Musicians need to be a little humble and accept criticism. I know the details of timing are hard to get right. Feeling the rhythm is important and some will hear details that others won't. I'm very conscious of my limitations as a drummer.
Then there's people like Prince.
Rock on!

IMHO, the secret to playing many instruments like Prince, is rhythm. Rhythmic sensitivity requires lots of exposure to a metronome. Take a shower with it. Be stuck in traffic with it. Mimic it loudly and play counting games. Bury it while it hangs from a string next to your ear while you play high-hat patterns. Live with a metronome alone in a lighthouse until you look like a seagull. 🥲 jk
I see a lot of people advise using a metronome, but I will admit to not doing that so much. It's something I need to work on.

That’s right. The metronome is crucial. It won’t “make make you into a robot” or make you “too perfect.” It’s always easy to get away and let it go no matter how much you practice with it. Learning our tendencies helps us keep or loose a groove/pulse/tempo.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for making music.
I've no excuse as my e-drums have one built in :) I shall resolve to use that more not that you have reminded me.
