My first attempt to make an Indian chicken curie from scratch.

in #life7 years ago

I love Indian food but because so many ingredients are used it's just easier to go out and get it somewhere.

But I felt like trying to make one today.

I looked up a recipe online that looked decent and went to the shop with Bianca to go and get all the stuff.

It turned out that ingredient wise this recipe was probably the most complex I ever made but it was one of the easiest to prepare.

If you are wondering why I'm pointing to an empty pan...well...that's because for the first time ever I forget to take a picture of me with the food.

And by the time I realized it everything was gone!

It was yummy.

Now I understand that this probably is not the most authentic curry in the world so if any of you guys have any improvements, I'll gladly hear it.

Let's cook.

I don't think I ever used so many prep dishes. Ingredients: Crushed garlic, onion, curry powder, cinnamon powder, paprika powder, bay leaf, grated fresh ginger, sugar, chicken breasts, tomato paste, yogurt, coconut milk, cayenne pepper.

IMG_1863.jpg

Get a skillet or a large pot and put in some oil and fry onions until lightly brown.

IMG_1865.jpg

Next step is to dump in all the ingredients on the right, quickly one by one! And stir! for 2 minutes. (garlic, curry powder, cinnamon, paprika, bay leaf, ginger, sugar)

IMG_1866.jpg

IMG_1872.jpg

The kitchen filled up with an amazing smell of all the spices! After 2 minutes of stirring it looked like this.

IMG_1874.jpg

Next step is to add the rest of the ingredients, minus the cayenne pepper. (chicken, tomato paste, yogurt, and coconut milk)

IMG_1875.jpg

IMG_1880.jpg

IMG_1881.jpg

I stirred everything together and then it looked like this. It had to simmer for 25 minutes.

IMG_1882.jpg

25 minutes gave me plenty of time to clean the massive amount of prep dishes that I used and I also cooked some rice. 25 minutes later I added the cayenne pepper to the dish and let it simmer some more for 5 minutes.

IMG_1893.jpg

End result. I was so happy with the way I served the rice, but Bianca called it tacky :). Anyway, it tasted great! A lot of flavors and some good heat. For a first try, there was nothing wrong with this! But I have to be honest when I go out to get it, it's better...the flavors are way deeper and more complex when the pro's make it. Still, it was fun to try something new tonight!

this looks tasty!

There... you did it again... I'm hungry now! I need to relocate soon, so that you can invite me over for dinner every day! Did I already ask you, if you want to marry me? 😂

Wow thats delicious :) Indian food is one of the best! I visited India before and tried different dishes there, Yummy!
Next time try to make Fish curry. It is very delicious and my favorite curry :)

Good work! You made me hungry now!

Wow!! Sir @exyle. You are great. Excellent cooking. My son loves chicken very much. I cook always many different ways for more tasty. Now I have got the new recipe. This is your's recipe. I will try it today must.
Your decoration is awesome. White rice with chicken curie. Bianca is right but though it is tacky, it's taste will be awesome. Thank you @exyle sir for sharing the delicious recipe :)

Alright no, more tacky rice! :)

Hey exyle,
Just for some information it's called Murgh Makhni in India.
A quick tip also grind the ingredients after cooking on medium heat for a while then strain them, then put on heat the strained masala add curd and chicken in between.lastly served it with some dried fenugreek powder and heavy cream.

Oh, yes, fresh ground spices are so much better than powder. It adds to the cooking time, but certainly makes a difference! I've been doing Thai green curries recently, grinding up fresh galangal, garlic, chili, lemongrass, and basil all together - so much better than the pre-mixed pastes!

Thanks for the tips and the name of the dish!

wow amazing recipe indeed, i really like indian chicken curie and especially crushed garlic and onions are my favorite because they increase the flavor and taste of the dish and they are also full of nutrients and vitamins, i note down the recipe and i surely give it a try and man the end result of the dish is no doubt superb and it looks so tasty too, thanks for sharing this recipe with us and wish you a very joyful and cheerful week ahead friend, Stay blessed.

Oh wow what an amazing food you have made there..Indian Chicken curry is very hard to make because there are a lot of ingredient in Indian food..There are many step as you wrote and as i am Indian i have a experience to make it..Never saw anyone sharing Chiken curry recipe and all India food are very spice too..You had made an amazing food and it must be taste..Very happy to hear some some in steemit likes Chicken curry..Have you ever been to India?@exyle

No, I have never been to India.

My friend, that dish looks too tasty!! Send me some to Venezuela hahaha.

By the way, buddy, if you ever get a chance to try Venezuelan food, do it because you'll love it...

I'll leave you the most famous ones around:

Arepa

Pabellón Criollo

Cachapa

Greetings and a hug my friend @exyle :)

Pabellón Criollo, looks great! After Bianca (@bkdbkd) introduced me to rice and beans I love it.

Good thing you love it, buddy! It's an excellent plate... Greetings :)

Just like most of the food posts you normally make, this one is also quite exceptional. I like the way you broke down the preparation process in a detailed manner, such that it looks quite so simple. I would love to try this. I hope another type of pepper can be used asides the canyenne pepper?

Fine lookin' finished product there @exyle!

Thanks, man!

I like the way you served your rice. 😊

Sounds like a fairly mild curry given you had coconut milk in it. Believe it or not, that's actually a small number of ingredients to start with. But if you enjoyed it that's all that matters.

Is Indian takeaway popular in Holland?

It was very mild. I do like spicy food but to a point where I can still eat spoon after spoon :)

Dude. Have you heard of Kalustyans?

https://foodsofnations.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=14_169

They have the ultimate spice blends for Indian food.

The real store is in NYC and I'm planning to swing by in the next day or two while I'm in town... there's a giant room with hundreds of spice blends for any Indian dish you could imagine. I'm not sure how easy/possible it is to order any of that online, but if you can, I'd highly recommend their Vindaloo blend (if you can handle spice) and the Tikka Masala was good too.

Of course! Spice blends, now that would save a ton of work. We have stores in Rotterdam that sell them. I'll check if they have this brand. I like spice, but spicy to a certain point. When I burn up and have to stop eating to drink milk or water is usually my limit :)

Looks nice. I do the same at home and make always a huge amount of the paste since this is a lot of work. I freeze the paste in small portions and it is then really easy to do a curry from scratch. Just add vegetables and coconut milk. The best one I have ever eaten. 😊

Great tip about the freezing of the paste. That would save a ton of work in prep time.

Bro Curry look very delicious. Every one like Indian food. Indian food is little bit spicy and oil and even take more time to cook but you never forget the feel and which force you to eat again and again.

Indian food is very hygienic which give your proper energy to work for whole day.

Bro i suggest you that must cook Tanduri Chicken once in life.

I am going to suggesting you one challenge if you want to prepare more dishes. Channel name Country Food. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKEPJo5eTHbKDgHxvUSR9Jw

Must try once Granny recipes. Your will surely really like it.

Bookmarked the page! That looks cool. Thanks, man!

Oh, man! That looks amazing @exyle! Indian and Himalayan is my favorite cuisine by a mile.

Himalayan! That you don't hear a lot. what's your favorite Himalayan dish?

This is exactly how my hubby cooks it. He is a very enthusiastic cook, so we have every spice that you can think of anyway. No need for us to go and buy all that stuff.

I have to disagree with you getting takeout, even though it is easier. Keep on trying, you will get better, and sooner or later you won't want the shop bought stuff!

My husband also adds paneer, a type of cheese that he also makes from scratch. Look up a recipe and try it. Paneer takes up the flavour of anything it is cooked with (I am talking about any kind of curry).

Happy cooking!

"Indian chicken curie" sounds both delicious and like a project designed to curated indian content on steemit :)))

Indian Curry is the best, second probably is the Japanese curry :D The curry I tried in India is kind of watery and not that thick. I prefer thick texture tho as I can eat with Indian rice and naam bread (especially garlic flavor) :P

I'm guessing you could deepen the flavor by letting it sit and then fry the onions , etc. Also how is crushed garlic compared to the powder? I might switch to that instead of the badia option instead. The curry looks great but I'm not good with too much heat so on a scale of 1-10 how spicy is it?

About 2. Not spicy at all (only the cayenne). I personally find that crushed garlic has more flavor than garlic powder.

You never know how creative you can be until you try to put something together. I bet that next time you try this out, it will come out tastier and you will be some steps closer to being a pro. My mama always tell me that the secret to good cooking is following another person's steps but the secret to great cooking is finding out what method works best for you. This post caught my interest cos aside loving cooking, I always try to learn new things in the kitchen. I'm gonna give this a try someday, beginning with your steps until I'm able to try out something new for myself. And please, the vegetable besides the rice in the last picture, what is it called?

It Does look great though! And with practice the better taste will come! The pro’s have done it many many times.. that’s why it isn’t just the same but the satisfaction that you’ve made it on your own cannot be replaced with more complex taste! :)

My mouth is watering just looking at this. That's a great assortment of spices!!!

If you every need another tried and true recipe, it's a two step recipe. First, make the Garam Masala, then make the curry

Garam Masala
Chicken Curry
Naan on the BGE

Thanks, man! Naan on the BGE! That's sounds interesting!

holy shit man! that's one thing i've never been brave or had the time and concentration to have a go at, looks like you crushed it.

Thanks, man!

You would have made my Middle School Cooking Teacher proud with how you measure out each ingredient and put them into their own bowls.

I am SOOO bad about not doing this and unless I'm having the kids help I use my hand for measurement 99% of the time. I'm pretty accurate too, my Wife challenged me on this once and had me pour the ingredients into measuring spoons to double check everything. She gave up after I was almost dead on 5 ingredients in a row.

Have seriously considered doing it like you are showing here for my cooking posts, but then it's just so many more dishes to wash lol. But seriously I probably should be a little more professional about how I do it for my posts.

You presentation is Great! and shows where I may need to make some improvements.

I cook from 'the hand' too. But for my posts, I like to go the extra mile. Also, I must say that I do enjoy prepping, it's relaxing.

Kind of what I figured, need to add a little extra professionalism to the posts. Going to have to step up my game a little.

My kids love working with me in the kitchen, especially my 8 year old, and they tend to do a lot of the prep work on bigger meals with me. Heck a few meals they pretty much cook start to finish at this point and love that we have this as something we enjoy together.

It looks and sounds delicious!

@exyle,
Ha ha you add little spicy right! if we make we add more spicy and it's not an Indian style at all, we make it as Sri Lankan style! But never added Yogurt so far! That would be a new detail and i will definitely try that out! Nice to hear that you like Indian foods!

Cheers~

That looks like it took a lot of time and effort, I hope it was worth it all. Thank you for sharing your recipe. You post great content @exyle.

Hey @exyle let me in... I’m hungry!!

Hhhh I love it :)

i am always saw and see your post i hope future in the more good good post thanks of our s also thanks sir @exyle

You just reminded me I haven't had a curry in ages but I did eat some unexpected nambread the other day which was nice and as for the dish it looks lovely and creamy seems like a job well done @exyle

The Indian food is wonderful with chili ;)

Eating chicken curry as I'm reading this post.

The Rice is Nice served like a ball. Fit good to the weather we have nowadays here in Holland. Looks like a snowball.
The cury do look Very spicy when I See the ingredients! But keeps you warm as well.
It Seems a delicious dish, indeed a lot ingredients, but you know how to handle.
Thanks for the “parts list” and have a nice evening.

mmm. Looks very nice. I'm having curry tonight but it doesn't look as good as yours. Have a look at Al's Kitchen on YouTube - he show's you how to do all of the indian dishes in authentic restaurant style.

I salute you, there is rarely a man who wants to cook alone

Both my husband and my two sons are very keen cooks, and they do a brilliant job. Maybe it is because I do not like cooking, and they must have gotten tired of the limited dishes that I cooked when the boys were still at school. Now they are out of the home, and my husband soon realised that, if he wants to eat, he will have to cook. When the kids were at school, he would cook over weekends. Now he does it nearly every night, and he loves it. He says he especially likes my appreciation. I do not have to fake that, though, because he really makes gourmet food!

yes that's something nice, you're lucky to have a man like him

This thing literally look like what my mom cooked when I was a child. It wasn’t Indian food, but it looked identical. Few years ago my neighbor from India cooked outside every weekend and I could smell their delicious food. For me it’s litle too much spices they are using, but overall it’s really good. You definately did an amazing job. I can smell your food just by looking at it.
