I hiked for a few hours today and enjoyed it as usual. It's been cool lately, autumn has taken hold and leaves are falling all over the place. Australia has very few native deciduous tree species though and most are in the sub-tropical and tropical regions in the north of the country; plants like the red and white cedars and the boab. This means there's generally always something green to look at and I'm glad of it.
The track was lined with lush green native trees and bushes in bloom and it all looked rather nice. I decided to grab a few sprigs here and there and see if I could get a decent photo or two and this post is the result. Pictured are a Red Flowering Gum (Corymbia ficifolia) and an Acacia (Acacia pycnantha).
I really like these next two as they show how the little gum nut grows into the flower it will eventually be. You can see how the flower pushes outwards to eventually split the top off the nut in the first image. The top of the nut stays on like a little hat and then eventually falls off.
The second image shows the flower after the top of the nut has fallen off completely. The flower, still folded away inside the half-nut, will push out some more and eventually bloom as in the top two images. I think it's pretty cool.
I've tried to show the blooming process of the Acacia flowers below although it's not quite as dramatic, or as easily shown. Those little yellow flowers are very small and are hard to shoot. There's an image of how the flower bud forms and how it then opens up though, quite differently, to the Flowering Red Gum.
It forms little roundish bundles on the flower-head and then each opens up as you can see in the very last image below.
Taking these shots added a nice element to my hike today, bringing them home and shooting them, as if a hike needs anything to make it more awesome than it already is. Thanks for taking a look and if you have any comments you know how to do so, and where.

I wish I had your talent for catchy titles!
Lovely shots. I also wish I had your talent for shooting native flora. I like the one where the nut has just fallen off too - I could live with that one on a wall in my house, the composition is really cool.
The title came to me whilst I was hiking, there's often a lot of time to think when one is trudging along.
The shots came out ok on this shoot, the subjects have interest though, and that makes it easier. I think my favourite one is the same one you mention; somehow I got the composition right...Luck probably.
Thanks for your nice comments, they are appreciated.
And yet, it did.
I like how the gum trees' florals have no petals and are so very distinct. The way you photographed them shows off each individual stamen, fluffy and seemingly appearing wild and free. In fact, they are, aren't they? I find it cool that they have a cap, which they pop off, just in time to make a nice show.
Well done, Mother Nature. She really does it best.
Your mad skilz are always showing off. :) A pot of a different flower. You are unique - no doubt about it. Gorgeous Gum.
It's a pretty cool looking flower right? Also, how it breaks out of that little gum nut is awesome. To be honest, I've never looked at one so close, taken it for granted I guess, but seeing that but split apart, the way the flower is all packed in there, is kind of cool. Macro photography is great huh? Oh, mother nature too.
I'm pretty happy with these shots. Mother nature and my camera combine to put on a decent show.
You always find a way to come up with the best post titles.
Those are definitely some pretty neat looking flowers. It's nice to have a place you can go to that has such beauty in it and can be appreciated. It's good for the body and soul.
Lol...I'm waiting for some dick head to call me out for it, you know, how racist. Idiots.
I had a really great hike today and a moment of brilliance when I came up with the idea of tearing a few sprigs off some trees to take home and shoot. Those poor sprigs gave their lives for the creation of this post. I'm a tree destroyer it seems. Maybe I'm to blame for global warming! I better watch out, Greta Thunderberg will be screaming at me next.
Hahahaha! I was actually going to joke that you had gone into the woods for a walk and started to murder flowers, too. All in the name of art!
Art sometimes involves murder. Hmm...maybe that's not at all the case. Oh well, let's just roll with it.
I love how a lot of the native flowers just kind of bouf XD
The trees aren't all that interesting usually but when their flowers bouf they have a lot of appeal, especially when grouped together. They should bouf more often.
It sounds like you had a wonderful time and it was a beauty to see. I am hoping that by mid-summer I will be in a position to where I can do a couple of short hikes in the local state park with my youngest son.
Hiking is something that I need to do; get away from the every day grind, find some space away from other people and closer to nature. I'm lucky to have a conservation park about 50 metres from my front door so often I'm there, although I'm happy to travel around to some of the many forests and national parks around the place. I hope you get to go too.
What's those comments on a couple your posts all about? (Machine-generated comments.)
That is real convenient having a park that close. Our closest nature park is about 5 miles away.
I used ChatGPT to assist with writing some of my posts because of my cognitice challenges. It is embarrasing, so I am not going to say anything to them, just going to accept it. That said, I did not use it to write the entire post, just to help me along some. My understanding is I am most likely going to be blacklisted and shunned so I guess my journey and therapy here is coming to an end.
I have enjoyed getting to know you and following your posts.
It's certainly convenient and comes with all the cool stuff like kangaroos, koalas and kookaburras...It's nice coming across one of them now and then, and hearting kookaburras calling at dawn and dusk is very cool.
On the other thing, yeah it's not well regarded here and there's little flexibility with it. I'll be honest and say I don't like AI at all, although there's certainly a use-case in certain circumstances. I'm not sure how HW works, but if you put a disclaimer at the bottom of your posts to call out that you've used AI it may help. I'm not really sure though.
Maybe give it a try, like a one line thing. Something like: ChatGPT has been used to assist in writing some of this post due to cognitive challenges.
I'm not sure that will help but it's worth a try. The issue is people earning off work they have not done themselves.
Yeah I’ll figure something out. Heading out on a trip for a week to see my oldest son. Take cleared and maybe we’ll chat when get back or if I’m able to grab a minute while there
Ok mate, I'm sure there's a solution. Have a good trip, put this behind you for a while and enjoy the time with your family.
Some of the close ups feel so alien, when there is nothing more earthy
and beautiful, and I felt the sentiment about AI for the time being, glad to see human work
Macro has that effect right? It takes something and allows us to observe it differently which I find appealing.
And yeah, I'm not a fan of AI.
(Sorry for the late reply, this comment slipped through the net.)
Indeed, a microcosmos. Our perception is indeed reliant on scale
Pink is my favourite colour, that's why the first pictures caught my attention, especially the second one and then the sixth one, I love it. Well, it is very difficult to choose when there is art.
I love them!!!!
Thank you for so much beauty @galenkp!✨
I'd imagine that you may never have seen flowers like this, not in read life anyway, as the tree is endemic to Australia. They look pretty good when totally covered with flowers. Anyway, thanks for commenting, I'm glad you liked the shots.
No, I have not seen them, if similar, there are acacias in Argentina but only that one.
Nature is all beautiful. Thank you!
Hi galenkp
Great shots that never let you down. I see how beautiful the texture of each beautiful flower is, especially the pink hue.
In my country they are very similar to the water guava flower, I believe this is one of a kind. And maybe in your country it is called by a different name.
It's an interesting flower isn't it? I find it incredible how nature creates all these things and we generally go about our day mostly oblivious to them. It's good to stop and take a closer look now and then right?
You are right, I really like the beautiful floral details. Thank you for giving your best work here, friend.
You took very beautiful and high quality photos as always.
I want to tell you something interesting that I remembered when I saw the pink flowers.
Here in Venezuela there is a fruit that its name in Spanish is Pomalaca, but I was investigating and in English it is called Malay apple, I remembered this fruit because its flower is the same as the one you show in the first photos.
A bulb that releases many pink hairs. Something very curious is that when these trees are flowering they always create a pink carpet on the ground.
Oh yeah, the ground gets covered with the little thin flower petals as you say. I'm not sure it's the same type of tree you mention but it certainly sounds very similar.
What a beauty Galen that nature that embraces you in your beloved country; in my maternal house there were many red cedars, pink Apamates, and Acacia, especially with its flower my brothers and I played with the pistils as if they were swords against each other until we took the counteroffensive from the other and that one won.
Every day I try to look for the flowering of the Curaries for this time of the surrounding year, with its signs and symbols that remind me that it is there for me.
Have a nice evening, my dear friend.❤️🤗
It was a nice hike and I enjoyed afterwards getting these photos taken. I'd hoped a few turned out well and was happy to see there was some I was comfortable sharing in the Photography Lovers community.
The Red Flowering Gum isn't a particularly great looking tree, rather boring in fact, but when they're blooming the contrast of red and green is pretty striking.
I hope you have a good day, I'm just doing some reading and tea drinking tonight; nice and quiet, and relaxing.
Night ... night Galen
Acacia are in bloom over there??? I love our natives. Very photogenic indeed. Nice snaps!
Yep, picked those in the photo today on my hike.
Oh wow! What exquisite looking flowers!! They look like something out of a fairytale! Beautiful photographs!
The tree gets credit for the flowers and the camera gets credit for the photographs.
The only two I complimented to begin with.
LOLZ! I am kidding! 😁
