I see a lot of people advise using a metronome, but I will admit to not doing that so much. It's something I need to work on.

That’s right. The metronome is crucial. It won’t “make make you into a robot” or make you “too perfect.” It’s always easy to get away and let it go no matter how much you practice with it. Learning our tendencies helps us keep or loose a groove/pulse/tempo.

I've no excuse as my e-drums have one built in :) I shall resolve to use that more not that you have reminded me.
