The 5 Filters of the Mass Media Machine - Noam Chomsky

in #life8 years ago

According to American linguist and political activist, Noam Chomsky, media operate through 5 filters: ownership, advertising, the media elite, flak and the common enemy.

Video length 4:46.

Media no longer keeps politics in check

Sort:

This "informative" short film is shock full of anti-capitalist and pro-socialist propaganda, it's quite honestly a lot less appealing to me than Chomskys own work is. I didn't ever fully agree with him, but I remember among other things "Manufacturing Consent" the documentary movie was a lot more nuanced than this.

It's a shame that most of both "left" and "right" don't hold themselves to as high a standard as they do with their supposed enemies. There could be a mutual exchange of ideas, but most people just blame evil of some sort for why they must trick the others into thinking the better way.

Also I share the view of yours where we should work together and try to understand each other instead of fighting by any means necessary to gain upper hand.

Agreed. We shouldn't sacrifice our values in the pursuit of political power. It will only bring pain in the end anyhow.

Sadly that is what is being done to this day. I don't know if the politicians themselves represent any values of their own or just flip flop between sponsors and the masses. It's a tough job for sure, but I'm hoping for the system to really improve - the whole politic scene. More transparency and discussion between the leadership and people.

Manufacturing Consent is on my watchlist for sure. But when it comes to this video, are all the parts something you can't agree with?

I don't live in America so I can't tell how bad the press media is there. CNN and the likes, but you say and do what your boss tells and they of course have their own interests,no? And there isn't a problem when the major networks end up being owned by fewer and fewer people? Didn't you notice the huge difference on how Hillary and Trump were treated in Media? I've seen videos where someone mentioned she thinks Trump can win and she was laughed at, this happened in some interview on major network. While Hillary were investigated for the whole email scandal while doing speeches for big banks and getting something like 500k $ each?

Is it all just blind propaganda and anti-capitalist?

No, it isn't all propaganda. Certainly not the things you point out, but there are so many more little details in this video.

It's like those animated short films on the Federal Reserve that people watch on Youtube. As bad as some things are, it's not a fair portrayal of the situation and the parties involved in my opinion. There are little assumptions and prejudices sprinkled in with the facts, though they can be hard to tell apart.

-I don't live in the U.S. either by the way. Only by proxy of the internet, so to speak ;) I'm a Swede. I'm also not only an Anarcho-Capitalist, just to introduce myself a bit, but I come from the far (very ideological) left and it took me some time getting here.

Yes, it isn't as black and white most of the times, but I just can't shake of the feeling of how with huge amounts of money lots of things can be done, good and bad. I'd like my media to be neutral as possible, just reporting the news and have quality investigate journalism sprinkled in between. Someone always tends to put their own spin on these things however.

How is Sweden by the way these days?

I'll agree with you that money can be invested or wasted on horrible deeds. What I, as a Cooperative Agorist, think is that we as individuals working together need to set standards for the organisations we start. In my opinion, the way to work away the issues and ultimately to rid ourselves both of institutions based on conscription and those based solely on perpetuating myths, is by building something better.

But that better synergy of organisations can't be built within the constraints of collectivism. It has to be fully independent, just like a company. (or so a company would be, theoretically, if we had no state)

Sweden is experiencing issues, but then again, this isn't the first time. The politicians are experts are creating new problems though. My favorite example since some time now, is how they tricked thousands to enter Sweden legally on grounds of being promissed our imigration policy would "remain compassionate, open and tollerant" ... and then made the vast majority of them illegal only a week later.

How's that for creating black markets? Not such a great move...

But most of what you hear online from so nationalists and fascists is at least BS. Yes, we have an issue with crime in all it's forms - and weapons; pistols, rifles and grenades being used increasingly too - but it's mostly concentraded in the south of the country and it isn't spreading as fast and alarmingly as they say.

Still, it is an issue that more Swedes should be taking seriously. But they're not listening and I have a feeling they won't start until the new nationalist conservative party take second place in parlament. They already have close to 50% of voters in some southern parts.

Hey, I just focus on my work here now. I was gonna leave some day anyways ;)

I guess things have to get worse before they get better. Hopefully it doesn't come to that and swedes stop and face the facts and act accordingly - Like taking in smaller numbers perhaps? It feels like a lot of proper discussion was being shunned and shut down quick which lead to people getting angry and now these new parties are gaining a lot of supporters.

I'm not sure if it is so good idea to take huge numbers of immigrants who don't speak the language and kind of act hostile towards the host country and their ideology - the same ideology that is the reason for them being there. But I'm sure I only get to hear the bad news, I'm sure many of them are thankful for the opportunity and I hope all the best for them.

New nationalist conservative party getting 50% of votes in some parts? That does speak volumes. Didn't know that, thanks. Isn't this kind of change happening all over the Europe with similar immigrant rates?

It will be interesting to follow how things play out in the following decades. As always but if the sink ships, captain, or in this case, captains should go down with it ;)

And I happen to live too close to Sweden.. Which is why I'm so interested in what's happening over there. You guys are far ahead us in immigration numbers so you're like looking to future in our nation.

Where do you live though?

I love your stuff on Wolong and doge! I think Wolong has awakened again.

I always get a kick out of how they animated his work...

I can sympathize with @the-ego-is-you that it is extreme (as is a great deal of academic theory) but we often need extreme scenarios and explanations to make us take a hard look at ourselves, our environments, our behaviors, etc. It's rare to find this form of analysis without going to the very edge.

There's nothing wrong with being 'extreme' really. Radical justice is better than mediocre injustice. But that doesn't negate a need for accuracy. 'Propaganda', by definition, isn't supposed to be accurate. It's myth building "for a purpose". Creating a mirrage to move the masses in the direction you choose.

In practice, by making others dependant on a myth, you are enslaving yourself to their false beliefs. If carried on, this intellectual, two sided, slavery itself will lead to slow death. But also, if the myth itself ends, you risk doing so with it.
