I know that since I write this travel blog most of the anecdotes I tell are satisfying and with "happy endings", but this is not the case sometimes. On most rides everything always goes well and we all go home after having had a great day, but that was not the case this time. What happened to us that day made me think a lot about safety while in the mountains, while at the same time I appreciated that nothing was too serious. To our good fortune, we had the special assistance of a kind dog companion, who took it upon herself to guide us safely to the end of our journey 😃.
Sé que desde que escribo este blog de viajes la mayoría de las anécdotas que cuento son satisfactorias y con "finales felices", pero esto no es así algunas veces. En la mayoría de los paseos siempre sale todo bien y todos volvemos a casa después de haber pasado un día genial, pero ese no fue el caso esta vez. Lo que nos pasó ese día me hizo reflexionar bastante sobre la seguridad mientras se está en las montañas, al mismo tiempo que valoré que nada haya sido tan grave. Para nuestra buena suerte, contamos con la asistencia especial de una amable compañera perruna, que se encargó de guiarnos sanos y salvos hasta el final de nuestro camino 😃.
When we finally completed our more than three-hour hike to Laguna de Los Témpanos, we found a beautiful, imposing and snow-filled landscape. This place was more than incredible, and we had not been the only ones to choose it for our day. There were some other tourists picnicking there, and also some dogs that had accompanied them. Whenever I see dogs in these remote places, I always think "do they love the mountains as much as we do 😃?"
Cuando al fin completamos nuestras más de tres horas de caminata hasta la Laguna de Los Témpanos, nos encontramos con un paisaje hermoso, imponente y lleno de nieve. Este lugar era más que increíble, y no habíamos sido los únicos en elegirlo para pasar nuestro día. Allí habían algunos otros turistas haciendo picnic, y también algunos perros que los habían acompañado. Siempre que veo perros en estos lugares remotos pienso "¿ellos amarán las montañas tanto como nosotros?" 😃.
Although our goal this day was to visit only the lagoon, the road was friendly enough to visit the Vinciguerra Glacier as well. With just a little more walking, we were able to get some very beautiful postcards of the glacier seen from up close, something we had not been able to do on the other times we tried to see one of Ushuaia's glaciers. The walk was completely worth it and we started our way back more than satisfied 😃.
Si bien este día nuestra meta era conocer solo la laguna, el camino estuvo lo suficientemente amigable como para ir a conocer también el Glaciar Vinciguerra. Con apenas un poco más de caminata, pudimos tener unas postales muy hermosas del glaciar visto desde cerca, algo que no habíamos podido hacer en las otras veces que intentamos conocer alguno de los glaciares de Ushuaia. El paseo valió completamente la pena y emprendimos el regreso más que conformes 😃.

It was at this point that we started to do things wrong, and I am sad to say that it was my initiative. Instead of going back the way we had come, I suggested to my companions to climb a small hill in front of the lagoon to have a view from another angle. To get up there, there was no marked trail so we had to make our own way through the snow. We made it to the small summit and everything was in order, and we could even see the landscape we wanted 😶.
En este punto fue que empezamos a hacer las cosas mal, y me apena decir que fue por iniciativa mía. En lugar de volver por el sendero por el que habíamos llegado, yo propuse a mis compañeros subir un pequeño monte frente a la laguna para tener una vista desde otro ángulo. Para subir hasta ahí, no había ningún sendero marcado así que tuvimos que abrirnos nuestro propio paso en la nieve. Llegamos hasta la pequeña cima y todo en orden, y hasta pudimos ver el paisaje que queríamos 😶.
Afterwards, instead of going back the way we had come and returning to the original path, we decided to "cut the road". Continuing forward on a terrain where the amount of snow was already more considerable and not trodden at all, we found a large slope full of snow and small stones at the end. My partner and I said we were going to slide down, while my other partner said he was going to "run" down the mountainside. He started the descent first and of course it didn't go well at all: the speed at which he started running down the slope got higher and higher to the point that he couldn't brake and landed sprawled on an area of sharp rocks. At this point I almost fainted I think.
Después, en lugar de regresar por el camino por el que habíamos llegado hasta ahí y retomar la senda original, decidimos "cortar camino". Siguiendo hacia adelante en un terreno donde la cantidad de nieve ya era más considerable y nada pisada, nos encontramos con una gran pendiente llena de nieve y pequeñas piedras al final. Mi compañera y yo dijimos que ibamos a bajar deslizándonos, mientras que mi otro compañero dijo que iba a bajar "corriendo" por la ladera de la montaña. Él arrancó la bajada primero y por supuesto que no salió nada bien: la velocidad con la que empezó a bajar corriendo fue cada vez más alta hasta el punto de no poder frenar y aterrizar desparramado en una zona de piedras filosas. En este momento casi me desmayo creo.
A moment later, my partner and I went down to assist him. Fortunately, the injured boy was not seriously injured, but he was badly hurt and had blood on his hands. The most important wound he had was on his waist, where he had been hit by a rock in a deep cut. His cell phone had also been blown away and his jacket was torn, as was his backpack. He had a moment of shock in which we left him alone and let him drink water to recover. In truth, the blow was very hard and it was a real miracle that he didn't get hurt more than that.
Un momento después, mi compañera y yo bajamos a asistirlo. Por suerte, el chico accidentado no estaba herido de gravedad, pero sí se había lastimado bastante y tenía sangre en sus manos. La herida más importante que tenía era en su cintura, donde se había clavado una piedra en un corte bastante profundo. También había salido volando su celular y su campera se rasgó, al igual que se mochila. Tuvo un momento de shock en el que lo dejamos tranquilo y que tome agua para recuperarse. En verdad, el golpe fue muy duro y fue un verdadero milagro que no se lastimara más que eso.
From there, the issue was that none of the three had anything to assist him medically. No gauze, no painkillers, no disinfectant, nothing. I never carry first-aid kits in my backpack because one might think that "nothing is ever going to happen", until it does. It was already a little late, so there were not many people on the mountain to ask for help. Luckily, we came across a couple who had just arrived with camping intentions, and they lent us a bandage and some disinfectant for first aid. After that, we had another three hours of hiking to get off the trail 🙃.
A partir de ahí, el asunto fue que ninguno de los tres tenía nada como para asistirlo médicamente. Ni gasas, ni algún analgésico, ni desinfectante ni nada. En mi mochila yo nunca cargo cosas de botiquín porque uno podría pensar que "nunca va a pasar nada", hasta que pasa. Ya era un poco tarde, así que tampoco había mucha gente en la montaña como para pedir ayuda. Para nuestra suerte, nos cruzamos con una pareja recién llegada con intenciones de acampar, y ellos nos prestaron un vendaje y algo de desinfectante para un primer auxilio. Después de eso, nos quedaban otras tres horas de caminata hasta salir del sendero 🙃.
The one who accompanied us steadily all that time and even witnessed my companion's fall was the little dog we had seen in the lagoon. She never left our side for a moment, as if she knew something was going on. At a slow pace, our return took much longer than the initial three hours, but our friend was ahead of us, leading the way and waiting for us as often as necessary. A truly good company ❤️.
La que nos acompañó en paso firme todo ese tiempo e incluso presenció la aparatosa caída de mi compañero, fue la perrita que habíamos visto en la laguna. Ella no se despegó de nosotros ni un momento, como si supiera que algo estaba pasando. A paso lento, nuestro regreso se demoró mucho más que las tres horas iniciales, pero nuestra amiga iba delante de nosotros marcandonos el camino y esperándonos todas las veces que fue necesario. Una verdadera buena compañía ❤️.
Despite the fact that in Ushuaia it got dark late every day, that time the night found us still in the forest. Luckily, we had the guidance of our doggy friend who was with us until the last minute. Even when we finished walking out to the street, she stayed with us waiting for our cab back. I'm sure this dog goes up to the Vinciguerra Glacier every day, chasing the tourists who come up there for their walks. Good for us that she chose us this time ❤️.
A pesar de que en Ushuaia oscurecía tarde cada día, esa vez la noche nos encontró aún en el bosque. Por suerte, contábamos con la guía de nuestra amiga perruna que estuvo con nosotros hasta el último minuto. Incluso cuando terminamos de salir hasta la calle, ella se quedó con nosotros esperando a nuestro taxi de regreso. Estoy segura de que esta perra sube al Glaciar Vinciguerra cada día, persiguiendo a los turistas que llegan hasta ahí a hacer sus paseos. Bien por nosotros, que nos eligió esta vez ❤️.
By the time we got back to the hostel, my hiking partner went to the hospital ward to have a disinfectant wipe and a proper bandage applied. He was also sent to take a painkiller, but luckily the wound didn't look too bad and it was just the shock of the impact. From this chaotic day, I now have in my trekking backpack a small first aid kit with first aid items just in case. And I also learned the great lesson of not leaving the marked trails: the truth is that I have no desire to repeat an experience as traumatic as this one 😅.
Para cuando volvimos al hostel, mi compañero de caminata fue a la guardia del hospital para que le hagan una limpieza desinfectante y le pongan una venda adecuada. También lo mandaron a tomar un analgésico, pero por suerte la herida no se veía tan terrible y solo fue el shock del impacto. A partir de este día caótico, ahora tengo en mi mochila de trekking un pequeño botiquín con elementos de primeros auxilios solo por si acaso. Y también aprendí la gran lección de no salirme de los senderos marcados: la verdad es que no tengo nada de ganas de volver a repetir una experiencia tan traumática como esta 😅.

Los perros son ángeles ❤️, también me los he conseguido en excursiones, tremendos guías jejeje, qué bueno que no fue grave 🙌🏻, ¡qué susto!
Una vez una amiga se fracturó el tobillo durante una ruta y fue tremenda travesía sacarla de la montaña, afortunadamente éramos un grupo grande y los hombres le fabricaron una silla con dos palos y una blusa, ella se sentó allí y la cargaron en hombros, tal cual como una procesión religiosa 😄. Habíamos llamado a Protección Civil y casi al final ellos llegaron con una camilla especial, la montaron allí y la terminaron de bajar hasta la carretera, y de allí a una clínica.
Ay Dios mío, ahora cada vez que voy a esos lugares remotos tengo mucho cuidado porque pienso en cómo harían para sacarme de ahí si me pasa algo jajaja. Que bueno que hayan podido sacar a tu amiga, debe ser un bajón accidentarse en uno de estos lugares pero que bueno que justo tenían gente de sobra para ayudar 🙌
A veces uno no piensa en eso, pero sí es bueno ser precavidos y como dices, armar un botiquín para llevar a las excursiones.
Sí, fue tremendo bajón, y a ella se le hinchó mucho el tobillo, pero luego estaba muerta de la risa cuando la cargaban como en una procesión 😄, al menos nos reímos un rato y bajó un poco la tensión del momento...

What happened was surely destined to happen, who could have imagined that running down a mountain would end in an injury like that, luckily it was just that, a small injury that ended with a wound cleaning and painkiller.
I loved that they met this exceptional guide and companion, who made them endure until the end of the road.

Wow que susto, más aun al darte cuenta que no tenian nada a la mano para auxiliarlo, las veces que he ido a la laguna de los tempanos fue en verano asi que no he tenido la oportunidad de verlo con tanta nieve por otro lado tambien he disfrutaod la experiencia de subir a la montaña con uno de los perros que siempre anda por ahi, con mis amigos la habiamos llamado roñosa y nos acompaño toda la subida hasta que al otro dia la vimos irse con otro grupo 😫
Jajaja y si, esos perros son acompañantes de todo el mundo, hay que dejarlos ser libres por ahí para que sigan guiando a otros 😅.
