I love wood houses. Especially the old ones. I have a thing for the scent of the air which I can breathe when I am in such a place. I adore the little sounds of the wood cracking under my footsteps. I love the rustic vibe and the fact that I can see wood getting older with the passing of time. Wood is an amazing material and if it were by me, it would be the only material I would prefer all the houses from our Planet to be built from. A bit of wooden utopia makes me smile once in a while...
In my visit of the "Dimitrie Gusti" National Village Museum from Bucharest, Romania, I had the privilege of visiting such houses. The museum opened in 1936. On 14 ha of land there are 360 monuments.
I am always pleasantly surprised by the ingeniosity of the romanian peasant and his sense of rustic architecture. I can tell you I dreamed myself living in such houses while visiting. I wish I could enter the houses and see the interior, but that is not possible for the moment.
You can see households from all over Romania, from Maramures, to Moldova, Tulcea, Sibiu. You can also take a look at washing mills peasants used to wash their clothes, a very rustic version of a modern washing machine.
The romanian peasant was a genius. He used everything from nature to provide for his family. The style of the houses are simple yet functional. I look at the houses and I see that families got along very well in a tiny house, generations got along. Now we have huge houses and modern amenities, but the human connection is lost. Here I could understand that the value of a family is in the relationship and the love they share for each other, not in the money and in the gains they could exploit from other family members. Now people value the house more than they value the family....
I visited this during winter. It was magical. I ADORE winter. I am a winter child. I could not resist to take some photos and convert them to black and white.
Although these photos were only done with my phone, one photo caught my eye and I edited it more.

Beautiful pictures and absolutely wonderful dwellings. My cousin told me that when he was in Romania it was the coldest place he ever experienced. These pictures reflect his sentiment perfectly but make these incredible wood homes look even more snug.
During winter it can be harsh, but I must tell you that in the latest years our winters changed too. Global warming reduces what once was a fierce cold december to warmy cosy spring time month. Very little snow in comparison with other years. We can only hope and actively take care of nature in the idea of having back the winter we were used to as children.
The comfort of a log/wood house is amazing. I would pick this kind of home over anything.
This is really interesting. Thank you for sharing! Gretings
Thank you, glad it was useful!
I've always fancied living in a wooden cabin in the forest, you know, in the middle of clearing somewhere, smoke wafting out of the chimney, a creek nearby...Seems like something that would make me feel relaxed and connected. I guess that's why I like camping so much, being away from society.
I have similar dreams and I think that it would serve best for a person to live freely in a nature friendly home.
Hi Mary, I hope your'e well. I'm still amazed by your notes. Whilst I couldn't read ever word of your elegant hand writing I could read enough to know you looked at my posts. That put a smile on my face, which isn't the easiest thing to do always.
I'm still holding out hopes for that cabin in the woods, but I'm not sure if I'll get it...Camping might be as close as I get.
Delighted that my elegant notes put a smile on your face. Camping is cool. Never know what future will bring.
Most people don't read posts, they look at the pictures and comment from there. You read mine though so I appreciate that.
If it has useful and educational information it would be a pity not to read. Pictures are cool too, but I prefer when they have a story behind them being written.
Well I appreciate it because most don't read posts here.
What awesome little cabins, I wouldn't mind living in one today lol, expect for the cold, lol as an African we're not used to cold, but if its someplace warm yes please, that's all I'd need
Wood is a material that retains heat very well, its energetic coefficient is really high in comparison with concrete
Makes sense, we build with bricks and concrete here so when it does get cold which is rare, you feel it in your home
