Why more women should practice MMA/martial arts

Martial arts whether it be MMA or a specific systems such as Karate are all in my opinion very beneficial for men and women alike. In specific I think women have more to gain learning martial arts at this time and this post will be a discussion on that topic. In an ideal world we would not have to be concerned about fighting. Unfortunately we do not live in the ideal world (at least those of us who aren't sheltered). In nature there are predators and prey, and typically in nature the predators will target the prey which is showing sighs of weakness. On a more spiritual level, life itself is like a fight and martial arts encourages the practitioner to strengthen both their mind and body in preparation for their opponent.

Women and abuse

Many of us hear stories a lot about women who are abused. This could be an abusive boyfriend (or ex boyfriend). This could be stories of rape. In general women are targets of predators who more often than not are men. These men are bullies and bullies typically target those who the bullies think cannot or will not be able to effectively defend themselves. Most people who get into the martial arts do so because at some point in their lives they were bullied or were the target of predators. The martial arts teach a person how to defend themselves (and others) from bullies of all shapes and sizes, and in general martial arts build confidence in the lives of those who practice it.

Because women are often targeted by predators one of the best actions a woman can take is to learn self defense. It is my opinion that women who have been the victim of abuse or who believe there is a chance they might be a victim should at least consider practicing martial arts.

The benefits offered from martial arts to the female practitioner

Below is a list of some of the benefits offered by the martial arts to women who are practitioners:

  • Self defense. The ability to protect yourself from attack, whether it be a possible rapist or abusive partner.
  • Spiritual growth. To learn the martial arts on the complete level will trigger spiritual growth.
  • A treatment for depression. Preparing for a fight or fighting in general can and does help certain people to manage depression. When feeling low, going to train every day can turn this all around.

In my opinion, I wish more women would learn self defense. I'm tired of hearing about women who are being abused, beaten, raped, and hurt. I want women to learn self defense so no one can victimize them. This self defense can give a woman confidence if she has been a victim of abuse in the past and MMA primarily is a sport which can allow a person to develop confidence. If a woman can physically, spiritually, emotionally defend herself, then it reduces the incentive of a predator to initiate an attack. In other words the would be victimizer will have to think twice before initiating violence.

No self defense technique can make a person 100% invulnerable to attack. The martial arts are merely a way to reduce that vulnerability and to make the practitioner a less desirable target. If the would be rapist or and abuser has to worry about being seriously hurt or perhaps even killed then perhaps at least some will think twice before they act.

Definitely! I love doing Krav Maga and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Here I am with a training buddy after an intense sparring session. I always feel safe walking back home from the studio.

and yes, I do think women must be ready to protect themslves.
"It's not feminine, girls should be weak" - many people are used to say, but when it concerns some real problems with real enemies weakness isn't so cool.
I was fond of learning aikido some years ago. I'm very slim, and there are a lot of people and men as well, who were sure they could offend me just for fun (it was in my childhood), but when they knew I had some skills, they had no wish to try and they started to respect me. When I grew older, my slim body became my best "card" but still people respect my fighting experience.

And to my mind it's better and more useful than just bodybuilding for women (that is rather harmful for women health, as I've discovered). Fighting can really help you when you're in danger, but at the same time you keep your slim and feminine body.

Yes I agree with you. Do the one you can by yourself and for yourself. However, there is a supernatural defence made available by the almighty creator. It is quite impregnable. I did kickboxing for a year before I switched to 100% weightlifting and I can say the following:

The girls there start to become delusional because you always have to slow down because if you start practicing with the girls like you do with the man then everyone will look at you like you are a rapist, it happened to me several times.

I refused to "practise" with women (trainer told us to fight with each other for 2 minutes and then change the partner till we all fought with each other) and after a while I was allowed to skip them.

I came two times per week for an hour per session and I wanted to seriously fight there and not walk on eggshells.

I wanted to bleed when the hour was over.

So what I am saying here is: If you are a girl and you are overweight then go & fight because you will lose weight super fast. If you have fun doing it then I can recommend it too, it is a lot of fun.

Otherwise, I can not recommend it because I do not see a woman winning against a man unless she is super experienced and fights against a weak man that is too scared to hit back.

Pepper-spray does a better job for self-defense. It is cheap and costs no time to learn.

Me too, because they usually lie. A woman that was truly raped doesn't talk about it in public.

Than you did not understand the full essence of martial arts.. It is not just bleeding or winning an opponent... If someone is X2 you weight and has less experience than you, he will still have a great advantage in a fight.. It is about learning improving and sometimes getting ready for the worst...

Most men don't know how to fight either and size doesn't determine who will win a fight if there are no rules and all techniques are allowed. I would say even a small woman can kill a man if she knows where and how to attack. At the same time if the man has equal skill and is bigger then I agree it favors the man in that instance but the same applies if you put a smaller man against a bigger man of equal skill.

Pepper spray or sprays in general are weapons. I think women should learn to use a diverse array of weapons for self defense including their bodies if necessary.

If you have the time for it and it honestly is fun for you, then go for it.
Otherwise, I recommend pepper-spray just like I wrote above.

Size makes people do not even try you, so you win the fight without even fighting, which is mastery of war according to Sun Tzu. Also you do not need to hit as much as someone with no strength. You can also just lift them up and throw them on the ground crushing their bones.

I agree with the no rules and techniques because you will be unable to do shit if the other person just pepper sprays you.

Fighting sport cannot compare to a street fight, which is another reason why it is a waste of time.

Get boxing gloves and smash the shit out of each other, that will be better street fight preparation than any "fighting sport".

On the street you destroy your opponent with full force, hold back, start talking, or try thinking and you lose, at which point your opponent can do with you whatever he/she wants.
