IMHO, the secret to playing many instruments like Prince, is rhythm. Rhythmic sensitivity requires lots of exposure to a metronome. Take a shower with it. Be stuck in traffic with it. Mimic it loudly and play counting games. Bury it while it hangs from a string next to your ear while you play high-hat patterns. Live with a metronome alone in a lighthouse until you look like a seagull. 🥲 jk

I see a lot of people advise using a metronome, but I will admit to not doing that so much. It's something I need to work on.

That’s right. The metronome is crucial. It won’t “make make you into a robot” or make you “too perfect.” It’s always easy to get away and let it go no matter how much you practice with it. Learning our tendencies helps us keep or loose a groove/pulse/tempo.
