Oh, she is beautiful. I really love the charm of this city. Look how the reflection of the cobblestone streets takes possession of the city at night. They just seem to breathe new life into the old blue pavers that are characteristic of this beautiful old city. These pictures were taken before the devastation of the Hurricane Irma, a category 5 hurricane. They are still trying to fit the piece together again.
I'll be honest with you. #MarketFriday posts are easiest to find when they are posted in #MarktFriday Community. I won't lie to you. It has been a challenge to find them and they can show up in several places, making me wonder how many times I have upvoted the post! Puerto Rico. That is where some of my adventures start. Thank you for walking through #MarketFriday with me today. This day started out sunny, with a slight sea breeze, a perfect day in paradise. Some days, life is perfect… Some days, it is even better than that. I like walking the streets of Old San Juan. From the cobblestones streets to the Fort surrounding the waterfront, still standing from days gone by. Relics of another time. The streets are one open Market or so it seems. A piece of sidewalk invites a Market of sorts.
San Juan was one of the first cities established by Spanish colonizers in the "New World." The streets were paved with blue cobblestones starting in 1784. The original cobblestones were made using iron slag, the waste from smelting iron, and were used as ballast in ships that came from Europe in the 1700s.
Most of the blue cobblestones have been replaced in an effort to make streets more evenly paved, but you can still see originals on Calle Cristo.source
Such a blended culture of history it owns. Nestled along the wall of the city, the tower offers a brilliant view as the sun dips low on the horizon, natural canvas with breathtaking interplays of color. The old Fort surrounds the city, protecting her.
She was so beautiful, with her blended cultures and historical buildings. The towers have the most incredible views.
The cobblestone path leads you to a variety of interesting sights on the waterfront. The walls that once protected the city only adds to the romantic walk along the San Juan Bay. A museum of landmarks surrounds the city. Oh, beauty!
I have been to so many new places lately! I love to share and be shared with! I have always and forever liked to see different fruits and vegetables or products that are being sold. Perhaps I cannot get them here. So, yes! I would love to see yours! Don't forget to take photos wherever you happen to be shopping - whether it be the grocery store, the local marketplace or even an art gallery. Wherever money is exchanged for a service or for merchandise. Be different if you wish! It does not have to be a traditional market! We will love it! Don't forget to use the hashtag #MarketFriday and @dswigle.
A stroll through any one of their ally's is a memorable experience. Old San Juan is vibrant and a busy area with foot traffic in the city. The cobblestone streets remind you of the important history of the area.
Weaving through the sea of umbrellas, there is food, fun and sometimes an animal or three. It is always a surprise what will be on the vendor's table. There were not specialty Markets, but rather, the everyday kind.
There were umbrellas and tables every place you walked in Old San Juan. In the parks, on the streets, on the sides of the roads. Nothing and nowhere was sacred. Put out your merchandise and people will buy. I'm serious. Especially if it says authentic, souvenier, or sale!
Street food is part of the charm. There is food all around where people will gather, especially the bigger Markets or parks. Some of the food, I can smell for blocks before I see them!
The street food scene is alive and well there in San Juan!
I have seen animals of all sorts being sold on the streets of Puerto Rico. For the life of me, I cannot see how one can put these majestic beauties out without their regal feathers. I know that stress can play a part in their loss of front feathers, but, who knows?
The birds were incredible, but, these birds were definitely lacking in feathers. Were they sick or deficient in what they were eating? I don’t know, but, I didn’t want to hold it or see that little boy holding them. What if they were ill?
The rain came in drops, playing with the vendors. I can imagine how difficult without the benefit of a covering, playing with the weather would be no fun. The umbrellas keep the sun off, but, there isn’t so much protection from the rain.
Oh, yes!! It was torrential!
For all the rain that came, in buckets and torrents, it still was a pretty wonderful day. The sun came back again, drying the clothes on my back. How can you beat that? There should be forgiveness, no?
I want to thank you for taking this trip to San Juan, Puerto Rico with me. I am still island hopping and so, will be gone for another week, so if I take a little longer to respond to your post, don't think I forgot you. I will answer them all! There were literally hundreds of other vendors hawking their goods, but, I am short on bandwidth and this is taking longer than intended, I will cut it off here! (Yoga helps keep you limber plus I was a gymnast in an earlier life) But, I have laid down in the middle of the street for a shot. :) Different trip.

I do love Puerto Rico, for that reason. It really is magic, the minute you step on to those sandy shores. You can almost hear the beat of salsa, the rhythm of the islands.
I can pick out the maracas, the predominant sound in the music. A few years back, I watched a man sitting outside of his house making a set from the fruit of the Higuera tree. I guess I live so far from a life like that, it always catches my interest.

I just love your posts, I was in San Juan in 1978, and fell in love with that place.
I went on a vacation with my hubby and our best friends, it was a magical experience.
Such a beautiful place, with awesome beaches, friendly natives and fun, fun, fun.
Maybe too much fun...came back to the states with my first son in the oven. 🤗

Another beautiful market post! The streets do look quite attractive in all of the pictures, and I think it's pretty impressive that you even know the details of how the cobblestones were made, but I'm not surprised! 🙂
There's a brick-paved road that I take once in awhile where I live, but I have to go very slow on it as there are lots of uneven places and dips in the road.
Irma really hit them hard, and I got to experience Irma too - just not there. It was weaker when we got hit, but it was still quite destructive.
Thank you! I was actually in Florida when Irma hit. I felt like we were the only ones on the road heading south. No hotels were available, food places were closed... I think it was trying to tell me something.
I'm always curious when I see something I know nothing about. The extra knowledge always fascinates me. The cobblestones were brilliant. They were so ingenious long ago.

Interesting! Where were you going at the time, when you were heading south? Were you already in Florida and got kind of trapped, or were you doing a Stormchasers segment? 😅
I was checking out my house down there (unrelated to the storm) and my kids saw the car on the news in DC because we were the only people on the road at the time headed into the storm.
Oh, baby, you know it! Chasing the storm! LOL
Haha! That's kind of funny now, but I'm sure it wasn't funny at the time your kids saw you, the only car headed into the storm! Did any of your friends in DC see your car on the road also?
Only the kids and one friend knew we were there and the only reason anyone thought anything of it is the newscaster made fun of the car going the wrong way. :)
LOL! I don't remember seeing it. We were all at my daughter's house riding the storm out, and maybe I was on cooking duty when that was on TV. We took turns, and of course, some couldn't cook. My daughter never lost electricity, while my whole neighborhood, a few miles away, didn't have power for over a week!
What a beautiful colorful vibrant city never been there but you have certainly made it inviting with your colorful post am a bit late with this one hope you don't mind 😊

Puerto is a wonderful destination. I have it on my bucket list. I know it got hit pretty bad lately and tourism had gone down. Hoping to actually make it there one day.
It really is! It is a quick three hour and a few minutes from Washington, DC to Puerto Rico, and pretty inexpensive, so it is a popular destination from here.
The crime rate has risen, there were so many without, so it has made me hesitate to go for a little bit... well, that and Covid, ;)
