Three questions

--l.JPG

Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.

- George Bernard Shaw -

Wise words and most would probably agree but how many people are actively doing it - creating themselves and their lives? I've got no idea of course, but I know I am because I discovered the benefits of working towards a goal and applying some effort to building something solid a long while ago...and I mean more solid than that dodgy looking construction made of licorice all-sorts in the shit photo I took.

If you're human you've made mistakes throughout your life, and will again; but also if you're human you'll know that those mistakes don't define you - what you do after they happen does!

I see a lot of apathy around the place these days and much of it revolves around people's futures.

Consumerism is all about focusing people on the present, giving them the feeling they'll be missing out on something should they not "buy now" and that means people focus on the present, content with their latest purchase, figuring the future will take care of itself...but usually it won't.

I think it's easier and more comfortable for people to ignore the future for many reasons and fear that they are not ready for it is one of them, so because I'm curious I thought I'd ask three questions in the hope some of you might think about it and come up with some answers.

What are you building?

Why are you building it?

How are you building it?

I have always had a strategy for how I'd like my life to be; I think ahead and lean into my future on a short, medium and long term basis knowing it's going to happen whether I'm prepared or not.

It seems prudent, and also a really great way to ensure an agreeable, enjoyable and fulfilling present because a good present starts well before it actually happens. I've had, and have, goals and plans, been flexible when required, pivoted this way or that, and have striven towards them with focus and dedication...my future depended on it. And, there's no surprises that my presents and futures have reflected that effort, meaning they have been good.

Building

I see our lives as one continuous construction, something we build through time and the experiences we have, thoughts and attitudes too but it's a construction we get the benefit of enjoying along the way which is pretty great. It never finishes...well it does of course, when we die, but throughout the passage of our lives we build continuously and like all good constructions our lives need to have a design concept, that's our ideas and vision on what we'd like it to look like, and that vision simply won't come to pass without effort and most definitely won't happen in a single moment...which is why I think those three questions above are so important.

If you're interested in commenting you can do that below and it'd be cool if you wanted to answer those three questions in a short comment.

Life compared to a building is a classic analogy.

The ancients went right to the foundation and asked what the building was built on. The house built on the solid foundation stood the storm. The house built on the sand fell in the storm. That is beautiful, but scary if you don't know what you are building or why you are building it.

On a national level, nations are challenged on the foundations they were built on. After overthrowing a regime the new regime knows that they are building a nation and they know why, but not really how. The how is something we can't always be sure of because things will change as we go along.

On a personal level, the "what" is obvious (my life), but implies also what kind. I would say a fruitful life. I don't always agree with Confucius, but in the following quote I do:

“If your plan is for one year plant rice. If your plan is for ten years plant trees. If your plan is for one hundred years educate children.”

Why is the Ultimate Question of Life, the Universe, and Everything.

I heard the answer is 42.

42 is always the answer, it is known.

I think people fail to clarify their why and so what they (try to) build, the directions and actions they take, are not backed by the right attitude and are already sitting upon a wobbly foundation; generally speaking of course. Understanding what and why helps one focus on the how and down that path is a better future.

Thanks for your intelligent response.

Thank you for good questions^^

I'm building muscle
To climb better
By training 😜

Oddly enough I actually ruminated and wrote on this kind of topic a couple of months back. I love reading another way of viewing it, in this case as building. With people being different, different ways of expressing things will be more impactful for some than others.

I think it's easier and more comfortable for people to ignore the future for many reasons

This could certainly be a whole debate in itself. Fear that they can't control the future could be another reason, which is where a balance of being able to let things go that don't go as planned, adapt and move on.

Muscle huh? Well, that's something build for sure and when relying on one's own strength to keep from plummeting to a splat on the ground it's probably something worth building.

Sadly I still regularly splat on the ground...

We all do, what matters is what you do straight after.

Yes, it may be ironic but after spending a great part of my childhood and youth "preparing for life" I ended up being a girl without any kind of futuristic practicality.
I simply relied on the value of my profession, and it was the first mistake living in a country like mine, besides I didn't have the slightest gift to visualize opportunities, and that made me lose the best physical years of my body to build something.

Here people don't build, they only care about surviving.

Luckily, the blows teach and so do the needs, and that same luck will be conditioned if you want something important to happen in your life.
It was hard for me to understand that I had to diversify, and that the extra effort has its benefits? And even if some are less ambitious than others in their life goals, it is something that always stimulates the desire to live.
But, I am not satisfied with what I have achieved, and although age sometimes worries me it is still not a limiting factor to continue advancing.
Why do I do it?
Because I want to live in a decent way, because I need to experience what it is to really live, because I want a better future when I can no longer be worth it.
How am I doing it?
With discipline, without losing my way...persevering, calmly, and with a lot of desire.
Maybe I didn't make it when I was 25 or 30, but when I'm over 50 I can also build a new life.

People want to be rich, to have enough property, to live in luxury and abundance...I just want the freedom now to work for myself, and to secure a better future for my family in a different country.

It speaks highly of a person who can evaluate and find better ways forward and it means there's more likelihood of a better future. Sure, there's always setbacks but by the evaluation, planning and execution of new plans those setbacks can be mitigated and turned into positives.

I like your last paragraph. I think that living and enjoyable, fulfilling and meaningful life doesn't require a lot of materialistic things.

Thank you.....
I also know that the day I achieve my main goal my mind will find new goals and needs....es normal, right?

My dear little sister arrived a few months ago to USA and she tells me that she will not stop working until she is a millionaire...I make fun of her every time she does it, but deep down I am very proud and happy because I know she is doing well, and that is the most important thing.....

Have a great Thursday!

Yep, resetting goals is important.

I hope your sister attains her goal and that you can also get yourself into a new scenario/country as well.

One day, it will be.

Thanks a lot.

I am building an economic heritage, why do I build it? Because it is the legacy that I plan to leave to my children, where they can support themselves and be secure at least financially, how am I building it? The truth is that I come from scratch but life has given me the will to move forward and not waste any opportunity. At my age I feel proud because I have made great progress, with work, effort, perseverance and dedication I have achieved important things, and what My turn is to act intelligently, to know where to direct the capital that I have managed to raise with my efforts. Here in my country it is said that achieving what you set out to do is achieving it twice due to the difficult situation in the country, in terms of the crisis. political, social and economic, that is why it is important to know where when and how to invest so as not to waste time or money with any project, everything must be well calculated

Children are a good reason to build something solid, well done. It seems you have great drive and ambition and those things are required to get to where you want to get so keep on pushing.

That's right friend, I have aimed very high, maybe higher than what I can achieve, but if I like to dream big, the limits are only in our minds.

Best to reach for the stars, that way even if you miss you'll still reach high.

What are you building?
Why are you building it?

I like to believe that I am creating a better world( and financial freedom for myself). Because it is not gonna create itself. So if I want positive change I have to be part of it.

That's a great goal and I'm glad you're working on it...keep going!

I'm still figuring out what I want to build for my future, but it's definitely something I'm thinking about more lately. I think about my goals and how my actions now are shaping what comes next. It's easy to get caught up in the present, but I'm starting to see how important it is to have a vision for the future and work towards it, even if it's just small steps right now.

You haven't figured it out? Hmm, well the clock is ticking and time doesn't come back around so I hope you get something worked out.

A human being a building, its maintenance and improvement is essential to keep it from falling down.
I am building a new, different, firm life with a stable economic base with a mind to enjoy what I do.
I work every day, with effort to achieve it and I am on the right track. Every day counts.
Why... I ask myself more the why... and it is to reach a point where the enjoyment is even greater, always working so that this building is strong and stable and serves as an inspiration.

That seems like a good strategy which I hope works out well over time. Any challenges along the way?

Yes there have been, I even thought at one point the building was falling down... even my mood was very sad, that was about four years ago, but I was able to find the strength to start again, even though I had already moved out, double start. The expectations didn't come true at the beginning and I had to change to plan B. It's good to adapt...

Good, challenges are good because they cause you to find alternatives and seek solutions and more productive paths.

It was and actually... it was the best thing that could have happened to me. Thank you always!

Building is boring compared to consumerism, Until I finally got some where and now I swear by it. Feels like I have been slowing building all my life. Building and saving for a car, home, a holiday. Even a zone 2 fitness base so I could then run fast.
Nowadays it is the Superannuation account, a bit of Hive and hopefully some compounding instead of consumerism that will see me right.

Yep, unfortunately it takes most people some time to realise that they need to start building for the future. Ironic really as if they did it early they'd be financially independent sooner.

I've got a couple different directions I could go with that one. Obviously, I am trying to build wealth through crypto here so that my wife and I can have a comfortable life in our older age. When we are gone, we'd like to be able to give something to our nieces and nephews as well. I think a better answer though is that right now I am building bonds. I'm building them by spending quality time with people close to me, in the hopes that we can make each other's lives just a little better for being part of it.

Building relationships is important and an area many people think they do ell but in reality probably do not. I think your strategy is sound, a nice balance.

Thanks, I try. I don't have a big circle, but the one I have is solid.

Yep, that's legit.

I like the simplicity behind the words and challenged by the complexity of bringing this to effect. Wonderful thoughts to send off 2024. Brilliant words to kick start “25 and the coming future.

Reading through made me notice how we as a people have put our selves second and allowed sellers and marketers to be the first voices of our lives long before we have decided where we are and where we want to go. Unfortunately this is happening at our own peril.

Agreed, many people (most probably) allow their lives to be pushed and pulled one way or another rather than them steering their own course because doing the latter takes more effort. Sad tlreally, but it's a choice people make for themselves.

I hope you have got some goals in place (and plans to attain them) for 2025.

I do and the three questions you have posed are a great foundation to a solid building. Really appreciate them.

Wishing you and yours a happy and prosperous “25
