Follow Friday: Thoughtful thoughts

in #hive5 years ago

There is still plenty going on around Steem and Hive. @steemitblog have been posting '100 days of Steem' over there, but so far there is nothing radical. Day 1 announced they were doing this, on day 2 they could not come up with anything and day 7 repeated day 3 in Spanish. Their suggestions of curation projects and photography challenges are things the community did anyway.

The respective token prices have been fluctuating. Someone has been dumping HIVE to push the price down, but masses of STEEM is being sold as people power down. I will have another power down today and will be buying more HIVE. I will be doing this using Ionomy. I find I have to buy Bitcoin with STEEM and use that to buy HIVE, but it just takes minutes to do. Give me a shout if you need help with this. @ionomy will airdrop some of their own tokens if you have at least 300 HIVE in your account, so I will leave some on there.

Prices
Prices from @coingecko who celebrate six years this week.

Activity on Hive is fairly steady with both PeakD and Hive.blog ranking above Steemit on @stateofthedapps. PeakD was even about Splinterlands for a while, but the latter is still getting a lot of players. I keep playing and just reached Gold I again.

Dapps

This week I am picking out some Hivians (Hivers? Hivists?) who make me think. Social media does not have to be all cats and memes.

  • @atheistrepublic are using @threespeak to post videos where they discuss news stories around religion. Current events have given them plenty of material with some preachers claiming they can defeat COVID-19. Good luck with that. I think they deserve more comments engaging with these topics and they are generous with their comment votes.
@arseniclullaby is a comic artist, but he also thinks deeply about the state of the world. I guess the two things do overlap as a good comic should make you think. He has been posting about the pandemic and has some thoughts on avoiding getting too stressed out by it.
  • @the-bitcoin-dood also posted some thoughts. He is not too far from some of the worst areas of the USA for infections and deaths.
  • @acidyo and others linked to a piece by @theycallmedan on Hackernoon that clearly explains the chain of events that led to the Hive fork. It is well worth a read.

As always you can post your own suggestions in comments or do your own #FollowFriday post.

The doghouse

@r0nd0n posted about the mass-creation of Hive accounts that attempt to imitate various accounts with variations on the name. Some are copying posts by those accounts to appear more real. So far these are being tracked and downvoted to make their reputation scores zero or less. This should reduce the chances of them being followed accidentally, but be wary. @themarkymark has also posted about this and is part of the effort to deal with them. This could be disgruntled Steemians trying to cause trouble.

I am still looking out for other abuse on Hive, but there is very little vote buying going on. Let me know if you see any.

In these crazy times the Steem/Hive battles can seem less important, but you can make Hive part of your social activity to keep sane. I was part of a Zoom call this week organised by @paulag. @kklye and @revisesociology were there and it was good to chat about how things are going. If anyone else wants to do such a call then let us know and I will join if I can. We are spread around the world, so it will depend on timezones.

Stay healthy, stay sane, stay thoughful.

Hive five!

Sort:

Thank you for this eye opening post, so much is happening on Hive!

Thanks for the shout out, it was fun meeting up on zoom. We ended up chatting for 2.5 hours in total hehehheheheheh

We definitely need more of these for people to get involved. It's fun to see what people are really like.

Thanks for the good recommendations :)
I’m sort of starting from scratch with my follow list after a pretty long hiatus from this world and starting a fresh account so much obliged.

Happy to help. We need to build up this community and get support to those who deserve it. Enjoy!

You offered help with converting Steem to Hive. I created an account on Ionomy today and am having difficulty figuring how to go about it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Where did you get stuck? Steps are:

  1. Send Steem. They give you a memo code and you send it to ionomy
  2. Buy Bitcoin with Steem in the market
  3. Buy Hive for Bitcoin in the market
  4. Send Hive to yourself. There is email confirmation for this.

Sorry for the long time for a response.
I wasn't sure how to start and get Steem into Ionomy. Thanks for the help, I will try it out and see how it goes.

Maybe try a small amount first. @dickturpin had an issue with the funds disappearing when he tried it, but all my transfers have been okay so far.

Will do, thanks.

Yay!
Your post has been boosted with ESTM. Keep up the good work!

I haven't started powering down Steem yet, wasn't sure I should? Are some staying on both platforms? Though, I realize I forgot to post there yesterday when I posted her on #hive. What fickle beasts we all are, eh? Hope your lock down is still going well @steevc

It's a personal choice to power down, but Steem has reached a point where I cannot recommend people use it and so it's time to withdraw and focus elsewhere. It's not purely about money.

We're all fine and hope you are too. Been out in the garden, but it's so warm.

I haven't been keeping up with it, but that is funny that they already ran out of stuff to post about and it has only been one week. I powered up about 400 Hive the other day from some Steem that I sold.

With the current exchange rate you could be far bigger on Hive than on Steem. It's just a gamble on how the prices go. You can always post on both to optimise your rewards.

I think Hive is going to pump!!

That may come in time. It is all about adding value and building the community. Pumps based on speculation tend to not last. I want Hive to be what Steem could have been. We have a job on our hands to build the brand after all the effort we put into Steem.

hehe they censored my post cross posting in steemit because it contained the word "hive" in it :P

They seem so insecure over there. I am not sure if I am being censored, but then I am not posting much there. Their witnesses do not seem to have the guts to stand up against Justin for what they claim to believe in.

Turns out only @blockbrothers and maybe a few others stuck with their convictions to the end.

The rest of them either don't care or are trying hard to justify their cognitive dissonance.

Wear it as a badge of honor.

checking the User Activity (30d) trending lines, we can see how drastically volume went down on steemit and in the same time rised on hive and peakd. Everything is clear and understandable here, but the next phase of this trending line shows that we have reached a steady volume which most likely means that people enjoy current situation and not leaving, (it is visible that blockchain is more alive and rewards are higher even with lower prices) but we are not receiving so much newcommers while steemit activity is rising. I wouldn't be worry if it means that people are coming back for posting same stuff on the "old blockchain", but if it means that we can see a wave of new accounts, then we suppose to consider launching some bigger marketing actions.

I hope the Hive leaders and community are looking to do more marketing. I do what I can on other social media, but I don't have massive reach. We need to build a diverse community with broad appeal.

Thanks for mentioning us!

I hope @splinterlands doesn't get cold feet transitioning to hive. I see running on steem as a huge liability, worse long term than a bunch of Korean players bailing (which would of course would be painful short term). The major risks I see are:

  • Overall stability and security of the STEEM blockchain
  • Justin Sun makes good on his original promise of making STEEM a tron token (I feel as though the stage is being set for this now)
  • Splinterlands is sabataged in order to promote a Tron-owned competitor or knock-off
  • Individual users get prevented from interacting with the blockchain via additional forks

It looks like hive is a pretty good bargain right now. The first time I converted my steem from my power down to hive, I got less hive than steem. The last time I converted it, I got more hive than steem.
I'm using Rudex and Bitshares to convert my steem to hive. I'm also converting my Smoke and Whaleshares to hive.
I just posted one of my hive posts to steem, I figure I might as well take advantage of the platform to get more coins for as long as I can. I changed enough of the wording so that it's not a direct copy-past, but it's substantially the same post that I did shortly after hive split from steem. It will be interesting to see how that goes.

You're becoming one of the few regular positive voices around here, keep it up Steve!

So much else in my feed is just anxious and bitter!

Hope you have a wonderful Good Friday, in the garden I presume!

I think it's important to stay positive whilst keeping some perspective. Life has to go on. I will be in the garden. Got a few things I need to do. Everything is growing right now.

It's a wonderful time of year to be out, I used to love being on my allotment all through spring!

Talk about a perfect day for it too.
