Time-travelling adventure to meet a new musical instrument!

▶️ Watch on 3Speak

We went on a time-travelling adventure yesterday. Ok, ok, it wasn't exactly an adventure, but just a regular trip to the past. It is pretty easy and normal, you get a ticket for that time machine, take a seat and adjust your seatbelt - just in case, as it can go fast (it depends on how many years you want to go back in time). I have chosen a few centuries (don't remember the exact date anymore, I think there were some turbulences in that ride that shook my mind) and landed in the middle of a traditional market. While walking in the narrow streets and smelling the freshly baked bread a strange noise came to my ear. I swear, I have never heard that sound before.

IMG_20230416_205143.jpg

My eyes also got the confirmation - something was happening there... a group of people surrounded a man, dressed in a traditional way and of course, according to the year when all of this happened. He seemed young when he was smiling, but then I saw the silver beard. An experienced storyteller was standing in front of us explaining how he got each of the tools from his workshop. Also, he was explaining about the object he was holding in his hands. It was a musical instrument, apparently, but I had to ask him at least twice about the name of the same.

Zanfoña - in Spanish... which would be Hurdy-gurdy in English (it can be also called wheel fiddle).

But he insisted on the Valencian name of the instrument - Viola de roda.

IMG_20230415_183136.jpg

Rodar would mean to roll, as he said to me in his attempts to explain to me better about the origin of the name. You roll that little handle, which makes the wheel turn. It consequently rubs the strings and we hear the sound.

He continued with a lot of dedication: There are little keys, like on the piano, but first, the black keys come and then the white. Also, low and high notes go in the opposite direction than on the piano.

IMG_20230416_150207.jpg

Then he explained about the strings, how you can tune them, the little tangents that are attached to the keys and how they change the length of the string (which changes the pitch of the note... like in the guitar for example), and a lot of other details. It was the very first time I was seeing this musical instrument in my life and remembering everything about it was not easy. The music that came out of this wooden box can't be forgotten, though. I hope you can also hear it when you press the play button of the video from this post.

IMG_20230415_183510.jpg

After some time we said goodbye to this man and thanked him for being so kind and explaining to us all about the hurdy-gurdy. However, just two streets away from this stall different music passed by us. Yes, that music passed by us, literally.

A group of musicians also dressed in a traditional way walked down the street while playing some kinds of wooden wind instruments, bagpipes and percussions.

IMG_20230415_184339.jpg

The bagpipes were so cool to see!! Well, I don't know about you but seems that I had to go back in time to see from close these musical instruments.

IMG_20230415_184343.jpg

Btw, they were very funny and entertaining, in one moment they started to sing, not in the way nowadays we could call singing... But why I am still talking and taking your time? Wouldn't be nicer if you would also just listen to them and have some fun? I was laughing a lot listening to them 😂, they definitely are good entertainers! So funny people and the walking performance they did!

IMG_20230415_184345.jpg

But don't forget to return to the present... I hope you didn't take just a one-way ticket for this time machine at the beginning of this post.

Enjoy the music, the experience and the ride in time!

Hahahaha ... how nice! You found the time machine {LOL}
I believe I heard this hurdy-whatever before. May not be in real life but in some record, track. Donno anymore, but somehow the sound sounded familiar.

From your post, I read that it may take longer when going further back in time? <My experience is that it sometimes isn't adding up. I mean, I've jumped back for centuries but travelled in a split second. Maybe the time machine went through some kinda time accelerator? Something invoked in specific circumstances? Next time when it happens, I shall take notice of this and try and figure out the reason for such fast time travelling {UPSIDE DOWN SMILEY}

Uhm, what was the fun element of these walking street musicians? Sorry for asking, tried to find the 'fun' in the video. Maybe I missed it though {SAD-ish FACE}

Glad you NJOYed some street music! {WINK}

Hahaha, I will wait for that explanation from you if there is some speed accelerator thing or not, when your next time-travel adventure happens. It seems that you also found it (the time machine) 😂

In the performance of the walking street musicians, I "died" when they started to sing 😂 As I am not sure if the singers (for example from Hive) would consider it as singing at all. And the last one, who was almost a one-man band musician was interesting (funny in a positive meaning this time ;) )

{winking back} - you writing through hive.blog? {still no emojis}

hive blog and emojis didn't quite embrace each other. it's a bit of a one-sided thing. hive dot blog is somehow allowing emoji to appear, but isn't actively involved in appearing process 😉
street musicians: I guess when I was young I've seen the band-in-one type of street musicians more than once. in the street but also in that playhouse I lived in for years, the house that is referred to as boarding school. perhaps the reason why I was a bit flat on emotions when watching the vid 😉

Maybe you were forced to walk and carry that kind of a small orchestra on you? That was the moment you decided that you will not be a musician ;D

The only instrument that was kinda forced on me was the block flute. As far as I remember only once in music class. Not sure if this was early primary school or a bit later though. Anyways, just one time. I tried. And then I said: It's not my thing. Or something like that. Orrrr maybe I invented this event...don't know and can't tell 😆😆😆

I remember you mentioning that block flute thing when you were in school. I didn't like it either. But I had a melodica that my father brought me from somewhere (a business trip if I am not mistaken) so I preferred to take that to school instead of the block flute. ;)

Or something like that. Orrrr maybe I invented this event...don't know and can't tell 😆😆😆

😂😂😂

It's a hurdy-gurdy! I saw a few street musicians in Boston trying their skills at them. What a fun post and what a great player of the bagpipes. :) It just wouldn't sound the same without his traditional clothing. It adds to the entire feel!

It sure made me smile! I am such a great tourist.

Thanks for taking us along with you! Hey!! Wait up! I ned to hop on a travel back!

Hahaha, have a safe journey returning to the present 😁

I saw it for the first time here, but while he was explaining about the hurdy-gurdy I realized this instrument exists in other countries too. And an instrument that has a pretty long history already. Well, as I said, I had to take this time trip to see and hear it 😉

But that place and time... hm... the market... I will show just the flyer (the English side of it, as I guess the Spanish and Valencian would not be helpful). There were different activities during the whole weekend, but more about it will come in your community :))

IMG_20230417_134154.jpg

I come from New England, where much of our history got its beginnings, so we have a lit of British/French heritage there. And the hurdy-gurdy! 😀

The Market goes all over ghe world, so all parts of Spain are a wonderful cultural experience! Wherever you go, whatever you do!!

Thank you! ❤️ It is always interesting!! Have a wonderful week ahead!

You do have a thing with time-travelling, don't you?

If I am not mistaken, the first post of yours that I ever read, was about a walk that you saw a clock on the street displaying the wrong time and you made up an hilarious time-travelling story :)

Maybe a tv show like Voyagers left its mark on your younger self?

You do have a thing with time-travelling, don't you?

Hahaha, seems that I DO 🤣🤣🤣

Gosh, you remember my travel from the future hahaha when the clock on the promenade showed the date from the future!!! Oh, and it was the first post you read from me? oops... you must have had some thoughts about that hive piano user lol 😂

I didn't watch that TV show, but I watched the movie Back to the Future when I was a kid. Maybe the idea stayed somewhere in my mind 😀

Mr Hurdy Gurdy is one of the happiest men I have ever seen!! I had to smile just looking at him.

Definitely!
His smile and expression are something I also spotted immediately, and it was a very good feeling to be in his presence. Some other hivers noticed his charisma too.

It is true that you have traveled in time, the evidence is the face and expressions of that man (there are two people in it, a young man and an old man, as you could observe)

...
Seeing him, I was impressed, and his image keeps coming to my mind. And what is behind it (the spinning wheel, la rueca o hilar, en español)... where were you, in a fairy tale? The girl pricked her finger there, she became the sleeping beauty and the medieval musician was the valiant prince with his zanfoña playing for her, to wake her up. For a moment, I thought of your previous post (the frog). Maybe that frog in the previous post was just asleep too, in the trance of becoming this prince, that girl maybe kissed the frog there, and as she was one of those hallucinogenic ones, the girl fell here, on the spinning wheel... and the music of the hurdy-gurdy (me gusta más zanfoña).... ¿o será al revés? It's confusing. This post needed at its end that of don't worry, (be) confused. hahaha...
...

(ya llegué con mis locuras, lo sé 😆 Un abrazo mipiano, muy bonito viaje al pasado nos regalaste)

  • (you know + version 2)

Ow, this is a cool addition to the story. Yeah, the spinning wheel was there, could be true that someone fell asleep (hahaha, let's bring over here the Sleeping Buddha too 😂)
Now when you say, and after reading your story comment, this post definitely needed the don't worry, be confused footer. 😂😂 But, it would need an edit then {tienes hives?} - solo broma!!! No lo voy a editar 😋

😂 ay...

No sé. Jajaja...

alarma + hijo = mamá taxi

creo que luego volveré a dormir una ziezzzzzta de mañana 😂

Buena suerte, uber-piano 😄

I was not familiar with this traditional instrument. How nice that you had the opportunity to travel back in time, see and learn about instruments and rhythms with an ancient tradition and rich culture.

Through your post I enjoyed the trip too.

Thank you, Rosana, I am glad you also saw now this instrument as it's a cool one 😉

wow wow that has been a great and fun trip back in time. Note that I watched the video before reading the post and the sound caught my attention while I was reading what was in the video. I thought for a moment that it was some kind of electronic instrument and it was this gentleman with the silver beard giving this instrument a lot of revolutions 🎷, I noticed that lowering the revolutions changes the sound.

It's the first time I've seen an instrument like this and I've been fascinated. very good post. I'm curious about the location. It's very nice and if you add the smell of bread 🍞😍.

great post ✨.

Hey @franciscodesousa

How cool that you took this ride to the past with us. And that it was fun heheh. Yeah, there were stalls preparing food, and also baking bread, en horno de leña 🤤

The instrument, very interesting sound, right? And it was so nicely explained by that man, how it works, the parts of the instrument and the demonstration 🎶🎶🎶
The location is a small town no so far away from the place where I live ;)
It was a traditional market that was held this weekend.

Thank you for your visit and a very nice comment. May you have a great week 😇

So cool! A wheel fiddle. Who knew ??

I would love to go back to a simpler time like that. I'm thinking this is Spain?? Looks very nice. Seen a palm tree :)

Yes, some palm trees are there... I see that you have a good eye (not just a black one) and the antenna received the signals from Spain 😁

😂😂😂

Ah! Sweet! haha
Thanks for having a listen :)
You are now an antenna :)

Haha, I am an antenna 😂
You are welcome, we listened to it already many times haha and to Dr Rex too 😁

haha.. Thanks a lot..
Well, I'm getting getting ready to do another one but I have 2 other guys involved this time. Plus I'm learning how to do a few things with a video program to make them better.
Maybe around Junish :)

Maybe you have heard of the Stress Cones to then. That's another label I started with Billy Korg. He's the Spanish Stress Cone. He lives on the coast over there. I'm the Canadian. Eventually I'll pop by for a visit :)
Once the World gets a little more sane

What a fantastic instrument, I've never seen it before, and it sounds phenomenal!

I loved your time travel!

I ask you a question, is this community only about music? Or what inspires an instrument? Too bad I don't know how to play any of them....

I love the publication, it's magical!

It was a very nice surprise for us too, to see and hear his musical instrument, zanfoña. Didn't expect it at all, we went just for a traditional market in that little town.

Time travel - glad you enjoyed it too. ;)

About the community. Well, you don't have to play any instrument at all. This is a writing corner around music and everything connected to it. Let's say... you visited a concert or an event and you want to share it with us. Great, write down your thoughts, experience or what you felt while being there... how it was, was it funny, serious, some details, anecdote... Or you have a song you like, and you could write about it with your own words, you give a personal touch to it - that's also cool. A story, something that happened to you and has a connection with music, or a musical instrument, a musician. Can be real, dream, or fiction, up to you. We have had several writing challenges already, and they don't have deadlines. If you want you can check them out, there is a pinned post in this community, and in the last paragraph, there are links to these few writing initiatives we have done in the past (and present). Hope I helped a bit to get the idea behind this little corner 😌

Thank you @avdesing I hope you will have a nice and successful week 😇

I love music in general and orchestral and epic music much more, it's an excellent idea, I was reading it and it fascinated me. On the other hand I love writing.

I'm sure I'll come up with something.

Thank you very much for your answer, it absolutely cleared up my doubts.

That's one of the coolest instruments I've even seen. I knew about it because I did my deep dive into luthierie. It's part violin, part piano, part machine and lot more things. Talk about multitasking while playing. That must be a tough one to play.

The other guys were having a blast with their performance. We call those kind of groups retretas and they consist of percussion instruments and wind instruments just like that one. I guess that were they come from. Really nice ticket to the past. I came back to drop this comment. 👀😃

This is indeed a fusion of a few instruments, as you say piano, violin, he also mentioned the guitar while explaining, a machine... Yes, like a machine. Although there are keys, so maybe it would be familiar to my fingers I didn't even ask to try to play it hahaha, I was afraid I would brake it or something. 😂

Thanks for letting me know about the name of the group of musicians that you have there, I checked now it. Haha, good you could come back and write this comment, 😂 this was funny!!

I am grateful for your presence here 🙌 {hope that after making the promised piano 😜 you can try to build a hurdy-gurdy too :D}

Building something like that is like making a machine. Maybe I'll try after I've learned more about other instruments. I think the hurdy-gurdy is the ancestor or accordions and other mechanical instruments. Maybe even the piano is one of its offsprings.

There are many mechanisms involved in it's functioning. I would've picked it up and had look at all the moving parts, but I wouldn't have tried to play it. For the same reason, something might break and it wouldn't be fun.

Wow the first was really cool instrument I haven't seen it before, un sonido muy bonito, and the others musicians are like a party jajajajaja especially the last one he is like the hombre orquesta!!! I loved it!

Haha, I know, una locura, the group of musicians 😂

I suppose they also have fun while marching and playing. And yes, the last one, with the percussions is like a one-man band. 👌 Well spotted @pumarte :))

I have heard this instrument from metal bands like Eluviette, and it was the first time I heard about this musical instrument and I really love that sound mixed with the sound of the metal genre. Greetings !

!discovery 40

Eluveitie - so it's a folk metal band, as I read right now about it, and listen to one video about the history of this band ;)
Thanks for your comment, the info and the support, @wilfredocav 😇🎶

What a cool instrument and this sound is something completely new that my ears hear!😊 It sounds very lively and sets off a cheerful mood. And the man who plays is very charismatic and positive. 😊

The man was indeed positive and charismatic, that is the most important thing I think with him. Not even that he played this interesting instrument and how kindly he explained everything but the vibe he was sharing 😇

Damn, is THAT what a hurdy gurdy is? Never too old to learn !! And that drummer... what a weird way to play... he gets first prize for creativity.

I really enjoyed this post !!

We are never too old to learn, indeed.
But is we talk about age, I see I have another comment too to respond to hahaha

While you were still a twinkle in your mom's eye ... I was listening to and loving this track {smile}

While you were still a twinkle in your mom's eye ... I was listening to and loving this track {smile}

Hahahaha

1968?

I was still far from being that twinkle in my mom's eye 😂

Thanks for the music 😇🎶

My pleasure {smile}

!PIZZA

Thank you 🙂 🍕

Never seen those musical instruments as well. It's beautiful to see they're still using those things. 😍 And learn from them.

This happened at a traditional market- I suppose these are organized with that purpose, to persevere some traditions and teach the younger generation about the way of life in the past. I loved the idea and the activities and the instrument was a really nice bonus to see 😇

Wow! I had no idea that an instrument like the one you show could exist. However, it's not a big surprise either. The world is tremendously wide, and in it, there is a lot of creation. Music itself is diverse, amplified and correlated with inventiveness. What a great journey you've taken, especially if it has such a musical background, dear @mipiano.

Seems that we had to go back in time to see this instrument... it's a cool one, and yes, the world is full of creations and great things, we just have to see them. Or hear ;)
