Hello everyone, dear Hivers. How are you today ? The day has just begun here and, like every morning in the countryside, even though I'm physically exhausted at times, I always end up waking up before my alarm.
But I feel I could go off on a morning digression, so I'm going to refocus on the theme of this article : Hunters and gatherers ! Well, in my case, it's mainly gatherers... I doubt that hunting will come soon, or else there'll have to be a famine.

No, what I didn't talk about very much in my recent article on chestnuts was the aspect of wild gathering, that harvest of fruit or plants that you didn't grow intentionally.
Because this dream come true is perhaps on the same step of the podium as that of creating a garden, and in fact works in parallel. Getting some of your food from the wild is free in monetary and financial terms, but it does require effort, time and the necessary learning.
Although I've lived in the city for the last 15 years of my life, I've used that time to learn and read up on the subject. So I'm a pretty good theoretician, but I'm inevitably lacking in practice !
Here, an elevated lepiota, Macrolepiota procera, an edible mushroom that can be recognized by its size, its fibrous stalk and the double ring that slides over it...
And here it is again a few days late r! Apparently, they taste better and are easier to digest when the cap is not too open, so I didn't wait any longer... Cooked with a shallot, a little garlic and in a mixture of olive oil and butter, it was a real delight !
But you don't necessarily have to go very far to pick apples in the wild... Our neighbour's orchard is bursting at the seams with apples, and none of his trees seem to have been picked.

Without missing a beat, I went and filled a small colander with them. This will make an excellent compote, but they're also very good to eat like this. Slightly acidic, but I like a bit of character...
Don't worry, it's a neighbour I know and I didn't get shot !

Bonjour à tous, chers Hivers. Comment allez vous aujourd'hui ? Ici la journée ne fait que commencer et comme tous les matins à la campagne, quand bien même je suis épuisé physiquement par moment, je finis toujours par me réveiller avant mon alarme.
Mais je sens que je pourrais partir dans une digression matinale et je vais d'office recentrer mon discours sur le thème de cet article : Les chasseurs-cueilleurs ! Enfin dans mon cas, ce sera surtout cueilleur... Je doute que la chasse vienne tout de suite, ou alors il faudra qu'il y ai une famine.

Non, ce dont je n'avais que très peu parlé dans mon récent article sur les châtaignes, c'est l'aspect de la cueillette sauvage, cette récolte de fruits ou plantes que l'on à pas fait pousser intentionnellement.
Car ce rêve qui se réalise est peut-être sur la même marche du podium que celui de faire un jardin et fonctionne d'ailleurs en parallèle. Aller chercher une part de sa nourriture en pleine nature ! Gratuitement au niveau monétaire et financier, mais cela n'est pas dénué d'efforts, de temps et de nécessaires apprentissages.
Bien que vivant en ville les 15 dernières années de ma vie, j'ai utilisé ce temps pour apprendre et me renseigner sur le sujet. Je suis donc un assez bon théoricien, mais il me manque forcément la pratique !
Ici, une lépiote élevée, Macrolepiota procera, un champignon qui est comestible et qui est reconnaissable par sa taille, son pied fibreux et son double anneau qui coulisse sur ce dernier...
Et le revoici quelques jours plus tard ! Apparemment, ils sont meilleurs en goût et plus digestes lorsque le chapeau n'est pas trop ouvert, alors je n'ai pas plus attendu... Cuisiné avec une échalote, un peu d'ail et dans un mélange d'huile d'olive et de beurre, c'était un vrai délice !
Mais pour faire de la cueillette sauvage, on à pas besoin d'aller forcément très loin... Le verger de notre voisin croule sous les pommes et aucun de ses pommiers ne semblent avoir été ramassés.
Voyez plutôt. Toutes ces belles pommes qui nous attendent..!
Ni une ni deux, je suis allez en remplir une petite passoire. Cela fera une excellente compote, mais elles sont aussi très bonnes à manger comme cela. Légèrement acides, mais j'aime un peu de caractère..
Rassurez-vous de nouveau, c'est un voisin que je connais et je n'ai pas pris de coup de fusil !

Nice catch! I ate that parasol zwam ( as we call it in Dutch ) several times, in the last 5 year or so, here in Portugal. In fact, it's the only edible mushroom that I can identify haha! The first time I had eaten it, I got a little bit of a scare, as - after sharing in the natural medicine discor - someone told me that it might have been an extremely poisonous one and that I might need to go to a hospital to get my stomach pumped.
I felt okay, decided to sleep on it. The color of the photo had confused the guy. Also, some old ladies in the hamlet where I lived, back then, had identified it for me/ double checked, so I trusted them on that.

Hahaha ! I had the same thoughts, and what's more, several of my reference experts in terms of mushrooms hadn't replied... and then I ended up simply eating my parasol zwam (beautiful name btw !) with a little garlic and butter :)
I know from speaking with my brother that colors of the photographies can often be quite confusing, but in the end, as you and every people interested in mushrooms, no risk is allowed !

I like the first paragraph - evidence that the mushroooms were edible. They must have tasted delicious with shallots and garlic. The photos are so beautiful - mushrooms are so elegant.
The apple tree is so laden - I wish I could walk around to my friendly neighbour and pick apples. Must be great living in the country. Everywhere has it pros and cons but with such a life and such views - it seems like the pros out weigh the cons.

I've not been here much since you moved into the country but I'm so glad to see all the wonderful benefits you seem to enjoy. It's really beautiful seeing all those edible mushrooms. They must be a delight to the taste buds and those apples. Where are you hiding friendly neighbour?
Oh, I was so scared you were gonna get shot for apples, man. They look delicious. We have some nice apples too. It doesn't cost money to get something to eat from nature, but there are definitely things you have to learn. Otherwise one wrong herb or one wrong mushroom will teach you badly 🤣
Thanks for a fascinating article. I wish I knew more about which wild mushrooms are safe to eat. Where I live it is not legal to forage for pieces of loose wood in the woods nearby. Its like nothing has changed since the Middle Ages when peasants had restrictions put on them by their feudal overlords about what they could and couldn't take from the woods and forests.

I've always found mushrooms so fascinating but never managed to understand which are toxic and which are safe to be consumed. In the end, I heard that it's pretty hard to find some that are really safe to be eaten because even if they are not toxic, they might get poisoned due to the others surrounding them. So I think the easiest and safest way is to have some in your own garden, lol
Yeah, I'm currently searching for good methods to cultivate those !

I love apples too but they don't grow here
Since apple is quite expensive at my end and I never get to see an apple tree that often makes me feel this apples are been wasted and I wish I was there right now🫣 maybe I would have used them for smoothies or something.

Mushrooms generally reproduce with their spores, but they also have a kind of system that connects them to each other and to other species in the area - the mycelium !
Yeah, I know it can looks as a complete waste, but afterward, the apples will decompose and the nutriments will go back to the tree for the next season, but yeah ! there's a lot !!
Seeing mushroom, I said wow and knowing its edible, I am amaze because the edible mushroom here in our place has different looks.
I said more wow when I saw an apple tree. I haven't seen an apple tree in person yet.
And oh, there's a lot of apple fruit on the ground while here it is too pricey. We can buy one medium apple at $0.5 each.

Maybe you'll find a good book on the subject of mushrooms, the specific ones of your region of living, that would be the best to surely recognize the edible ones !
