Getting users to stay active(Keys to get new users to stay active on Hive)

in OCD5 years ago

I read a publication from @daltono about how to get new users active on Hive blockchain. As a long time Steemian, and Hiver now, I have had so many experiences bringing in people to the blockchain. I was invited here by @knowledges 3 years ago, and he explained the basic on how to start on the blockchain. I was trading crypto then and had many experiences of what the blockchain is, so it was quite easy for him to make me understand the basics.

When I joined and was enjoying my stay on the chain, I invited many people that also understand blockchain technology, and people that I know are consistent, but out of this people, only two are still actively using Hive till this point. I tried to pull the people that left-back here, but they seemed to have lost interest.

There are sure many things to explain to beginners on the Hive blockchain, but I realized it will be too much for some people to understand everything, talking about the RC, voting power, Hive token, HBD, and the rest. However, I chose a method of starting with the basic. I only focus more on telling new users on how to manage their keys, RC and tokens. Telling them about everything about the chain will overwhelm, and some might feel. “This isn’t for someone like me”.

Recently, I got more people on Hive as I see the love and support here. I created an account for @prezzie some months ago, but she made no post with it. So, about a month ago, I engaged her on Hive. Plus, I invited @mrspat here, and I let them know the basics of posting and key management. They got the points, and I used a simple, but tough means to make them active.

Here they are:

Guide—Answer all their questions

We all know that beginners will have a lot to ask. If they do not have someone to ask everything, they may get frustrated. So, whenever they need support. I make my discord DM open for them to ask any question, and I ensure I give them a simple and clear answer.

Something I try to use a simple analogy to get things clear for them. For instance, when I was telling them how to manage their keys, I said, “you master key/password is the key to the main gate of your house when you lost it you can’t climb your fence, and you will lose all access into your building. You can use your master key to open your flat front door (posting key), and your room (active key), then you keep your master key in a very safe place,”. This is just to make them understand properly.

Check their write-ups

This isn’t always easy, but when you invite someone here and you truly want the person to stay longer, pay some sacrifices like this. Some times when @prezzie finish writing her post, she shares with me with Hackmd. This I will help her go through it and fix a minor thing I can for her. Give her a little idea and she will feel good.

Like, comment and re-blog there post

This I often do. I make sure I re-blog, like and comment on most of their posts. This is just to make them feel that they are not alone. The support, fun and encouragement do more than the $ that might be on the post.

Give them topics to write about

Sometimes, they ask me for topics on things to write. First, I asked for their aspect of interest and told them to build on it. Also, I often give them random topics and things they can write about it. This will make them consistent even when they feel they are out of things to write.

Be consistent and never focus on votes

This is one thing that gets people out of the blockchain. When they check on the trending and they see $300 on some publications, they feel down like “why am I not getting value like this?” This has caused many people to leave the blockchain. Some will even compare their publication that it is better than those on the trending. The key, I used for these people is very simple. “The people on the trending are like you. Their consistency for year drove them there”. You could be better. Also, post for value and fun. Never focus on the $.

Be friendly and interact with other community members

Interaction is the key to know people on all social media channels, and Hive is not an exception. I send them publication to read and interact.

Conclusion

So, keeping people here is not pretty easy. Only consistent people will start active here. We all have the responsibility of building this blockchain, and we should give genuine support to each other. I call Hive a blockchain of love and support. Let’s make it work.

Absolutely not easy for some people, i noticed that from the two I have recommended so have which are. They tend to find it difficult to engage. So I start them off with Actifit which is the easiest App to use on Hive and they are doing fairly ok

Yea, Actifit is pretty easy to use, and a good start for new users.

Being kind and patient is very important like you pointed out. However, I try to ensure that I'm not convincing instead of teaching.
I know a lot of people looking for a means to earn from the internet, and while I try to inform them about it, I don't over indulge because people start getting suspicious like say I dey gain anything from them joining. Some people even reason say na referral because esteem is the easiest way to join and they have an optional question for who told you about them.

I don't over indulge because people start getting suspicious like say I dey gain anything from them joining.

You are right about this. I remember one time I explained Steem to someone, he was like, "why are you telling me"? I only smiled. We just need to ensure we guide new people that are willing to join the Hive Adventure.

Thanks so much boss for sharing your thought here.

It is easy for people who knows about blockchain tech to use the platform without finding it much difficult. I remembers @tykee gave me a little explanation when he invited me about 2 and half years ago, and I got the whole thing at a glance. It has not been easy getting a blockchain novice to understand how to go about posting and staying on the platform. I just created an account for @tacha-walker and she's yet to post her intro.

I so much agree that supporting and giving new users your time would help them stay and probably be independent at some point.

You said all @ckole. Learning is process and it will take a while for new users to get the full scope.

Hi bro! yea!!! you have been so so awesome!

You welcome!
