Seven Oaks Lavender Farm is a small family-owned and operated lavender farm in Catlett, Virginia. It is not far from Washington, DC... so close, yet so very far apart. It is only June, yet, it was rumored that the lavender fields were in bloom, if only in the first stages, their buds flowering, rubbing together, and permeating the summer air with the intoxicating smell. Oh, beauty! Is there any better way to spend a warm, summer day? To be honest, it is the unofficial start of summer, with the Memorial Day weekend having just passed. Officially it begins on June 21, the date of the Summer Solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
It seems even the grass wasn't tamed yet, nor weed-whacked or mowed. I am not sure that spring was quite finished, but, lavender waits for no one.

On May 14th of this year, Mother's Day was celebrated in over 40 countries. It is a day of honoring the mother of the family. I happen to be in that club. One of my girls, the youngest, in fact, purchased a season pass (another one!) for $25.00, but, this time it is for the Lavender Fields. Hence, it is nicknamed The Purple Pass. The pass allows you unlimited visits for the season. Each time you come, you may bring a guest, and, you and each get 20 free stems. I have gotten a nice supply of them so far. Last year, I dried a lot of lavender. Right now, I am picking the English lavender, the culinary one. The uses are endless! In the photo below, it is the French Lavender that is in front of the orange flowers.

This is the owner, giving us a quick how-to on how to select the lavender and how to cut it properly so it continues to produce nicely. Thank you! I learned a lot of small things I never knew I needed to know about lavender! It was fun!
This farm is all about the lavender, but, they also grow many other flowers that have medicinal/culinary uses. I am not that experienced in it, but, I got to learn a little bit. Maybe a little bit more than that. They offer up lavender cupcakes, lavender lemonade...the list goes on and on.
This is the store on the property. Oh, yes! Everything lavender! Essential oils. Truth. French Lavender is the one they use for the essential oils. It is starting to bloom. I am ready for it. The family makes most of what is in the shop, and friends and neighbors help out. It takes a village, yes? The first time you come (if you have a pass) you check in here and after that, they pretty much remember you.
Tea cake mix, jam, essential oil, lavender oil, things you never imagined. It is a small shop, but, it has a massive amount of merchandise. Best part? Nobody bothers you while you are shopping, but, will be happy to give you information or answer your questions. It's lovely.
There were samples of tea and I have to admit, I love the Lavender Chai tea...cinnamon, cloves, peppercorns, and a delicate touch of lavender. It is the nuance of it that makes it taste so special.
They had many good books on using lavender and the many ways to take advantage of its properties. You walk around in a peaceful stupor, Kidding, of course, but, I can feel the calming effects of being surrounded by all that lavender.
It is always good to get out and do a few things, do things you have never done, or go back and redo what you have done. I learned a lot today about lavender and other medicinal flowers. Who knew? Not me. I am always learning and today is no different.

It really has been nice to have these passes being given to me by the kids. The bonus of getting free stems with each visit has been great! Blues and purples are my favorite! Blue in nature is still unusual.

Lavender is a great reason to write in #MarketFriday. It seems everyone loves lavender, it's become a trend, especially photos in the lavender field. Romantic girls, too bad we can't take scented photos yet... but they can be scented afterward if done on paper.
I was surprised by your choice, you are surprising with each new post, very nice! The membership that allows you to walk in those gardens, past the rows of blooming lavender, makes all the money and I'm glad you know how to appreciate what you get. A pleasure to read your lavender story and the photos are even more so.
In Romania lavender growing has only recently been introduced, so I have the opportunity quite rarely to come across such a farm. I mean with one like you showed here, I have no chance, because I don't think it exists, so your post allowed me to see that it may exist... somewhere else.

Lavender is the new it scent, perhaps it has always been, but, seems much more prevalent now. It is all about the Lavender! The amazing field in France, I remember them so well. It is those I dream about, not here. It has much time to become all grown up. :) Still, it has all the makings of a beautiful field. And it definitely has the scent that we all look for. I actually enjoy going to the smaller farms, they are usually run by whole families and I like watching how seamlessly they work together. The farms like these have been around for quite a few years, along with the fruit orchards where you go and pick your own. The first one I ever went to, I laughed, thinking how we are paying them to work. :) But, the upside is that you get the fruits that you want, so it really all works out.
This particular Lavender Farm got a hard hit during Covid and is just now getting back on its feet. In a few years, their lavender will be huge, but in the meantime, we love it anyway.
I truly understand the lack of inspiration. :) But, I continue. You can take a break from it. :) Lucky you!!

The scent is always subtle and very calming. I have sachets all over the house, especially in the bedroom. It feels peaceful to me. Harvest season is from early June to mid-July. So they open up late May to early June. It is going to be peak season probably next week. I would say the best of the season is six weeks long. Europe, specifically France, is behind us and usually theirs starts in July, just when ours is finished. They are much cooler there.
Of course, @dswigle. The translator is "my friend"... You wrote very correctly in Romanian!
This post went to my heart because I too am an admirer of this plant and am impressed by its beauty, especially in the fields of France. I have a few bushes myself but they don't really like it in my yard, unfortunately.
I only have it in my bedroom, next to my pillow. It helps me fall asleep faster and more pleasantly!

Yes, @dswigle, I fall asleep dreaming of a field full of lavender... I'd like that but it doesn't happen very often. Anyway, the scent of lavender is very pleasant and relaxing. It reminds me of the flowers my grandmother used to put in my bedroom, it was called "sulfine" (Melilotus officinalis), I don't know if I'll find a translation...
Oh I love this post SO much. I love lavender for starters, but oh a farm dedicated to these amazing flowers?? How incredible is that? Your pictures are stunning. It makes me want to dance, or cry, just seeing all the incredible colors and knowing how many bees and butterflies this lovely place must support. It’s just breathtaking.
My favorite lavender plant is at the end of its life. I have encouraged it for years, though it is past its prime. This week, like the owner of an aging dog who gets a puppy to help keep it young, I planted some new lavender seeds around it. Now it will have some little friends!

Virginia has 9 major Lavender Farms and the one I am going to is a small, family-owned little garden that started outside Grandma's kitchen door. The bees are not as abundant as the butterflies! That surprised me, but I bet those numbers will be flip-flopped this week.

My kids love getting me passes for the farms. I do love them and it is always a great time.
There is some truth to the size of things, however, I live in the Washington, DC metro area and this is on the outskirts. So big is not unusual when you are feeding this population. But, many things are bigger for that reason. Organized because they have a lot of rules that they have to contend with and it is easier to keep it run well and organized... it just keeps the cogs running smoother.
You are a farmer, but, you do it because you are one with the earth, you are born into it and you are passionate about it. I have to say that is a definite win on your side. The thing I loved about Europe was the simplicity, the personal touches and families handing down businesses, farmers carrying on ...
Never be embarrassed about that, not ever. I can honestly say that many look up to you and how you live your life. You are to be envied. I can see the passion in your words. I can feel it. Never change.

Lavender is timeless. I love it for so many reasons. Of course, you know how much I adore herbs both for purpose in healing or cuisine as well as beauty and scent. Did I ever tell you about my own Lavender Fields? A very unique African spa that I took my mother to for her 60th. It is called Indigo Fields. And as I'm typing I think I should dig in my archives and possibly make you a post
Lavender does have some wonderful healing properties, doesn't it? It has such a claiming effect on me.

This is an awesome visit you had ! The little shop made me super curious about the lavender tea, I never tried some and I guess that I would love it :) The place is really beautiful and as I come from the south of France, lavender fields are in my heart forever, as you said ^^
We must be quite connected as two days ago, we also had a lavender experience with an old guy selling the plants that he grows near Paris, we bought him three of those lavender-filled balls. Since then it's been fragrant all over the house and it's truly divine !

Wow!!!! I would also like to visit this farm. I love lavender and know a lot about it. it would be great to taste their lavender tea and jam. I never ate or drank it. I think the owners of this farm are very calm people, since lavender works great for calming, relieving stress and relaxation. great to have been there!

That would be so much fun for you! I never had lavender tea until last year. Then I had lavender lemonade, cookies, and a cupcake that they were serving on the opening day. Well, I didn't have the cookies or cake, but, my daughter did. :)

Awesome! This is a very calming (and colorful) post! Well done to your daughter for treating you with such a great gift. This is really a practical gift that serves a great purpose over an extended period of time!
We always had Lavender plants in the garden in the garden of the previous house we lived in. We loved having them below the windows to get the calming effect of the lavender entering the house through the windows.
We haven't planted any Lavender where we are now...maybe it's time to do something about that!

I have used up all the garden space there is here!~ I do love to use all that I have. Yes, your post served as a great reminder that we don't have Lavender here. Since we moved in here, we just maintained the garden here. We have put in some Spekboom though, but now Lavender is next on the list!

It is getting hotter and hotter here in London. But still not as hot as the Philippines 😆. All is well at work but could be a bit boring at times. Kids are doing ok back at home. I need to show you a photo and I'll just dm it to you.

I've actually never heard of businesses like this before where you get a season pass and you pick your flowers, but you seem to have a lot of them around you. Okay, I have been to a blueberry farm before, does that really count? I play Hay Day on my phone and I grow some of my own lavender, does that count?
That place just looks really peaceful, plus when you add in the calming effects of lavender, it's probably almost like heaven!

There are many farms on the outskirts of the DC Metro area. The smaller farms do well with this as people will pay the small fee and it saves them from having to harvest and sell their plants. They have 9 big lavender farms here in Virginia and countless smaller ones.
The U-pick fruit places are much the same. They could see to the grocery markets, but, the way they do it is much better. Plus fresh!
I am sure Hay Day doesn't count. LOL
It is truly peaceful and lovely to walk through. I have been thee 6 times already so I have lots of lavender. I have to say that it is only 15 cents a stem to buy, so you could get an armload all in one trip and make your sachets.

Oh wow, that is relatively cheap! I can see how places like this might do really well outside the bigger cities. We don't have many of those near where I live. Big Cities that is. Detroit is probably the closest. The other ones are just small enough that they still have a kind of rural feel to them.
You have been to Washington, DC. I don't think it is a major *feeling) the city for all that it has there. Perhaps it is the lack of skyscrapers due to the restrictions on height.
The height of buildings in Washington is limited by the Height of Buildings Act.
I was a little kid so I really don't remember. That makes sense about the buildings being lower.
Haha! I am pretty sure neither one of us was born. :) But, I read about it and remember them pointing that out here when I first moved here. They didn't want all the buildings to overshadow the important ones.

Okay, to be honest, I went to five stores to do returns on items I bought and didn't like when I got them home. I finally accumulated enough to say BASTA! Enough! Then post office, UPS, 5 stores for returns, and the farmers market. Then the Lavender Farm, just long enough to get 20 stems. Called my sister, brother, niece... and made dinner. I am exhausted and I had a fun day,

Yesterday was a rainy day here, so I thought. Let’s move around some boxes 📦
This house I am in is wayyy to small. So I have no space and lots of boxes still in every room except the living room. So I unpacked all boxes with clothes yesterday and spread them out over… yep you can guess it. 3 wayyyy to small clothes cabinets in 2,5 bedroom. Luckily I have one of those hanging racks. So build that one up and have only 1 box of clothes left to unpack.
Everything else… our other belongings, including my art materials, will have to stay in boxes. So will stack them up along walls in the bedrooms (2,5 bed room, we were meant to move into a 5 bed hahaha)
So I am happy with the progress… and I am resting too, so it all takes a bit longer this time (the settling in), to heal my back and other aches. 😊
Once hubby is back and finds a job we will look for a cottage to buy, so I know this is temporary and I will make the best out of it. Will tell the rental story shortly 🤓
So wonderful to hear, you switched off from all things computer and did relax a bit. Finally some chores that needed to be done. Returning items… good. Must have felt good. Here we only have a certain amount of days to return.
It sounds indeed like a fun day filled with nice things… hehehe 🤭 that’s a lot you covered.

I was sleeping indeed. Finally… my body is also still exhausted. Here the sun comes up at the moment at 5:04am and wakes me every morning. So yesterday I put up another layer of curtains over the landlords curtains in the hope it is a bit darker. It helped… a bit. Woke at 7:44 but fell asleep again…
I woke up at 10:30 😳 this morning haha 😆 unheard of. !LOL

After a tedious day at bank, shopping in mall and running around over 5k steps in all I am knackered, no photographs as this is a hot run organizing my son preparation for his travel I'm more exited than he is I think...

Off to stay with friends in New Zealand, meet family he has not seen since he was knee high. Now to find right gear to kit him out without going overboard for a five month stay, neither of us like shopping, sight for sore eyes. Trip starts on 21st June, final count down, his 1st trip out the country.
My younger son almost got going just before lockdowns hit, they are saving to try again.
With all the restrictions, this has taken some time jumping through hoops from our side of the pond.
Will write again soon, once the dust has settled and we do get to somewhere of interest. Aloe flowers now starting to bloom, next stop possibly to see their beauty around town.
Slowing down the bones remind one too often..., you ain't what you were at 40 or 50!
How fun!!! They will love it, I am sure! Sometimes, the right gear is better found there, although I think Australia is expensive. But, I find I like seeing how much I really need as I have come back home with some things I bought for the trip.
The restrictions are killing me. Some of my favorite places have been taken off the table by the crime rates and unstableness of the area. Seriously.
I know you will write once again. :) Aloe I had at my house in Texas and Florida, not so much here.

Making purchases in our own country will save a lot, converting is crippling on exchange rates anywhere for us in first world countries.
Obtaining permission is ridiculous, new ones popping up all the time, world has gone from bad to worse with rules of late.

Hopefully, he gets all the permissions he needs and escapes before they can add any more.
If they keep it up, people will be running away to a new country - somewhere where it is easier to raise a family and make a living. My heart goes out to all of you as your love for your country is being challenged by all this nonsense.
Everyone is being tested to the limit, no matter where you live it appears more difficult to do much without a barrage of questioning and security.

Seem early for the lavender to be starting to bloom but nowadays everything blooms earlier and earlier each year it seems. They will be really beautiful once they are fully bloomed. Great shots!
It did seem early when I moved back to the States after experiencing it in July there! But, that is the blooming time here. I always almost miss it because it is right before or right after Memorial Day.

Lavender is so fine, isn't it? I just found out last year that you can make tea! Seriously! So many people didn't know that! The lavender cupcakes are divine! And the lemonade is refreshing. I had it for the first time this year!
The shop is a cottage on the property, but super cool! It has everything and the people are so nice. They teach you everything you ever wanted to know - and then some. They make most of their products themselves, or have help from their relatives and Neighbors! Yes!
It takes a village!
I love the pass. I can go when I want, it is so very awesome!!! Each time, twenty stems AND I can take a guest each time who also gets 20 free ones!

I don't know. I still hope I get a chance to ride a horse somewhere once in my life time.
I'm hoping to join a team to participate in a pickleball tournament. I sort of help put one together but put myself as a reserve or may be out of the team because I am playing for a while so lacking some training.
I just Googled Horseback riding stables in Singapore and there are a lot of them!!
You will be able to ride if you are still interested! And Pickleball is fun, so I hope you get to join!
Maybe the race horse end in with a different "job" and these few get some business out of it.
I can guarantee you wouldnt want to ride a racehorse. They will give you a run you'll never forget!

Wow everything about lavender was there. From books, teas, flowers and a lot more. It so good to be there and they are having a good promotional idea that you can have free lavender along your entrance fee.
I think that must be an industry standard around here. There are many farms in the outlying areas and there are always bonus freebies with your entrance fee. I suppose it would be hard to harvest and have people in there, so it is a win-win situation.
If you read about the tulip farm I went to a couple of months ago, you also got ten stems every time you went. They lost money on me, I got my Passport there also and got flowers on my way home almost every day. The tulips in my house and the other places I left them were amazing!

Wow! This is awesome. How did I not know that lavender could be had as tea? I think I'll have to rekindle my love with teas 😍
They have lavender everything, they would not be able to escape the tea! :) Lavender is safe for tea, but not all should be consumed. I use English. Fresh or dried blossoms work. It carries a subtle floral flavor on the finish of your sip.
Quick and easy: pour 1 cup (250 ml) of water over 1/2 teaspoon of loose lavender buds letting it steep for a few minutes. I sometimes put a little honey in it!

@dswigle Being in such a distinguished place, is like spending a few days in a paradise, full of lavenders, with their exquisite aromas, I imagine that the lavender stems are taken from there, and then planted on a large scale and get the lavender perfume, I correct me if I'm wrong, seeing such beautiful gardens is as if the great essence of lavender reached my nose. I like such a distinguished publication, with such beautiful photos, in Venezuela in two places I can observe said landscapes of plantations in the Merida state and in Caripe Monagas state, but not with lavender. Lavender is a plant that also offers peace, tranquility, I have seen it in envelopes in Venezuela to prepare infusions and tea, but not in plantations.

I would like to have lavender here, because a tea is very beneficial for health, as far as I know, it is very good for stress and calms the mind, which I need so much, I only consume green tea for this, as I would like to verify how healthy it is to drink lavender tea, for now I calm my stress by doing yoga. The idea to have that lavender farm for people from busy city like Washington to escape is great. The displayed products look cute, by the way.
I would say that it is relaxing, honestly. There are many farms just outside of Washington, DC... it must seem funny to most people, but, it seems to work okay here. :) It is a nice reprieve from the everyday hustle.

This farm is so comfy and I love lavender as well, but in this country where I live they don't grow it much. What's a nice tea? I only try the basic tea without those flowers like lavender, it sounds like I should try it out now.

Cupcakes and lemonade of lavander. Hmmmmm. Never heard of it. I am curious to experience the aroma and the taste.
That's a lovely gift your daughter had for you. Each time you would visit the farm, the fragrance will soothe you freshly
You get to pick twenty stems each time, so I have been 6 times and twenty (20) each time. Plus! I get to take a friend each time I go! (who also gets 20 stems) The cupcakes and lemonade are delicious!
For the lemonade, you put together water, lemon juice, fresh lavender, and simple syrup. I serve it ice cold, It reduces stress and allows you to sleep better. I never have trouble sleeping, but people that do speak of it fondly. The cupcakes are unique and many times paired with lemon and honey.
I think that was a lovely gift from my daughter! She always has such unique ideas!

Cupcakes with lemon and Honey. Hmmmm. I am getting the feeling that lavender has some combination with lemon, hasn't it? Like the taste enhancer. I am thinking if it is just the taste or the aroma too that makes the combination.
After collecting the stems, have you planted them in your garden? How they turned out?
Lemon is a good combination, but, many other things go well too. For me, the scent calms your senses. My bedroom has sachets that I put in there and it is peaceful a lovely place. I can smell it in my house. I walk the fields of Lavender and feel stilled.
After collecting the stems, I hand them upside down and dry them for their different uses. I have some lavender plants in my garden 4 to be exact but, I don't want a lot of them taking up my space. :) I will got to the farm and support them.
I wish I may go to such fields some day ❤️
Lavender is one of my favourite smells, I keep a sacket by my bed to help me sleep. I have a pot with some but I have a special ability :( and I've lost several plants already, this is my third trial.
I actually think they are hard to grow! The Lavender Farm replaces hundreds of them every year. He said that is normal! I couldn't believe it. But, I saw lots of new plants and he said it is normal for all farms to lose some every year.

All this place is very beautiful as we all know that natural things are very beautiful to man and one gets a lot of peace by visiting such places. This market is very big. Here in Pakistan, the prices of the Friday bazaar are much lower than the normal bazaar. Is the same in the USA?
In many ways, yes. Our sale prices for the weekend (they always have special prices for the weekend ) start on Friday and usually are Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so for three days. It is the same basic thing, but, you have one day.
It is usually the best prices of the week!

I have never seen a lavender plant or flower in real life but I love the scents sold in stores. I’m sure it will smell even better directly from the plant. Thanks for showing us these beautiful flowers
