For me, it was the discovery of writing as a way to express myself - rather than screaming into a pillow. ;D
Right, I sure can relate to that too, eventhough I have always written ( but most often not for an audience ).
I ( mainly ) used to teach filmmaking.
When you watch films, do you enjoy the film, or pick them apart? :)
Good question. It really depends of the mood that I'm in, how tired I am and how often I have seen a movie before. That, plus whether I am being immersed into the story ( due to good storytelling, interesting characters and so on ).
I most definitely pick up on more than the average viewer, as I analyzed hundreds or probably thousands of films when in Uni but I can still enjoy a film and dive into it, when I really want to and it ticks my boxes.
Do you have a top 5 of "must watch brilliance" - I am always curious, since I don't watch much these days, so when i do - I want it to be good.
I could make a dozen of "5 brilliant movies" lists ( for instance per genre, decade and so on ).
but, from the top of my head here's 5 of my very favorite ones, in chronological order:
Psycho (1960), Don't Look Now (1973), Suspiria (1977), Alien (1979), Blue Velvet (1986)
P.S. I used to blog about movie recommendations, but that's a year or 4 ago. It stopped being fun, as it probably reminds me too much of University ;<)
Thanks!
I have only seen 2 out of the 5 I think. I have been meaning to try to get into some David Lynch films/shows, but haven't got around to it. I don't mind the quirk.
Do you know there is community of movie reviewers? Not sure how good it is all up, but might be fun for you to play there :)
2 out of 5. Which ones? I suggest you check my reply to creativemary 's comment ( on here ). I tagged you there, so you'll probably find it. It links to a list of many more recommendations.
And talking about movie communities ( see that same comment for why I don't necessarily feel good there. Yes, I have been part of those and been posting in such communities for quite a while.
Let's say that I much rather watch movies than write or read about them. The latter isn't much fun for me. Somewhat traumatic, I guess. Also, most movie reviews mainly focus on plot. I prefer personal stories around watching a film, memories and so on.
Psycho and Alien.
I don't read movie reviews myself - as not only do I not want spoilers, I want to experience the movie with as little outside influence as possible. Not always easy these days as every movie comes with an inordinate amount of shill advertising that gets spread even further by people. Luckily, I pick and choose what i do on the internet - I am a bad consumer. - as I consume so little :)
will get back to you tomorrow. A top 5 is tough, as I have a couple of hundred of favorite movies but I'll see what I can do ;^)
I would love a top 5 best movies too, you could totally do a post Vincent. And maybe top 5 black and white movies. As not many watch those anymore, but I would love to know your opinion.
As I just told Tarazkp, in a reply, I lost the fun of writing about ( other people's ) movies. Let me think of a list of 5 amazing black and white movies...
M (1931), Sunset Boulevard (1950), The Night of the Hunter (1955), (Psycho (1960), The Elephant Man (1980).
I could easily come up with a lot more but here's a start ;<)
Thanks so much Vincent, I will remember this and watch them. I think that as in any domain any specialist can often become tired to be asked the same questions all over again hahaha. So I truly appreciate that you have made the mental effort to give me this list.
I wish you a lovely New Year and a better happier 2022 Vincent 🥰🤗
