Being successful and especially making money on the internet can seem impossible, or at least overwhelming, but it is doable given the right approach and persistence.
Understanding the common barriers can help you overcome or work around them.
1. Mindset
Personally, my biggest challenge is lack of self-confidence and that manifests as being shy, not taking risks, and playing things small. All of these things limit my earning power.
That said, through sheer luck, I started seeing success very early on in the 1990s by simply being online a lot and being helpful. My content got popular and I saw rewards despite myself.
If, like me, your problem is mindset, all you can do is work on yourself or partner with people who compliment and paper over your limitations!
2. Choose Your Adventure
With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to choose a starting point. Whether it's a YouTube channel, podcast, or social media platform, the key is to make a decision and move forward.
The fear of making the wrong choice can paralyze you, but remember that failure is part of the process. It helps you learn and eventually find the right path.
Once you make a choice, it's common to doubt it. This is called choice regret. To combat this, commit to your decision for a set period, such as three to six months. Focus on one idea and block out distractions.
This action biased approach allows you to gather just-in-time information that helps you move forward.
3. Productivity and Patience
Establish a routine and dedicated work zone to maintain your focus. Set specific working hours and stick to them. Consider waking up earlier to work on your business before other commitments take over.
This structure helps you mentally check in and out of work mode.
Did I mention patience already? Patience!
Patience is crucial for building an online income. You have to put in effort on a daily basis without much in the way of positive feedback, with a lot of people who would hate to see you succeed.
Consistently work on understanding your audience and refining what you offer to them.
Bottom Line
Remember, YOUR specific route to success is not going to be a straight line, these stories only appear that way in PR biographies of people who already made it. That is called survivorship bias, I think.
Making mistakes and going down the wrong path is part of the deal.
A few times I have tried to make it with advertising revenue, it just never seems to work out for me as well as other options I have tried. You have to find what works for you, and what can make you money while not keeping you awake at night.
With persistence and learning from each step, you will get there.

The only place I have managed to make money online is here on Hive. I have never tried any of the others.
But I must say, all those points are still valid here.
And Hive income has saved my bacon many times!
I was lucky so many times, but of course there's one thing to be offered an opportunity and another to have the ability to run with it.
You could have a Warhammer blog and YouTube, you might not make $$$ for a while but you might be surprised how many smaller influencers get free hobby stuff and some sites pay for writing.
Indeed.
I have been thinking of doing videos on YT and then I can also use those videos for Warhammer posts... Hmmmm...
Yep, get the YouTube transcript and you don't even need to type the article out :)
For real?
As long as YT understands me! LOL
I have a Python script you can have that goes and grabs the automatic transcription as regular text :)
That's great... I am not a programmer though so I am clueless about what to do with the script.
The only way I know the most on how to make money is online haha. I've been making money online since highschool. I think compared to offline, in terms of geo location, it's limitless, we can work with anyone and in any salary we want. It has its own cons for sure but so far, offline work makes me less money than any of my online adventures.
I agree with everything mentioned here, basically we have to have some type of patience and also just extra thick skin cause not everyone wants to see you succeed. So, you just have to be persistent in anything, there's really no quick way to anything as those tutorial and courses claimed.
I don't really want to go back to commuting to a job so online is the best all around for me :)
I tried commuting a couple of times and that seems really sucks. I mean, traffic and also if we use public transportation that's always crowded, it sounds like hell.
Welcome to this entrepreneurship and self-employed world, it's not easy but trust me, it's worth it 😄
Making money online is weird.
You will either have a very local company, or an online presence, with your company.
But, few people have a business of selling items, and then get an online presence.
The two factors are rarely in one individual.
So, there are either sales, or donations. (and T-shirt sales are donations, but, honestly, a good way to get the donations)
Instead of advertising. Find a product that you love, or that works with your content and your audience. Find an affiliate arrangement with said product.
A peculiar way to make this arrangement is to point to the thing on Amazonium with your link. Fascinatingly, you may become the best salesman for that product, and the mfg may never know.
But, even though i know all this, i never sell myself. And that is really a whole bunch of self-confidence work.
I've made a fair bit of money on Hive and bugger all elsewhere online. I did make a little from my music on Bandcamp and pennies on the streaming platforms, but then I don't really promote it. I reckon my overall hourly rate is not great.
There are so many people trying to build an online presence, but you have to compete with all the others for attention. Only a very few make the big bucks, but there must be a 'long tail'. I think Hive ought to be attractive to those who struggle to make much as we don't have any thresholds. You still have to put the work in here.
Would be a lot better if good posts could earn past 7 days
I know, but we're stuck with that for now. If you have newer posts then people can vote on those and there have been things to incentivise that. Hive is imperfect, but has potential.
Definitely my issue, and i never give myself the chance to get over the initial fear. Also i have too many ideas crashing around inside my head to actually concentrate on one thing long enough!

Here is my actual AdSense earning. Hive earning is far more better in my opinion.
Yup, people like @geekgirl I expect are making very nice income from posting and curating. Me I probably make, what, $2/post maximum so not a fantastic hourly rate but still better than being called names on Twitter for free ;)
Yeah, your right absolutely.
I do try making money on Google AdSense but not profitable. An average of 30k visitor daily with more than 50k views only makes $2.00 average
Yeah I was making $65/mo last time I tried it, and it was taking up space that I could have used for call to actions for my email form or my own stuff, or even affiliate products, plus the ads put visitors off so ...
But some people do extremely well with ads. I had a client until late last year who was making $200k/mo from the Sports gossip niche just with ads.
There are a million ways to make money online, and Hive is among the easiest although doesn't scale. The problem is the lack of value to offer. The same reason why most "projects" on Hive are just reselling curation rewards.
Well, yes earning your first $1 here is easy, and I have been saved a few times by having this as an emergency savings account (kind of, there is a draw down period of course).
I will write a more thought out response as a post.
