threads. I hope you will love the discussions and friends on the platform. Keep on exploring and engaging with everyone.
Its you choose to rethread some music, here are some artist tag. Double click on any artists of your choice, copy link of any of their songs and post it under the entertainment threadcast.
Just click the video camera icon under the thread box (between image and poll icons) and away you go. Although they may not be going through properly at the moment.
Buenos días a toda la comunidad de Inleo, que sea un día muy agradable y productivo para todos, donde hoy es martes y los días de la semana pasan rápido, no te quedes atrás.
I am so happy that you joined us. Welcome to threads, its a cool place to make friends and share important updates about your activities. Am sure you will love it here.
Foco no HP agora!
It's been a rough patch but I will try my best to be more active, The #dailydook has been falling off most tags not doing great besides #freecompliments
I will try to find more time for the effort
Here is the daily technology #threadcast for 8/20/24. We aim to educate people about this crucial area along with providing information of what is taking place.
Drop all question, comments, and articles relating to #technology and the future. The goal is make it a technology center.
My lifestyle of a busy schedule can't keep up with long form blogging, so can I still get all premium benefits sticking to threading and engagement like I would on twitter? #freecompliments #cent
SpaceX, the company owned by South African billionaire Elon Musk, is preparing its next mission, which will take astronauts to walk in space. The trip has just been officially scheduled, and should take place on August 26th.
It is SpaceX's first attempt to send astronauts to walk in space - and the first endeavor of its kind in the private space exploration sector. The mission, called Polaris Dawn, represents the first of three flights purchased by fellow billionaire Jared Isaacman. As Isaacman stated to CNBC, the flight should launch in the early hours of the 26th, in Florida.
Not as much as I would like. But I'm very interested in space exploration.
Regarding space technology, it's incredible what SpaceX is doing and giving us the possibility of saving a lot of money with the propellants that return to Earth.
I remember the day this test went well, I celebrated as if it were a goal. LOL
I was happy because I knew that from that moment on, we would make significant progress with space exploration.
Over and over again, year after year, skeptics have claimed “deep learning won’t be able to do X” and have been quickly proven wrong. If there’s one lesson we’ve learned from the past decade of AI, it’s that you should never bet against deep learning.
Anthropic, the Amazon-backed AI startup, on Monday was hit with a class-action lawsuit in California federal court over alleged copyright infringement.
Anthropic, the Amazon-backed artificial intelligence startup, on Monday was hit with a class-action lawsuit in California federal court over alleged copyright infringement. Three authors said in the filing that Anthropic "built a multibillion-dollar business by stealing hundreds of thousands of copyrighted books," including their own.
Anthropic, which was founded by ex-OpenAI research executives, has backers including Google and Salesforce.
Authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson alleged in the lawsuit that "an essential component of Anthropic's business model — and its flagship 'Claude' family of large language models (or 'LLMs')— is the largescale theft of copyrighted works," later alleging that "Anthropic downloaded known pirated versions of Plaintiffs' works, made copies of them, and fed these pirated copies into its models."
The lawsuit follows Anthropic's June debut of its most powerful AI model yet, Claude 3.5 Sonnet. Claude is one of the chatbots that, like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, has exploded in popularity in the past year.

The European Union on Tuesday said planned tariffs on Tesla vehicles being imported from China would be cut to 9% from 20.8%, while also reducing a number of planned import duties on other Chinese electric vehicle firms.
In June, the EU said it would slap higher tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports, which it found benefit "heavily from unfair subsidies" and pose a "threat of economic injury" to EV producers in Europe.
The European Commission, the executive arm of the EU, announced a preliminary conclusion that the battery-electric vehicles value chain in China "benefits from unfair subsidisation" and pronounced that it is in the EU's interest to impose "provisional countervailing duties" on BEV imports from China.
Gemini Live, Google's answer to OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode, is now available. But it needs some serious work.
What’s the point of chatting with a human-like bot if it’s an unreliable narrator — and has a colorless personality?
That’s the question I’ve been turning over in my head since I began testing Gemini Live, Google’s take on OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode, last week. Gemini Live is an attempt at a more engaging chatbot experience — one with realistic voices and the freedom to interrupt the bot at any point.
Gemini Live is “custom-tuned to be intuitive and have a back-and-forth, actual conversation,” Sissie Hsiao, GM for Gemini experiences at Google, told TechCrunch in May. “[It] can provide information more succinctly and answer more conversationally than, for example, if you’re interacting in just text. We think that an AI assistant should be able to solve complex problems … and also feel very natural and fluid when you engage with it.”
After spending a fair amount of time with Gemini Live, I can confirm that it is more free-flowing and natural-feeling than Google’s previous attempts at AI-powered voice interactions (see: Google Assistant). But it doesn’t address the problems of the underlying tech, like hallucinations and inconsistencies — and it introduces a few new ones.

Pakistani startup PostEx is entering Saudi Arabia as first global market after hitting $21 million ARR in the South Asian nation.
Pakistani startup PostEx, offering financial and logistics services to online merchants, is set to enter new markets, beginning with Saudi Arabia this year, TechCrunch has exclusively learned.
“We want to go into other markets to really disrupt them because we see the gap,” said Muhammad Omer Khan, founder and CEO of PostEx, in an interview.
E-commerce in Pakistan, which currently sits at around 1.5% of its total retail market, has grown 50% in the last 12 months. PostEx is a likely contributor to that growth.
Online merchants in Pakistan find it challenging to sustain their business and achieve growth, as 95% of transactions are paid with cash on delivery. Courier companies in the South Asian nation take 10 to 15 days to settle those transactions from the dispatch time to delivery. All this leads to working capital issues for online merchants.
In 2020, Khan founded PostEx to solve these issues by giving merchants upfront payments against cash-on-delivery orders, and an attached logistics service. After getting regulated as a non-bank financial institution in Pakistan, the startup also launched a growth capital offering for online merchants. However, to reduce risks, the startup does not provide pure financial support to merchants, and only gives them credit if they use its logistics service.

On Sunday, former President Donald Trump posted a collection of memes on Truth Social — the platform owned by his media company — that make it seem like Taylor Swift and her fans are coming out in support of his candidacy. But as new legislation takes effect, these images could have deeper implications about the use of AI-generated images in political campaigns, especially when those images misrepresent a celebrity’s likeness.
“One of the things I’m seeing a lot of in my practice right now is the rise of AI impersonators across the board for endorsements,” Noah Downs, an IP and entertainment lawyer, told TechCrunch, with the condition that his comments are not legal advice. These fake AI endorsements have become so widespread that even “Shark Tank” had to publish a PSA to warn fans about the prevalence of scams that impersonate the show’s investors.
In one of the images Trump posted, hordes of young women wear matching “Swifties for Trump” t-shirts. While there is indeed political diversity among the large population of Swift fans, these images appear to be AI-generated — in fact, these particular images come from a satirical post on X.
Former a16z-investor Balaji Srinivasan has booked out an island in Singapore to create his own “Network School.”
Depending on your thoughts on the intersection of crypto and Silicon Valley’s libertarians, this is either a dream idea or an odd one: Former a16z investor Balaji Srinivasan has booked out an island in Singapore to create his own “Network School.” This is where he’ll run programs on crypto, longevity and what it takes to establish “a technocapitalist college town,” as he put it in his post announcing the initiative.
It’s the most meaningful milestone yet for Srinivasan’s dream of creating “network states,” which he defines as an internet community that secures a physical location and “gains diplomatic recognition from pre-existing states,” he wrote.
The concept has enraptured the libertarian subsection of Silicon Valley; Srinivasan earned praise from Marc Andreessen and Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin and has inspired fellow crypto enthusiasts to start their own “network states.” In addition to his years at a16z, which ended in 2018, Srinivasan is also known for his year as Coinbase’s CTO after Coinbase bought his crypto startup Earn.com in 2018. And he’s a board member of the crypto nonprofit advocacy and lobbying organization Coin Center, which champions for policies like anonymity for crypto holders from the IRS.
Starpath Robotics wants to make the moon a refueling station for rockets, lunar landers and other spacecraft.
NASA and the space industry are in agreement: if we want to establish a permanent human presence on the moon, we’ll need to make use of every native resource we can — and none are as important as water ice.
Starpath Robotics is one of a handful of startups planning for this future. The startup is betting that there will be a thriving market for liquid oxygen (LOX) refined from lunar water ice, and that harvesting this resource will be key to humanity’s expansion throughout the solar system. LOX is a crucial component of propellant for some vehicles like rockets and spacecraft like lunar landers, and its used as the oxidizer alongside a combustible fuel such as hydrogen, kerosene, or methane.
The company came out of stealth last September with an ambitious water harvesting architecture, involving mining rovers, refineries and LOX storage systems. Starpath wants to launch a demo mission “as quickly as we possibly can,” CEO Saurav Shroff said in a recent interview. To ensure the hardware will be ready whenever a launch vehicle is available, the company announced today that it has closed a $12 million seed round, co-led by 8VC and Fusion Fund, with participation from Day One Ventures, Balerion Space, and Indicator Ventures. The new funding brings the total capital raised to date to over $14.5 million.
AI models have proven capable of many things, but what tasks do we actually want them doing? Preferably drudgery — and there's plenty of that in research
AI models have proven capable of many things, but what tasks do we actually want them doing? Preferably drudgery — and there’s plenty of that in research and academia. Reliant hopes to specialize in the kind of time-consuming data extraction work that’s currently a specialty of tired grad students and interns.
“The best thing you can do with AI is improve the human experience: reduce menial labor and let people do the things that are important to them,” said CEO Karl Moritz. In the research world, where he and co-founders Marc Bellemare and Richard Schlegel have worked for years, literature review is one of the most common examples of this “menial labor.”
Every paper cites previous and related work, but finding these sources in the sea of science is not easy. And some, like systematic reviews, cite or use data from thousands.
For one study, Moritz recalled, “The authors had to look at 3,500 scientific publications, and a lot of them ended up not being relevant. It’s a ton of time spent extracting a tiny amount of useful information — this felt like something that really ought to be automated by AI.”
They knew that modern language models could do it: one experiment put ChatGPT on the task and found that it was able to extract data with an 11% error rate. Like many things LLMs can do, it’s impressive but nothing like what people actually need.
The demand for AI is fueling a data center boom, which in turn is driving up the consumption of water to cool equipment in those data centers.
The AI boom is fueling the demand for data centers and, in turn, driving up water consumption. (Water is used to cool the computing equipment inside data centers.) According to FT, in Virginia — home to the world’s largest concentration of data centers — water usage jumped by almost two-thirds between 2019 and 2023, from 1.13 billion gallons to 1.85 billion gallons.
Many say the trend, playing out worldwide, is unsustainable. Microsoft, a major data center operator, says 42% of the water it consumed in 2023 came from “areas with water stress.” Google, which has among the largest data center footprints, said this year that 15% of its freshwater withdrawals came from areas with “high water scarcity.”
Why can’t data centers recycle water in a closed-loop system? Many do, but much of what they consume is set aside for humidity control, meaning it evaporates. Especially in drier regions, air that’s not humidified can become a strong conductor of static electricity, which is usually bad news for computers.
The great nightly Waymo honk-a-thon — in which the company’s robotaxis erupted into a chorus of honking at night’s end in a San Francisco parking lot— was resolved, then not. Now it is again.
The backstory: Software engineer Sophia Tung set up a livestream of the parking lot that captured the robotaxis streaming in to park — and honk — for up to an hour around 4 a.m.
Waymo last week issued a software patch to ensure the robotaxis — often in close quarters — would not honk at each other. But at 4 a.m. Saturday morning, the livestream captured, yes, more honking.
Now, another patch has been issued, per an interview Monday between Tung and Waymo Director of Product and Operations Vishay Nihalani on her livestream. Nihalani explained that while it makes a lot of sense for Waymos to honk on public roads, the group honking was an unintended consequence.
Human prenatal #genome editing isn’t happening yet, but it's on the horizon. Imagine fixing genetic issues before birth to prevent diseases. Sounds incredible, right? But it’s not that simple. The #technology raises big ethical questions about how far we should go in altering #DNA. Read about the potential societal impacts and the tough choices we might face in the near future.
A recent study shows just how early #kids are diving into #socialmedia. By age 7, 31% of kids are already on X, and 28% are using Reddit. By 10, almost half (42%) own #smartphones, spending over 2 hours a day on TikTok. As they grow older, social media use skyrockets. 38% of 13-15-year-olds use Snapchat to chat, while teens 16-18 split their time between TikTok and Instagram.
The Biden administration has lifted most bans on defense technology sharing with Australia and the United Kingdom in order to fast-track the development of emerging weapons technologies among the allies.
“These critical reforms will revolutionize defense trade, innovation and cooperation, enabling collaboration at the speed and scale required to meet our challenging strategic circumstances,” Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said Thursday.
The agreement is designed to establish “an export license-free environment,” as Australian officials put it, in conjunction with the implementation of the AUKUS deal between the three allies. Although the Australian navy’s acquisition of U.S. and British nuclear submarine technology has dominated the international spotlight, “Pillar Two” of the AUKUS deal also aims to harness the advanced technology sectors of each country in a bid to win an emerging technology race with China.
“As tensions increase, and conflicts continue around the globe, our partnerships with our allies are critically important,” British Defense Secretary John Healey said Thursday. “This is a breakthrough that will allow our three nations to deepen our collaboration on defence technology and trade. Our new government will reinforce the UK’s role in AUKUS to boost Britain’s military capabilities and economic growth.”
President Joe Biden’s team regards emerging technologies such as quantum computing and artificial intelligence as “the strategic high ground,” as Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell put it recently. The pressure to outpace China, which is pouring money into a military modernization project powered in part by stolen from Western companies, spurred officials in Washington, London, and Canberra to put a premium on Pillar Two of the deal.
“We need to build an innovation system … across our three countries which stimulates the defense industry base across our three countries,” Marles said at a Center for Strategic and International Studies event last week. “Each of us have our own innovation systems which are focused on our own domestic defense industry bases. How we get value add here is by really kind of getting those much more harmonized.”
Director Tyler Perry said his $800 million studio expansion is now “indefinitely on hold” after he saw what OpenAI’s Sora program can do.
Last week, OpenAI announced its latest artificial intelligence program could turn text into video clips that are up to one minute long. According to the company, the advancement means that its AI can “understand and simulate the physical world in motion.” Perry sees this as an opportunity for the film industry but is also worried about job losses, according to an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.
“There’s got to be some sort of regulations in order to protect us. If not, I just don’t see how we survive,” Perry said, speaking also as an actor. “I think it’s going to be a major game-changer because if you could spend a fraction of the cost to do a pilot that would’ve cost $15 [million], $20 million, or even $35 million if you’re looking at HBO, of course the bottom line of those companies would be to go the route of lesser costs. So I am very, very concerned that in the near future, a lot of jobs are going to be lost. I really, really feel that very strongly.”
However, Perry did report he did not feel “any pressure to use” AI. But the unfinished studio expansion had already taken four years until he paused its construction. Meanwhile, AI saved Perry from sitting “through hours of aging makeup” and subsequently removed the need to hire a makeup artist. Perry was in the middle of building an additional 12 soundstages to a 330-acre property he owns for future film projects. Now, the director has already used AI in two of his films that have yet to be released.
“I no longer would have to travel to locations. If I wanted to be in the snow in Colorado, it’s text. If I wanted to write a scene on the moon, it’s text, and this AI can generate it like nothing,” Perry said. “If I wanted to have two people in the living room in the mountains, I don’t have to build a set in the mountains, I don’t have to put a set on my lot. I can sit in an office and do this with a computer, which is shocking to me.”
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists recently wrote up a new contract with the major studios that included protections against AI. Now, contracts require consent from performers before their likeness is infused with AI and compensation should they opt into it.
Similarly, the House has announced a bipartisan task force to regulate AI. According to Perry, Congress should “galvanize” to protect those in Hollywood who will be negatively affected by the technology.
Before long, the world will wake up. But right now, there are perhaps a few hundred people, most of them in San Francisco and the AI labs, that have situational awareness. Through whatever peculiar forces of fate, I have found myself amongst them. A few years ago, these people were derided as crazy—but they trusted the trendlines, which allowed them to correctly predict the AI advances of the past few years. Whether these people are also right about the next few years remains to be seen. But these are very smart people—the smartest people I have ever met—and they are the ones building this technology. Perhaps they will be an odd footnote in history, or perhaps they will go down in history like Szilard and Oppenheimer and Teller. If they are seeing the future even close to correctly, we are in for a wild ride.
AGI by 2027 is strikingly plausible. GPT-2 to GPT-4 took us from ~preschooler to ~smart high-schooler abilities in 4 years. Tracing trendlines in compute (~0.5 orders of magnitude or OOMs/year), algorithmic efficiencies (~0.5 OOMs/year), and “unhobbling” gains (from chatbot to agent), we should expect another preschooler-to-high-schooler-sized qualitative jump by 2027.
After showing it off in a preview late last month, Runway ML has officially released Gen-3 Alpha Turbo, the latest version of the AI video generation model that it claims is seven times faster and half the cost of its predecessor, Gen-3 Alpha.
The goal? Make AI video production more accessible to a wider audience across all subscription plans, including free trials.
The New York City-based company announced the news on its X account, writing: “Gen-3 Alpha Turbo Image to Video is now available and can generate 7x faster for half the price of the original Gen-3 Alpha. All while still matching performance across many use cases. Turbo is available for all plans, including trial for free users. More improvements to the model, control mechanisms and possibilities for real-time interactivity to come.”
Hugging Face, the open-source AI powerhouse, has taken a significant step towards democratizing low-cost robotics with the release of a detailed tutorial that guides developers through the process of building and training their own AI-powered robots.
The tutorial, published today, builds upon the company’s LeRobot platform launched in May and marks a significant move to bring artificial intelligence into the physical world.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment in the field of robotics, traditionally dominated by large corporations and research institutions with substantial resources.
By providing a comprehensive guide that covers everything from sourcing parts to deploying AI models, Hugging Face is empowering developers of all skill levels to experiment with cutting-edge robotics technology.
There are a few potential ways to make money from AI, but I should note that none are necessarily "easy" and all require skills, effort and often capital:
Developing AI applications or services: If you have technical skills, you could create AI-powered software or tools to sell.
AI consulting: Advising businesses on how to implement AI solutions.
Creating AI-related content: Writing articles, making videos, or teaching courses about AI.
Investing in AI companies: Though this requires capital and carries financial risks.
Using AI tools to enhance an existing business: For example, using AI for better customer service or product recommendations.
AI-assisted creative work: Using AI tools to help produce art, music, or writing that you can sell.
Participating in AI research studies or data labeling projects.
It's important to note that the AI field is competitive and rapidly evolving. Success typically requires expertise, innovation, and hard work rather than quick or easy solutions. Additionally, ethical considerations should always be kept in mind when working with AI technologies.
Can you design me a plan to go from 0 net worth to $10 million? how can I become a millionaire
Achieving a net worth of $10 million is an ambitious goal that typically requires a combination of strategic planning, hard work, and often some element of luck or timing. Here's a general framework that could potentially lead to significant wealth accumulation:
Develop valuable skills:
Identify high-demand, high-paying skills (e.g., programming, data science, business strategy)
Continuously educate yourself and stay updated in your field
Increase your income:
Aim for high-paying jobs or consulting roles in your area of expertise
Negotiate salaries and seek regular promotions
Consider multiple income streams (e.g., side hustles, freelancing)
Seek professional advice (financial advisors, tax professionals)
Implement tax-efficient strategies
Protect assets through insurance and legal structures
Be patient and persistent:
Wealth accumulation often takes time
Stay focused on long-term goals
Learn from setbacks and adjust strategies as needed
Remember, there's no guaranteed path to becoming a millionaire, and it often involves significant risk and hard work. This plan provides a general framework, but success depends on many factors, including market conditions, personal circumstances, and sometimes unpredictable opportunities.
Is there way wealth generation program, coupled with AI, that you can design for me?
While I can't provide a guaranteed path to wealth, I can outline a strategy that leverages AI to potentially enhance wealth generation. Keep in mind that all investments and business ventures carry risks, and success is never guaranteed. Here's a conceptual program that combines various wealth-building strategies with AI applications:
AI-Enhanced Skill Development:
Use AI-powered learning platforms (e.g., Coursera, edX) to acquire high-value skills in tech, finance, or business.
Leverage AI writing assistants to improve communication skills.
AI-Driven Career Optimization:
Use AI-powered job matching platforms to find high-paying positions.
Employ AI resume optimizers and interview preparation tools.
Use AI tools to create and manage online courses or content.
Leverage AI for efficient freelancing or consulting work management.
AI Security and Risk Management:
Implement AI-driven cybersecurity measures to protect your growing wealth.
Use AI predictive analysis for risk assessment in investments and business decisions.
This program aims to use AI as a tool to enhance traditional wealth-building strategies. It's important to note that while AI can provide valuable insights and efficiencies, human judgment, hard work, and ethical considerations remain crucial.
It is strikingly plausible that by 2027, models will be able to do the work of an AI researcher/engineer. That doesn’t require believing in sci-fi; it just requires believing in straight lines on a graph.
We are racing through the OOMs extremely rapidly, and the numbers indicate we should expect another ~100,000x effective compute scaleup—resulting in another GPT-2-to-GPT-4-sized qualitative jump—over four years. Moreover, and critically, that doesn’t just mean a better chatbot; picking the many obvious low-hanging fruit on “unhobbling” gains should take us from chatbots to agents, from a tool to something that looks more like drop-in remote worker replacements.
On everything from AP exams to the SAT, GPT-4 scores better than the vast majority of high schoolers.
The raw intelligence is (mostly) there, even if the models are still artificially constrained; it’ll take extra work to unlock models being able to fully apply that raw intelligence across applications.
Human evaluation has been the gold standard for assessing the quality and accuracy of large language models (LLMs), especially for open-ended tasks such as creative writing and coding. However, human evaluation is slow, expensive, and often requires specialized expertise.
Researchers at Meta FAIR have introduced a novel approach called the Self-Taught Evaluator, which leverages synthetic data to train LLM evaluators without the need for human annotations. The method comes with a few caveats, but it could significantly improve the efficiency and scalability of LLM evaluation for enterprises that want to build custom models.
LLMs are often used as evaluators themselves, playing a crucial role in aligning other models with human preferences or improving their own performance during training. This is especially important for tasks where multiple valid answers are possible, as is often the case with creative or complex instructions.
However, training accurate LLM evaluators typically relies on extensive human-annotated data, which is costly and time-consuming to acquire. This bottleneck becomes self-defeating, hindering the rapid development and deployment of new LLM-based applications.
The Self-Taught Evaluator addresses this challenge by using a training approach that eliminates the need for human-labeled data. It is built on top of the LLM-as-a-Judge concept, where the model is provided with an input, two possible answers, and an evaluation prompt. The LLM-as-a-Judge model aims to determine which response is better by generating a reasoning chain that reaches the correct result.
Self-Taught Evaluator starts with a seed LLM and a large collection of unlabeled human-written instructions, such as those commonly found in production systems.
We can decompose the progress in the four years from GPT-2 to GPT-4 into three categories of scaleups:
Compute: We’re using much bigger computers to train these models.
Algorithmic efficiencies: There’s a continuous trend of algorithmic progress. Many of these act as “compute multipliers,” and we can put them on a unified scale of growing effective compute.
”Unhobbling” gains: By default, models learn a lot of amazing raw capabilities, but they are hobbled in all sorts of dumb ways, limiting their practical value. With simple algorithmic improvements like reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), chain-of-thought (CoT), tools, and scaffolding, we can unlock significant latent capabilities.
Chinese-linked fast-fashion leader Shein is suing Temu, alleging its rival stole its designs and trade secrets.
Chinese-linked fast-fashion giant Shein is suing rival Temu, alleging the retailer stole its designs and built an empire using counterfeiting, intellectual property infringement and fraud.
The suit, filed Monday in Washington, D.C., federal court, comes as Shein itself fends off similar allegations from a wide variety of brands and independent artists, including Levi Strauss and H&M.
That is true. We have to keep improving our skills or we are going to be part of the mob wondering what is going on. That is why I keep adding to the #technology threadcast. Keep it expanding.
In its complaint, Shein alleges that Temu, owned by PDD Holdings, is "masquerading" as a legitimate online marketplace because it encourages its sellers to steal other brands' designs and then prevents them from removing products from the platform, even after they have admitted to infringement.
"Temu draws U.S. consumers into downloading and using its mobile application with promises of extremely low pricing. But Temu is not profiting from the sale of these products, which are priced so low that Temu must subsidize each sale, losing money on every transaction," the complaint said.
Model-based evaluation is at the heart of successful model development -- as a reward model for training, and as a replacement for human evaluation. To train such evaluators, the standard approach is to collect a large amount of human preference judgments over model responses, which is costly and the data becomes stale as models improve. In this work, we present an approach that aims to im-prove evaluators without human annotations, using synthetic training data only. Starting from unlabeled instructions, our iterative self-improvement scheme generates contrasting model outputs and trains an LLM-as-a-Judge to produce reasoning traces and final judgments, repeating this training at each new iteration using the improved predictions.
Without any labeled preference data, our Self-Taught Evaluator can improve a strong LLM (Llama3-70B-Instruct) from 75.4 to 88.3 (88.7 with majority vote) on RewardBench. This outperforms commonly used LLM judges such as GPT-4 and matches the performance of the top-performing reward models trained with labeled examples.
Here are some potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in our lives going forward, mainly in the future:
Improved efficiency and productivity: AI can help reduce time wasted on repetitive and routine tasks, allowing people to focus on more creative and valued activities.
Health and well-being: AI can contribute to early disease diagnosis, severe episode prediction, and personalized medical treatment. Additionally, it can assist in developing technologies that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
Mobility and transportation: AI can help optimize traffic flow, reducing congestion and increasing transport system efficiency. Moreover, it can contribute to the development of safer and more efficient autonomous vehicles.
Education: AI can help personalize learning, adapting to individual students' needs and identifying talents and aptitudes.
It is essential to note that artificial intelligence also presents challenges and risks, but addressing them appropriately is crucial for realizing its full potential benefits.
A rocket engine exploded during a test launch carried out in the Shetland archipelago, in the United Kingdom.
The launch was the responsibility of Rocket Factory Augsburg (RFA), a German company that has already commented on the situation and reported that no one was injured as a result of this explosion.
As for those responsible for the spaceport where this explosion occurred, SaxaVord Spaceport, pointed out that all safety protocols were complied with.
“This was a test and test campaigns are designed to identify problems before the next step”, can be read in the official statement shared by the BBC. “We will work with the RFA to understand and learn from the causes and support them as they move to the next phase of their preparation.”
The future of space travel is marked by increased privatization, with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin leading the way in developing reusable rockets and spacecraft. This lower cost of access to space will open up opportunities for tourism, scientific research, and even commercial activities . In the near term, private companies are already offering suborbital flights for tourists, while longer-term plans include establishing permanent human settlements on the Moon and Mars .
As technology advances, we can expect to see more ambitious missions and new players entering the field. For instance, space tourism is expected to become a multi-billion dollar industry by 2030, with companies like Virgin Galactic and Blue Origin planning to launch commercial flights . Additionally, NASA and other space agencies are pushing the boundaries of deep space exploration, with plans for crewed missions to Mars in the coming decades .
However, there are still significant challenges to overcome, such as developing more efficient propulsion systems, addressing radiation concerns, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of space travel. Despite these obstacles, the future of space travel holds immense promise for expanding human knowledge, enabling new forms of commerce, and ultimately transforming our relationship with the cosmos .
Gemini 1.5 Flash, recently released, offers between “GPT-3.75-level” and GPT-4-level performance, while costing 85x/57x (input/output) less than the original GPT-4 (extraordinary gains!).
Do we have an upcoming data problem for future AI training?
Yes, there are concerns about the availability of high-quality data for future AI training. Here are some reasons why:
Data scarcity: As AI systems become more complex and nuanced, they require larger and more diverse datasets to learn from. However, collecting and labeling such datasets can be time-consuming and expensive.
Data quality: The quality of training data is crucial for AI model performance. However, noisy, biased, or incomplete data can lead to poor performance, unfair decision-making, or even catastrophic failures.
Data imbalance: Many real-world datasets are imbalanced, meaning that one class or label has a significantly larger number of instances than others. This can lead to biased models that perform poorly on minority classes.
Data privacy and security: As AI systems handle sensitive data, there are concerns about data privacy and security. This can limit the availability of data for training and research.
Data fragmentation: Data is often scattered across different sources, formats, and locations, making it challenging to integrate and utilize effectively.
Data obsolescence: As AI systems evolve, the data they were trained on may become outdated or irrelevant, requiring continuous updates and retraining.
Lack of standardization: There is a lack of standardization in data formats, annotation schemes, and evaluation metrics, which can hinder collaboration and reproducibility in AI research.
To mitigate the upcoming data problem, it's essential to:
Invest in data infrastructure: Develop robust data management and curation systems to ensure data quality and accessibility.
Foster data sharing and collaboration: Encourage data sharing and collaboration among researchers, organizations, and industries.
Develop new data collection and annotation methods: Explore innovative methods for collecting and annotating data, such as active learning and transfer learning.
Improve data standardization and interoperability: Develop standardization and interoperability frameworks to facilitate data sharing and collaboration.
Invest in AI research and development: Continuously invest in AI research and development to improve data-driven AI systems and address emerging challenges.
By addressing these challenges and investing in data infrastructure, collaboration, and innovation, we can ensure a sustainable future for AI training and development.
Our partners at NVIDIA explain how they used structured weight pruning and model distillation to create Llama-Minitron 3.1 4B
Large language models like Llama can move with impressive speed and precision to handle a variety of challenging tasks, such as generating code, solving math problems, and helping doctors make life-saving medical decisions. Open source models are already leading to incredible breakthroughs across disciplines—however, they’re resource-intensive to deploy. It’s important that we work collaboratively across the industry to make it even easier for people to tap into the game-changing potential of LLMs.
Last month, we announced Llama 3.1, which includes our largest model yet, the 405B, as well as two smaller models with 70 billion and 8 billion parameters, respectively. Smaller models from a larger relative are typically cheaper to deploy to the masses and perform well across many language tasks. In a new research paper, our partners at NVIDIA explore how various large models can be made smaller using structured weight pruning and knowledge distillation—without having to train a new model from scratch. Working with Llama 3.1 8B, the team shares how it created Llama-Minitron 3.1 4B, its first work within the Llama 3.1 open source family.
Large language models (LLMs) targeting different deployment scales and sizes are currently produced by training each variant from scratch; this is extremely compute-intensive. In this paper, we investigate if pruning an existing LLM and then re-training it with a fraction (<3%) of the original training data can be a suitable alternative to repeated, full retraining. To this end, we develop a set of practical and effective compression best practices for LLMs that combine depth, width, attention and MLP pruning with knowledge distillation-based retraining; we arrive at these best practices through a detailed empirical exploration of pruning strategies for each axis, methods to combine axes, distillation strategies, and search techniques for arriving at optimal compressed architectures.
We use this guide to compress the Nemotron-4 family of LLMs by a factor of 2-4x, and compare their performance to similarly-sized models on a variety of language modeling tasks. Deriving 8B and 4B models from an already pretrained 15B model using our approach requires up to 40x fewer training tokens per model compared to training from scratch; this results in compute cost savings of 1.8x for training the full model family (15B, 8B, and 4B). Minitron models exhibit up to a 16% improvement in MMLU scores compared to training from scratch, perform comparably to other community models such as Mistral 7B, Gemma 7B and Llama-3 8B, and outperform state-of-the-art compression techniques from the literature. We have open-sourced Minitron model weights on Huggingface, with corresponding supplementary material including example code available on GitHub.
Burning some incense... always something that I enjoyed... unsure why, but the nostalgic effect of its different flavours and relaxing capacities, similar to how grilling with different types of wood, gives you the right flavours to the meat.
Sorry for changing the subject so quickly... 😆

I like it too, especially the grassy old style ones but gf doesn’t accept it at all so I can only use it when she goes out, and I always forget to buy it.

have you purchased any Hive/Leo/HBD with Fiat ??
Would you ever consider it ?
What would motivate you to purchase any crypto tokens ?
I have bought hive/leo with fiat several times to increase my influence and vp. These are probably the my biggest motivations for doing so. Increased earnings also help
Not directly, but through $BTC indirectly.
any specific reason why you purchased Hive/leo/HBD ??
To get more! 🤣
Building from scratch was too slow. Had to speed it up. 😀
never with fiat, simply because i don't know how in the US
would be awesome to have a reliable on/off ramp
You can use Transak to buy Hive/HBD. Leo's a little more complicated, though.
interesting. how are the fees and does it require KYC?
Fees are pretty reasonable as far as I'm concerned. I don't believe any KYC is required. They might want it for larger transactions, but not for anything I would have done.
Hive/Leo/HBD no. BTC yes. I have thought about using some fiat to purchase Hive/Leo/HBD because I have a decent amount of faith in the platform and I'd love to have a powerful vote to help people out on it.
yes having more voting power (HP) can help people and help change the governance up.
yea I did couple of weeks ago when market crashed and had some fiat..
I don't keep fiat other than what I need irl..
sold a first edition Dune book this morning for a cool $245
gunna be a good day
Time to party! Wait I mean buy some more crypto! 😀
les goooo
Nice! I would love to have a first edition Dune on my shelf, but not enough to buy it for that price... probably. If I didn't have to worry about the repercussions from my wife, I'd probably do that. #favoritebooks
haha i was shocked how much they're selling for

How do I make an Inleo Shorts video? #freecompliments #cent
Simply press the camera button on the bottom of the thread.
That said it doesnt appear shorts are going through at the moment.
wow wow wow thanks brother, I think I'll focus on Shorts and wait for it to go through then #freecompliments #cent
Just click the video camera icon under the thread box (between image and poll icons) and away you go. Although they may not be going through properly at the moment.

Thread Day #161
Foco no HP agora!

SpaceX will launch first mission with astronauts walking in space
SpaceX, the company owned by South African billionaire Elon Musk, is preparing its next mission, which will take astronauts to walk in space. The trip has just been officially scheduled, and should take place on August 26th.
It is SpaceX's first attempt to send astronauts to walk in space - and the first endeavor of its kind in the private space exploration sector. The mission, called Polaris Dawn, represents the first of three flights purchased by fellow billionaire Jared Isaacman. As Isaacman stated to CNBC, the flight should launch in the early hours of the 26th, in Florida.

Do you pay attention to what is going on with space #technology?
Not as much as I would like. But I'm very interested in space exploration.
Regarding space technology, it's incredible what SpaceX is doing and giving us the possibility of saving a lot of money with the propellants that return to Earth.
I remember the day this test went well, I celebrated as if it were a goal. LOL
I was happy because I knew that from that moment on, we would make significant progress with space exploration.
We will see what they come up with. I dont follow them closely either.
I think one of the focuses at the moment is returning to the Moon with a crew.
With the technology we have today, it will be very interesting to see what we can see and do there.
It seems there are a lot of different things in focus. Time to keep pushing forward with technological advancement.
We all have a part in this even if we are doing little things like on here.
@mightpossibly Did you see this?
Interesting advancement.

Gemini Live could use some more rehearsals
Gemini Live, Google's answer to OpenAI's Advanced Voice Mode, is now available. But it needs some serious work.
What’s the point of chatting with a human-like bot if it’s an unreliable narrator — and has a colorless personality?
That’s the question I’ve been turning over in my head since I began testing Gemini Live, Google’s take on OpenAI’s Advanced Voice Mode, last week. Gemini Live is an attempt at a more engaging chatbot experience — one with realistic voices and the freedom to interrupt the bot at any point.
#technology #ai #gemini #chatgpt

Former Google CEO Spills ALL! (Google AI is Doomed)
Summary in comments ⏬
Here's a summary of the key points from Eric Schmidt's interview at Stanford:
AI Impact: Schmidt believes the impact of AI will be much larger than social media's impact when delivered at scale.
Google's Culture: Schmidt criticized Google for prioritizing work-life balance over "winning" in AI development.
AI Leaders: He sees the gap widening between frontier AI companies (likely OpenAI, Anthropic, Google) and others.
Energy Requirements: Schmidt highlighted the massive energy needs for AI development, suggesting partnerships with Canada for hydropower.
AI Investment: He noted a potential investment bubble in AI, with around $1 trillion invested but only $30 billion in revenue so far.
Key AI Developments: Schmidt emphasized three key areas:
AI Regulation: He mentioned a threshold of 10^26 FLOPS above which companies would need to report AI development to the government.
Global AI Competition: Schmidt sees the US-China competition for "knowledge supremacy" as the defining battle of our lifetimes.
Misinformation Concerns: He expressed worry about AI's potential to generate convincing misinformation, especially during elections.
Future of Programming: Schmidt suggested that AI will significantly boost programmer productivity and may eventually reduce the need for human programmers.
Geopolitical AI Landscape: He discussed various countries' positions in AI development, noting India's potential and Europe's regulatory challenges.
Advice for Entrepreneurs: Schmidt emphasized the importance of rapid prototyping using AI tools, suggesting that ideas should be prototyped within a day to stay competitive.
Pakistan's PostEx to enter new markets, starting with Saudi Arabia
#newsonleo #postex #technology #ecommerce

And he’s a board member of the crypto nonprofit advocacy and lobbying organization Coin Center, which champions for policies like anonymity for crypto holders from the IRS.

Starpath accelerates moon water mining plans with $12M seed funding

Reliant's paper-scouring AI takes on science's data drudgery
#technology #ai

Demand for AI is driving data center water consumption sky high
The demand for AI is fueling a data center boom, which in turn is driving up the consumption of water to cool equipment in those data centers.
The AI boom is fueling the demand for data centers and, in turn, driving up water consumption. (Water is used to cool the computing equipment inside data centers.) According to FT, in Virginia — home to the world’s largest concentration of data centers — water usage jumped by almost two-thirds between 2019 and 2023, from 1.13 billion gallons to 1.85 billion gallons.
#ai #technology #water

The Waymo robotaxi honking problem has been resolved for real this time
The great nightly Waymo honk-a-thon — in which the company’s robotaxis erupted into a chorus of honking at night’s end in a San Francisco parking lot— was resolved, then not.
#waymo #technology #robotaxi #newsonleo
Now, another patch has been issued, per an interview Monday between Tung and Waymo Director of Product and Operations Vishay Nihalani on her livestream. Nihalani explained that while it makes a lot of sense for Waymos to honk on public roads, the group honking was an unintended consequence.

US drops technology export bans for Australia and United Kingdom
The Biden administration has lifted most bans on defense technology sharing with Australia and the United Kingdom in order to fast-track the development of emerging weapons technologies among the allies.
“These critical reforms will revolutionize defense trade, innovation and cooperation, enabling collaboration at the speed and scale required to meet our challenging strategic circumstances,” Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles said Thursday.
#technology #defense

Tyler Perry pauses studio expansion ‘indefinitely’ due to latest AI technology
Director Tyler Perry said his $800 million studio expansion is now “indefinitely on hold” after he saw what OpenAI’s Sora program can do.
Last week, OpenAI announced its latest artificial intelligence program could turn text into video clips that are up to one minute long. According to the company, the advancement means that its AI can “understand and simulate the physical world in motion.” Perry sees this as an opportunity for the film industry but is also worried about job losses, according to an interview with the Hollywood Reporter.
#technology #Hollywood #tylerperry #ai

Things are changing at a rapid pace.

Do you believe this?
#ai #technology #agi
AGI by 2027 is strikingly plausible. GPT-2 to GPT-4 took us from ~preschooler to ~smart high-schooler abilities in 4 years. Tracing trendlines in compute (~0.5 orders of magnitude or OOMs/year), algorithmic efficiencies (~0.5 OOMs/year), and “unhobbling” gains (from chatbot to agent), we should expect another preschooler-to-high-schooler-sized qualitative jump by 2027.
Runway’s Gen-3 Alpha Turbo is here and can make AI videos faster than you can type

Here is what Claude3 had to say:
What is the easiest way to make money off AI
Increase your income:
Live below your means:
Invest consistently and wisely:
Start a business:
Network and build relationships:
Protect and grow your wealth:
Be patient and persistent:
AI-Driven Career Optimization:
AI-Assisted Budgeting and Saving:
AI-Enhanced Investing:
AI-Powered Business Ventures:
AI-Optimized Real Estate Investing:
AI-Enhanced Networking:
Continuous AI-Driven Optimization:
AI-Assisted Side Hustles:
AI Security and Risk Management:
This program aims to use AI as a tool to enhance traditional wealth-building strategies. It's important to note that while AI can provide valuable insights and efficiencies, human judgment, hard work, and ethical considerations remain crucial.
It is strikingly plausible that by 2027, models will be able to do the work of an AI researcher/engineer. That doesn’t require believing in sci-fi; it just requires believing in straight lines on a graph.
#ai #technology
#ai #technology
We are racing through the OOMs extremely rapidly, and the numbers indicate we should expect another ~100,000x effective compute scaleup—resulting in another GPT-2-to-GPT-4-sized qualitative jump—over four years. Moreover, and critically, that doesn’t just mean a better chatbot; picking the many obvious low-hanging fruit on “unhobbling” gains should take us from chatbots to agents, from a tool to something that looks more like drop-in remote worker replacements.
ChatGPT timeline:
On everything from AP exams to the SAT, GPT-4 scores better than the vast majority of high schoolers.
The raw intelligence is (mostly) there, even if the models are still artificially constrained; it’ll take extra work to unlock models being able to fully apply that raw intelligence across applications.
This is a very interesting chart.

Meta’s Self-Taught Evaluator enables LLMs to create their own training data
Human evaluation has been the gold standard for assessing the quality and accuracy of large language models (LLMs), especially for open-ended tasks such as creative writing and coding. However, human evaluation is slow, expensive, and often requires specialized expertise.
Researchers at Meta FAIR have introduced a novel approach called the Self-Taught Evaluator, which leverages synthetic data to train LLM evaluators without the need for human annotations. The method comes with a few caveats, but it could significantly improve the efficiency and scalability of LLM evaluation for enterprises that want to build custom models.
#technology #meta #ai #newsonleo
The challenges of LLM evaluation
Article

Shein sues Temu over copyright infringement, alleges rival loses money on every sale
#technology #temu #lawsuit
Wow! This is a serious accusation. This Temu recently arrived in Brazil.
I haven't even checked out what this platform is like yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if she did this with Shein hahaha...
Competition in the market is very high.
Yeah a lot changing. It does show how valuable platforms can become.
Yes, you are right. A lot will still happen and those who don't adapt will be left behind.

AI
Here are some potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) in our lives going forward, mainly in the future:
Improved efficiency and productivity: AI can help reduce time wasted on repetitive and routine tasks, allowing people to focus on more creative and valued activities.
Health and well-being: AI can contribute to early disease diagnosis, severe episode prediction, and personalized medical treatment. Additionally, it can assist in developing technologies that improve the quality of life for people with disabilities.
#technology #ai #future
Mobility and transportation: AI can help optimize traffic flow, reducing congestion and increasing transport system efficiency. Moreover, it can contribute to the development of safer and more efficient autonomous vehicles.
Education: AI can help personalize learning, adapting to individual students' needs and identifying talents and aptitudes.
It is essential to note that artificial intelligence also presents challenges and risks, but addressing them appropriately is crucial for realizing its full potential benefits.

#space #technology
Computer ai algorithms see a 5x increase per year. This has held for most of the last decade.

How NVIDIA is using structured weight pruning and knowledge distillation to build new Llama models
#technology #ai #nividia #llama #llm
Compact Language Models via Pruning and Knowledge Distillation
