I was thinking about gratitude today and how the simple act of showing it can have such a huge impact and influence upon a person; I don't just mean the person being shown the gratitude, but also those showing gratitude towards others. It is a powerful and meaningful emotion.
In my contemplation's about gratitude I was reminded of a quote I read some time ago by a gentleman called Marcus Tullius Cicero, Governor of Cilicia and Consul of Rome. This Academic Sceptic philosopher, lawyer and Statesman of Rome said many wise things before his assassination in 43BC including this lovely quote about gratitude that came to mind today:
Gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all the others. - Cicero
Thank you Cicero, I completely agree; Great minds think alike it seems. 😉
[Image removed]
Gratitude doesn't always extend from one person to another though; Sometimes one just feels grateful and that's how I was feeling yesterday.
You see, my wife Faith has been undergoing testing for cancer over the last three weeks; It's been a torrid few weeks of testing and uncertainty.
Yesterday was the last stage and we spent the morning with the oncology haematologist (blood cancer doctor) who delivered some good news. Sure, there's a couple of other little tests, but it seems Faith is free of cancer for which we are both very grateful. She has a few issues to sort out, but being cancer free was welcome news...We can now work on the other things.
That's why I was thinking about gratitude, and was feeling so grateful. I don't know what would be left of me if Faith was taken away; Not much is probably the answer and so...Yeah, you get the idea.
Today, whilst feeling grateful, I started working on the #weekend-engagement post for this Friday and, as I was typing in the names of the sponsors, I felt inclined to do a post expressing my gratitude to them for their continued support.
That's legit and it's indicative of the quality one can find within the hive community. It makes me feel proud to be a part of.Each week a group of people send me some hive for the prize pool which gets distributed amongst some of the entrants each week. Some of those are actual #weekend-engagement winners sending their hive-prize back, paying it forward for someone else to benefit from.
To the following hive community members I'd like to thank you for your support of the #weekend-engagement initiative:
@krazzytrukker, @mamalikh13, @preparedwombat, @tarazkp, @stevenwood, @abh12345, @globalcurrencies, @meesterboom, @bigtom13, @bil.prag, @dswigle, @m31, @ryivhnn, @creativemary, @bashadow, @mikepm74, @badfinger.
The word thank you is the simplest ways of showing gratitude so, thank you sponsorship team, your support is very much appreciated!
quality operators and are welcome around my campfire any day!In the past seven weeks of the #weekend-engagement contest 608 hive has been handed out to the winners, transferred directly to their account, for nothing more than a simple comment, just a small amount of engagement. That has been made possible by those above who have supplemented my small hive-injection with their own. What a bunch of champs! You're all
I hope you'll go and check out their accounts and see what you find because I can assure you there's plenty of great content there to cater for any taste. Throw them a comment or two and engage with them - They're all great people and will engage back.
If you want to sponsor the #weekend-engagement concept feel free to transfer the hive to my wallet with the message weekend-engagement sponsorship and you'll get mentioned in the post.
1,930 comments y'all! That's a lot of comments and a lot of engagement...This traction is largely due to the support of the people you see above. (This figure only counts comments on the actual topic announcement post, not the winners announcement post so in reality is much larger!)In the seven weeks I've been running the #weekend-engagement concept the initiative has put 1,930 comments onto the blockchain...
If you're keen on learning more about the #weekend-engagement topic come back to my posts on Friday afternoon/evening and you'll find it...You'll have all weekend to get involved. It's a great way to engage with the community and to win some hive.
Now...Back to gratitude.
What I'd like to see in the comments below is who or what you are grateful for. It can be a hive user, family member, friend, colleague, your job, health, a book you read...Literally anything you are grateful for.
There's no hive to win, just the awesome feeling of showing gratitude, and some engagement from the G-dog (that's me) and maybe others in the community too.
Thanks for coming by and having a read.

Wow, so many good things in your life❤️
I don't know about other things, but I would for sure have dark chocolates today😄
Changed your profile image?
P.s. Chocolate on any day is something to be grateful for. Lol.
Mathew says use your own image as a profile pic(just like Galenkp and Tarazkp😛 )to look human. People will connect with you more.lol, @sidwrites and
I agree...Not having a human identity here is a negative I think. This is why I used my real name. It shows personality and a certain genuineness.
Lol, now I have to change my name....😜
Lol...Nah, it's all good.
Oh YEAH - dark chocolate is a winner! I can't eat too much or I get a headache...
Hey, you forgot to mention Quarry in a Melbourne hotel...You're grateful for that too right? Such a good time of your life.

tokens.I am grateful for my wife. We survived her two rounds of cancer, that helped me survive my round of cancer, and I am grateful for the person that let you and your wife know that things can get better. We all face adversity in the world, we all need a caring word at times. I am grateful to all those that can show a little compassion to their fellow human beings.
Life shouldn't be this hard, but it is at times; All we can do is move with it, influence it our way when possible and try and design our best versions of it. I have a lot of time for people who have suffered great adversity, they always have such valuable things to say. Case in point: You.
Thanks for your reply and for your support of the #weekend-engagement sponsorship.

I am extremely grateful for all my people in my life. Without them life would be miserable and lifeless.
Gratitude for the people around you is a great use of the attribute. I am the sort of dude who tells people that I am grateful for them, not just if they've done something for me, but just because. I think it's nice to say thank you or to tell a person that you are glad they are around...It makes me feel good and them too.
Thanks for commenting, it's much appreciated.

tokens.Wow! That is such great news for your wife! Cancer is such a horrible adversary. I know someone personally going through Stage 4 Renal cancer right now and it is hard to watch him fade away. He's a fighter, so he is still fighting, but the jovial wonderful person we all know and love is being taken from us too early, and it sucks.
There are so many things to be grateful for these days... health, being able to continue to work, and work from home, through these times. Of course family and friends.
But outside of the obvious things to be grateful for, I am going to throw in a wierd one. I am grateful for PlexCoin.
You see, I really knew nothing about Crypto prior to seeing Facebook Sponsored adds for Plexcoin in the summer of 2017. I have HEARD OF Bitcoin, but never gave it much credit. Odd take for someone who had spent the better part of a decade trying to catch the next big get rich quick idea, but there I was. I decided to check out PlexCoin and even sent in $100 to buy in. Of course that one was a scam, in fact there is an article that was posted just yesterday about the founders being indicted.
But without PlexCoin and trying to research it, and other crypto, I never would have found Crypto in general, or STEEM in particular. The value of my portfolio, even having lost 90% of it's value because I bought so much during the bull run and rode the tokens all the way down, is still higher than the cash I put in, so that $100 has been repaid to me from other tokens I invested in, and the time investment in STEEM that has allowed me to use the profits from my intellectual work to buy tokens.
So as a trigger to open up the greater world of Crypto, I am grateful for the scam that was PlexCoin.
This is cool...Not that it was a scam, but because you are grateful to a negative event for leading you into what has been a positive for you.
I knew next to nothing about crypto until 2017 also when I joined that other platform you mention. Magic internet money all seemed so unreal, so scammy. Ah yes, when I think about 2010...I was 40 years old and heard about BTC for the first time then discounted it as bullshit...Ah yes, How I wish I was not such an idiot! :)
It wasn't my time I guess...Although ten years later...I'd be a millionaire had I thrown $1000 into it.
So, we both know about crypto now and have the chance to make some gains. I hope this is the case...And I will be grateful to my brother @tarazkp for pestering me to get onto that other platform and to learn about it.
I like your spin on gratitude fella...Legit.

A nice reminder for sure. I think it's good to have these physical reminders because life can get so busy and people forget to show a little gratitude for the simple things. Well done.

tokens.[silent screaming] I am so glad to hear Faith is cancer-free, I have had more than enough of all aspects of that thing seriously x_x
Aaaaahhhhh I only managed to help you with one of them XD
What am I grateful for? Everything really XD My families are healthy and I'm living in a time and place where being weird and occasionally rude/sarcastic isn't going to make me dead (I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have survived long in past eras XD).
I'm grateful you decided to drop past and comment! I thought you got abducted by aliens or something...Been busy?
Nice to be grateful for family and health...I think that's a fairly common one amongst those who like to show gratitude. It's certainly high up on my list. I think it's great to verbalise it too, not just think it.
Oh yeah, that bastard cancer can fuck off huh? Very unwelcome. We're happy Faith is all good from that perspective. The original issue exists but we'll work through that and get to the bottom of it.
!ENGAGE 20
I hope you find what the original issue is and that it's not too hard to resolve.
I'm not going anywhere, I'm quite fond of this planet (could do without some of the people on it but can't have everything). Sorry I haven't been commenting so much, yeh things have gotten somewhat insane ^_^;
Lol, yeah I figured you were busy, it's all good.
We're hoping to learn some more about the situation but are really happy it's not the cancer scenario everyone was saying it could be. We'll just have to ride it out and see how things go, learn what we can, then deal with it.
I hope you have a good run into the end of the week. Catch ya!

tokens.I'm grateful for being able to walk again today. It may be normal to be able to walk and take everything for granted, you may only realise that when you can't walk anymore.
So today I'm grateful I can make a few steps on my own 😊
Great post by the way.
Walking should never be taken for granted so I'm glad you are able to walk again.
I have a good friend who stepped on a land mine on the battlefield. He lost one leg in an instant and the other was taken later as it was so damaged. He has prosthetic legs now, but for years was unable to walk. He never complained though, just got on with his life...Now he walks and it's amazing to see such happiness on his face just through doing something many take for granted.
It's a nice thing to be grateful that you can walk @erikah and I hope you continue to walk more and more.
Thanks for responding.

tokens. You know? That's just stupid good news re:Faith. Hell, makes me grateful.
Just this morning I noted in my journal that I'll do a 'gratitude list' in August. Rules are simple. Every day you write one thing you are grateful for. No stockpiling, it has to be every day and each day must be different.
My mentor that introduced me to this concept wrote my first entry for me. "I'm grateful that my doors and windows don't have bars on them." That was 30 years ago and it's still profound for me. I've done at least one per year since, and I like it. Focuses my feelings of gratitude.
Today I'm grateful for people on Hive that encourage me. It's a long list but you would fit in there. It's a good life.
Now this is what I'm talking about Tom! Nicely said and a great little gratitude concept. Little, but powerful.
I wake up and run through a list of things I'm grateful for each day, every day...Faith is on there, the fact I woke up and that I live in a peaceful country with a roof over my head also. There's other things too, different each day as you say.
I also make sure I tell people around me: work people, Faith, the girl at the cafe who brings my bacon and eggs in the morning and so on...Showing gratitude isn't just about big things, as you say.
Nice reply Tom , thanks mate.
Oh, I dig the fact you have a mentor. I fill this role for a few, and have one of my own...Valuable.

tokens.I've been practicing gratitude for few years now. It started with writing down my daily gratitude list in a notebook then I participated in/created gratitude challenges and posts on the blockchain. The most common things I am grateful for are a cup of coffee, sunsets and our family garden so at this point those things kind of 'trigger' my gratitude. Finding gratitude in the simple, everyday things is my favorite.
Glad to hear you got some good news from the doctor, sending a lot of positive vibes your way! :)
Exactly! It's not just about big things, momentous occasions; Gratitude can be felt and shown all day every day which clearly you do. It seems like you're a gratitude ninja although in your profile picture you are not ninja-like at all! Lol
I'm grateful for your comment and pleased to hear you practice gratitude all the time. Nice work @nikolina.

Haha, thanks! I still deal with negative thoughts and 'life is not fair' moments, I get in a rut of feeling down and all that jazz. :)
But I do feel like gratitude and just being more gentle with myself when these phases come helped me a lot to deal with them.
We all have down moments, even gratitude-ninjas like you. It's what we do in the down moments, the bad times, that defines us though...It's a chance to be our best when life challenges us. 🙂

tokens.I will be always grateful for the books I have read in my life. It changed my perception and made me believe in myself.
I always used to believe that I was too dumb to do anything in this world, and too introvert to connect with anyone, talk to anyone.
I would like to thank @sidwrites for introducing me to books. He told me in 2017, read "How to wind friends and influence people". After reading it, it wasn't like I was changed but it had quite a big effect on me.
I knew I was doing a lot of things wrong.
Then I read "Think and grow rich"....and I got to know about the power of determination and will.
This year, I read "Can't hurt me" by David Goggins, and understood that how much you can achieve in life by working hard and believing in yourself.
Also, Atomic habits and compound effect...how small habits repeated daily can shape your life....And that's why I started writing daily on hive.
I have read over 70 books in the last 3 years. Must have skimmed 100 or more. And in all that, I got to know that I was no different. I was just talking myself down. I was same as the world.
I would be grateful to all those people who shared their wisdom through words.
And I am grateful to you today that you helped me remind all those great books, the people and instances through your post. Thanks a lot.🙂
Books are a cool thing to be grateful for. Through books one can gain the collective wisdom of the world without having to leave home...I read a lot, usually a book a week, and never stop learning. I like that you mentioned HTWFAIP by Dale Carnegie...Such a good book, life changing if one takes it all on board and adapts the lessons to one's own life.
!ENGAGE 25
Wow, one book a week. You must have read hundreds of books then. I see you are quite interested in history.
In other life, you could be a history professor in a university.😄
I read fast, always have, and no matter where I go I have a book with me. I have been known to read standing up whist waiting for my coffee at the cafe in the morning. Not sure if I was a professor...If I was I would have been a mad professor!
Lol, day by day you are becoming my most favourite person on hive.😅
Haha...Well, you must like wacky people then...Because that's what I am sometimes!

Yeah...It's been a tough few weeks for many reasons but we're a little more settled now I guess. We still need to get to the bottom of a few things, the reason for the situation in the first place, but are happy it's not cancer related. Not knowing is a very difficult thing when it comes to one's health.
Totally man. One thing at a time but a great hurdle to be over!
Yes...It was odd...we didn't whoop and holler...Just sort of drove away in silence. I think we were both just feeling so grateful and happy...Words weren't needed.
Fucking hurdles man...At my age too...WTF! Lol.
Beautiful post. Being grateful is what we forget to be. It is very important to be grateful to our existence and then our relationships. It serves the purpose of our life.
Thank you and I agree. Gratitude, being grateful is a very important thing. It shows humility and a certain kindness too. Thanks for your reply.
Excellent news from the docs! My dad had a hat like the on Faith is sporting in the photo, his had a few holes in though as it was originally a tea cosy :)
So was Faith's...Ok, don't tell her I said that...It's actually a beanie. Seriously, don't tell her or I might end up in big trouble. 😂
I have a few blondes in my phone book but you will be pleased to know Faith is not one - secret safe :)
I have a beanie like that too...There's a picture on the chain somewhere so I can't pick on hers really can I? Lol.
Awww this is such a great post Galen! First I am so happy that Faith is ok and the C word is out of the window, so happy for both of you I would just hug you hahahha. Indeed, a life without your loved one is a terrible thought. No point in thinking about that.
Gratitude is amazing. I do appreciate that you mentioned it. There are many great people on Hive and I am so happy I managed to remain on this platform and slowly show more of me and slowly see more of everyone else.
I am grateful for having this online community. It must sound like a cliche. But when I discovered Hive I was really going through a hard time. Few people maybe know it and remember it. But I am so grateful that I can wake up every morning and know that somewhere, in many corners of this Planet, some people actually care about what will Mary write. I feel humble and honoured, I was never the popular kid or with a bunch of friends. So now.... I feel like one of the cool kids on the Hive block. And I see many just like me. And it really motivated me to keep on going. I am grateful for the precise moment when Hive entered my life. So yup.
As a side note, I am also grateful I have managed to read some books on anger, forgiving, which made me reconsider my thinking patterns and become even better in choosing the right people to enter my life.
So many people fail to display gratitude; They may feel it but don't show it and that seems a bit odd to me.
I'm one who is happy to show it and say it. I think it's just as valuable to me personally as it is to the person I'm saying it to. I think it shows humility too, and I've found people respond to that.
Anyway, good to see hive is ticking some boxes.
You are a great guy. Legit as you would say hihi. I'm grateful to know you're one of my Hive friends. You're pretty awesome, next to all of my other Hive friends too.
Thanks Mary, I have my moments, good and bad I guess, like most. I try to be the best version of myself though and I reckon I'm ok mostly. A good friend, brother and husband. Some may disagree.
Yup, I can agree with you on this one. I'm not perfect either. I try to be a good person every day but I think we should also be aware of the fact that we can't please everybody and that some people might not like us. That's just life....
Glad to know Faith is cancer free👍 I am great full that I have been able to get to Queensland from Tasmania just before travel got very difficult. As I am now here to be able to help my mother with moving to a new home.
Yeah, we're really happy as you'd imagine I guess.
Do you know what the situation is with entering Tassie these days! 14 days quarantine?
No idea at this time mate as I haven't had any intention of going back for a long time.
Just had a look and Tas border set to open with SA and NT from 7 August.
I can imagine how stressful it might have been going through the tests and waiting for the results. I am happy for both of you!
It's a good result as cancer runs in my wife's family. Her dad died of blood cancer at 33 and her mum is just getting over bowel cancer that almost killed her. We are relieved Faith is clear. 🙂
I'm grateful about everything that has happended to me and the people who area around me (my family, my girlfriend and my friends), they all had made me be who I am today, and even when I have some bad experience, there is something I could learn about and become better each day
One can be grateful for bad experiences I think, because they can often lead one into new directions and good experiences, don't you think? Through failure comes success...My dad used to tell me that each failure prepared me a little more for success and now as I get older I share that same advice.
Thanks for your comment.
I share the same thoughts, experiences make us be better and it not always come in thr form of good moments, but for sure experiences will let us a great an valuable sample of what and what not to do
We are grateful to be able to do what we want each day, our dream career - in addition, happiness, health, wealth and small circle of supportive friends, virtual or physical, lots more but thats a start. ps great news wife etc
Nice things to be grateful for. In a society that values things over experiences (in my opinion anyway) it's nice to see how many have answered here about gratitude for the small things in life rather than the items in it.
That really shows us something really good about the community that surrounds and supports us.
I agree...Hive is a nice group of people in the main, and it's a pleasure to engage with cool people like yourselves and some of the other's who take the time to reach out.

Yeah, we were pleased with the news. Nice to hear something positive.
I'm working on living more the present instead of the past or the future which is not clear anyway and be grateful for every single morning I get to wake up again.. the rest are just details..
Waking up is something to be grateful for and something probably many take for granted.
So delighted to read through these lines.
Gratitude is like a medicine which I've found with zero side effects... I'm grateful for such an inspiring post
Many are grateful for hive and the posts that are added to the blockchain. I think it's a legit thing to be grateful for.
I totally agree with you on that
That's a whole bucket load of comments, and it certainly shows how you've managed to bring a lot of engagement and fun into things. I'm looking forward for tomorrow's engagement post, no matter how weird it might be.
But most importantly, fantastic news for Faith and to the both of you! It's no doubt a huge relief for everyone, including to us Hivers who've been following along. Hope you're keeping yourself as well, and cheery as always 😄

Dude...If you don't come up with some #weekend-engagement gold for this weekend I'm coming up to Malaysia to kick your fucking ass, I mean this!
Actually, as it turns out, we were invited to Malaysia recently (for when we can travel again) by a Brigadier General (retired) formerly the second in command of the military there who was one of my dad's first students in Malaysia. He credits my dad for his success.
It's a good story actually. This lads father had died and he left school to provide for the family. My dad ended up paying for his education, his books, fees and providing food for the family so the lad could stay in school. He finished and then joined the military. That's the short version.
Anyway, he asked Faith and I to come up and stay with him and his family. We are thinking about it as it would be a huge honour. Anyway, just a little story for you...Just to prove that someday I'll be up that way to kick your ass if you don't come up with some Zachary-gold this weekend!
Ah, I remember that story of your dad and the general from a while back. It's a very nice and thoughtful story; a reminder of how awesome your dad was, bless his soul. I guess you coming to Malaysia is another reminder for me to shit some actual gold for tomorrow. The pressure is on...
Lol...Pressure is on for sure. If you think the naughty corner is bad wait until younger a smackdown in the naughty corner. Double whammy.
Please, have mercy. My skin is tender...
Lol...Love me some Monty Python.
The beast with great pointy teeth!
Other than the "'tis but a scratch" incident with the Black Knight, the Killer Bunny scene is no doubt the best moment in the Holy Grail, I find. Also, I just remembered those scenes with the Frenchman... And the Knights of Ni, and pretty much everything else 🤣
