Why I Stopped Drinking Alcohol And Will Never Drink Again

in #life7 years ago

Well, it only took me about 30 years to figure out what a scam alcohol is!

I thought I was smarter than to fall for something that obvious for that length of time. But, no, it totally fooled me.

I thought it was adding to my life. I thought it was making it easier for me to be more sociable. I thought it was giving me confidence. And, I thought it was helping me deal with stressful and difficult situations.

Nope. I got that all wrong!

It was taking away from my life. It was making me think I was being more sociable while I was actually not connecting with anyone in any real way. It made me think I had confidence while it actually drained any real confidence out of me and made me actually more insecure. And its depressing nature made all stressful and difficult situations feel far more stressful and difficult than they were.

And I probably spent about $500,000 during the last 30 years learning this lesson!

Well, the past is the past. Rip that rearview mirror off the car of your life and throw it out the window. No looking back.

I am now so excited about my future without consuming poison and making myself constantly sick.

I discussed how I came to this realization and how easy it was to stop drinking once I realized what it was doing to me here:

Make sure to follow me here on Steemit because tomorrow I'll tell you how stopping drinking has enabled me to become my truest and most authentic self. And it is WAY better.

Way to go Jeff!! Love you man, you are a real inspiration in so many ways.

UPVOTED and Re-Steemed.

It is always best to do it for yourself first and watch how much it inspires others to do the same, it is being in touch with your own body and listening to it, instead of the hype of external sources... to your health ;)

@jeffberwick @kencode Those who want to free from Alcohol | I Made comic from my Experience ... How to deal with peer pressure, stress, anxiety ? want to quit but cannot ? what is pulling you back ? you can buy my Book from amazon NOW (Very affordable) and release yourself, feel the fresh air
Achieve your Goals TODAY ! here is the link :https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07958PPXT

I would love to give you free also (ASK ME FOR FREE ) ...i use power of affirmation its my personal experience

It's called the "Mucusless diet healing system" for a reason :)

Everything is frequency and alcohol leaves me feeling uninspired and drained of creativity. Instead we should fill our cups with a fresh dose of nature and be uplifted while grounding back to the Earth. Onward and upward!

I'd rather have a good cup of coffee instead of alcohol.

nice solution, I always regret the day after I consumed alcochol.... It's rare but still happens 2 times a year or so

it's poison, pretty much no way around that. i'm glad jeff posted this. i stopped drinking after learning enough about the body to understand the health risks.

I agree. i quit drinking years ago as well. its your body slowly and you dont even know it.

Its all about moderation. A glass of red wine can have health benefits. Alcohol is not evil poison it helped to keep us safe from bacteria prior to fridges.

Tell this to the Ukraine miss cuz she died driving with a bottle of alkohol ,our body don't need alcohol to clean bacteria that is a pure lie.

LOL I didn't say it's for our bodies to clean bacteria. It was to stop bacteria from ruining our beverages during storage.

Indeed, there are definitely some who can't handle moderation. I've given up booze (or "the sauce") a few times for a month plus and have never noticed much difference. I've definitely not spent anything like $500K on it in the last 30 years. That would be $45 a day - I'd have to be drinking a lot of expensive wine or spirits every single day.

Still if only we'd all put a fraction of that into Bitcoin since 2009 we'd all be living like kings!

However, good for you - we all need to do what is good for us and makes us happy. Drinking for other reasons - all sign of something else going wrong be it addiction, depression or pissing your life away at the bottom of the barrell.

it actallly destroys the grease around your red bloodd cells and kills neurons giving u that "ddrunk bliss" feelling but yeah its redculous how bad alcohol is, humans needed alcohol in our past to get throgh life!
now we ddont need to be drinking so much alcohol

iits a tool of social ccontrol

we all know that the governments dont keep canbis illegal and acoohol legal for our "public safety" we all know its about money!

and so we can all vvote with our dollars and just stop buying allcohol!

if u wat beer or liqour brew some mead or microbrew some beer urself! its quit fun!

but ya many coool natural altneartives to alcohol like kava kava or GHB which is found naturaly in ur brain, gives u a reverse hangover and produces human growth horome inur body!

GHB is also naturallly found in red meat and in ur bloostream naturally!

hahah so true! Our body treats us better when we are not being mean to it. Healthy eating and exercising will make you feel uplifted straightaway. Cant beat that. Endorphins are a great ally as well. Serotonin is released an ahhh what a feeling.

Looks like an amazing day there in Montana @jeffberwick
Thanks for sharing this story

I have come to find that certain geographical locations sort of "drive" people to drink more or less than other places. I travel a lot and i find that some cities entertainment is more centered around drinking than others. most likely the smaller the town the likely the number one social activity is based around drinking. for instance I go to Providence Rhode Island and end up on a 3-4 day drinking spree while New York City i'm enjoying art seeing shows walking the different parks and more or less enjoying the sights. LA is the same way. even at a party I drink less than I would than say Memphis, TN. I commend you for giving it up. it takes a lot of self discipline that not many people can muster due to social circles and general location and activities

Yes it's hard when everyone around you is drinking...

there's nothing wrong with drinking alcohol if you drink in moderation. Honestly, alcohol is expensive and it puts a hole in your pocket over time. Nothing beats the good 'o' plain water.

And works like a charm! Best thing I ever did

Isn't that coming from Dr. Christopher?

No, its by Dr. Arnold Ehret

This is called "tie". Just ordinary people need a doctor to stop drinking. Or they sew themselves into the skin of an ampoule, which leads to death if you take alcohol.

Only one willpower is enough for one.

"Drinking good wine with good food in good company is one of life's most civilized pleasures." - Michael Broadbent

We have switched to gin, soda and lime. Very little hangover, very pure and few calories. Alcohol is truly a poison, but so much worse with all the crap that gets mixed into it.

Soda helps cut down the hangover. I learned that from an old Greek woman in my younger days of college binge drinking. as I got older I most def got wiser to the soda addition of my vodka

I used to do tequila and lime juice. Then I got a gum line cavity from the acid in the lime juice. If you drink lime juice, rinse your teeth right away. I learned how important that is the hard way.

I stop drinking long ago. I figured out the money saved can be "reinvest" into bitcoins n other coins and i never look back anymore. LOL

congrats on stopping. It is poison. that is why we get hangovers from it. All the best moving forward

Nice job man~ go for it. :)

Thank you for sharing your experience.

We love u Jeff!

That sound interesting, your reasons for taking alcohol is of no doubt because a lot of people take alcohol sake of the same reason. I can't wait to read on your next post on how you were able to stop and how it has helped you..

Good video as always. I may have to start drinking after buying antshares at 12 bucks.. Oh well.

LOL! I feel you pain, but in a different direction. I bought $1018 worth of ANS at $0.26/coin. My position was up to 16.3 BTC in value on Monday and was $43k. Now has dropped back to $22K. They always say to take you profits when the are up big and quick. I seem to not listen to this wisdom and i really don't do much drinking.

"life is just one giant mindf%$ck" right on man. keep going great stuff you're sharing. there's no such thing like drinking in moderation right?

While I understand your decision a 100%, I am wondering why you still smoke?
I see this as a way bigger scam then alcohol.

Also as it makes you more sociabel and confident for the moment, it just eats the confidence I would have for tomorrow. A hangover doesnt make me very sociable either.

I don't. I quit smoking months ago. I quit eating meat, dairy, bread, pasta, rice and almost anything but raw veg and fruit too...

I love that you are a high profile crypto vegan! Keep spreading both those messages.

💚 🍉 🍍 🍌

ohh my bad then. I still picture you with a glass of red wine and a cigarette doing interviews.

Bowing...profusely! 😲

Greetings from Yucatan! For those who don't remember where it is, it's about 3.5 hours from Cancún. 🙋

Glad you stopped smoking Jeff. it put me off watching you as an ex-smoker. Irritated me somewhat.
Bet you're feeling wonderful!

That's the fact and reality when a man grow old that's the time you realized you are more concerned of what you eat and drink because life is beautiful we need to live fit and healthy oh yeah! rock in roll to the world.

Nice! Have you looked into intermittent fasting? My fiance and I have been restricting our caloric intake to about 6 or 8 hours a day and have been having great results. Looking forward to more garden harvests soon, since most food loses much of it's nutrient value by the time it makes it to the grocery store. Onward and upward!

Glad to hear you quit smoking. It's one thing that bothered me a little about your videos. I definitely get the message that you were doing what you wanted and I respected that... but smoking through entire interviews made me trust you less. I'm glad you quit smoking cigarettes. Hope you keep with your decision.

That's awesome Jeff! Keep up the good work! I'm very big into health myself so I get where you're coming from.
Ever try kombucha? Very good for you, just an aquired tatse though.
Btw I've been watching your youtube channel for years now, kudos man!

Get ready for some heavy loss of body mass Jeff, it's nearly impossible to get the protein you need to maintain your muscle mass. As we age we loos alot of it, you may be putting yourself at an early dficit, but good luck buddy!

Look into Moringa. It's one of the most assimilable forms of protein and it's a plant. :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moringa_oleifera

We grow tons of moringa and eat it almost every day.. just had some moringa & mung bean soup for dinner... My mother in law makes it at least once a week. We have like 10 moringa trees.. We call it 'molongai' (tagalog language from Philippines) .. in Jamaica they call it morangay

Awesome to hear! I love Macka B and his amazing spoken word!

Awesome! Im going to Negril in August... small world.

I will do that thahy-you!

Cheers! Just followed ya.

Followed/upvoted/looking forward to tomorrow! Ugh....I feel like you just said exactly what's been going through my mind for the last 20 years. My entire network of friends are drinkers...it's what we do. My weekends which are supposed to be fun, are now just drinking then spending the next 2 days on my couch recovering. It's ridiculous but such a hard one to break. I stopped smoking 9 years ago, and I think if I stopped alcohol, it'd be harder....maybe I'm wrong....looking forward to your video tomorrow!

I do not drink wine. I do not know why people would like to drink as it is not tasty.... and expensive!

Congratulations on beating your addiction.

Now you can start living life in HD.

Excellent post. I agree 100 percent. For a long time, I felt that I needed alcohol or drugs to be accepted, to be liked, to be smart, and to be funny. I was disillusioned. If anything, just like you, I became less of all those things.

It took me almost 20 years to realize the same as you did: that alcohol was only destroying all in my life that I treasured most. It wasn't easy, by an means. But it gets EASIER. I'm curious, was there a tipping point for you that caused the change?

For myself, it was the consequences. I couldn't hang on to anything meaningful, whether it be relationships or finances. After putting it down, I had to enter a rehab center to stop for good, I started to get more motivated. More ambitious. I worked harder. I developed better and lasting relationships. I met the woman of my dreams. I got involved in crypto-currencies and anarcho-capitalism.

In all seriousness, no one could give me a million bucks to drink again. I have an awesome and fulfilling life and it all started with the decision to put the stuff down for good and get some help.

I've been blogging about similar stuff here on Steemit, and this is the second post I've seen today about someone saying that their life changed for the better after stopping. I think it's really awesome man!! Much love! Maybe I'll see you at Anarchapulco someday . . . but I'd have to get a passport first haha

Looking forward to tomorrow's post . .

Good for you! It's a tough thing to change but it will absolutely change the way you look at the world. The older I get, the less I miss not drinking. It all started for me when my kids were young. I wanted to set a good example for them and not be like my dad. I stopped the family disease and my life is better for it.''

Good choice! Alcohol is the worst of all the drugs... except, maybe bath salts (i wouldnt know).. i love watching your conscious evolution and growth into amore spiritually awakened being.. Ive been following your posts for tears and its bringing me back to my awakenings, to watch you get healthy and active.. really inspiring.. I gotta get down to anarchopolco one of these years.. i think we'd have a good time kicking it! You might enjoy exploring my projects http://humandalas.com movement meditation for groups and https://villages.cc mutual credit system.. one love, brother!

I love the sound of that project! I'm very attracted to sacred geometry and mandalas. I planted a spiral garden at one of my old houses but I'd love to do a crop circle inspired garden. Followed ya! Onward and upward.

Crop circle shaped garden sounds like the ultimate! Super galactivated food will take you to another plane, completely! I bet theres a lot of original crop circle corn being eaten, right? That's probably why they make crop circles, honestly.. lol... You just got my mind going! stoked that humandalas is inspiring to you! I'm curious if it is something your friends and community would be open to participating in.. Just getting back into steem but, really quickly meeting a lot of really cool people. Nice to see this network growing! Aloha!!
Alien consciousness

I do think think humandalas would resonate with quite a few folks in this community. It sounds really cool. I live just outside Asheville, NC where there are certainly some open-minded folks. :)

You should check out Les Brown, he did some awesome experiments growing gardens in pyramid greenhouses and had a square greenhouse next to it as a control. The pyramid greenhouse produced food that was often 30% larger. The funny thing too is that his compost pile in the middle of the pyramid wouldn't break down, so he had to move it out of the greenhouse. He found that meat dehydrated in the pyramid instead of rotted. Wild stuff!

Check this out: http://www.electrocultureandmagnetoculture.com/uploads/3/4/1/3/3413602/the_pyramid_1978_book_les_brown.pdf

Pyramids are amazing.. Nassim Haramein theorizes that the Giza pyramids were wireless electricity generator, powering a gravitational field allowing for flying magnetic boats (How the bricks were moved) and all kinds of other cool inventions... Really cool theory .. this guy will blow your mind.. I find that pyramids amplify consciousness. Enjoy..

Nassim is awesome. It can be information overload at times but each time I revisit these ideas, I feel like I understand them a bit more whether consciously or subconsciously. I love pyramids!

What the heck?

Good for you man, I like the taste of a good cold beer but never take to much of it.

Good decision! I did this long time ago!

Quit drinking this week as well :) Happy to see your post/reinforcement to stay sober. The chaos we cause on alcohol! Sobriety is the gift.

Alcohol is poison, you are a very wise man Jeff Berwick.

I guess he learned that lesson the hard way.

Congratulations on stopping drinking and smoking. I wish you well!

Great post and education for those late night party goers.

Getting addicted to alcohol can destroy a person's life.
Thanks for sharing this @jeffberwick

Followed!

Congrats on this! I've never been too needy of alcohol, but do enjoy a good social drinking session. BUT seriously congrats on your control on this!

I am in the process of quitting alcohol myself ... Its not easy but its worth while that's for sure ... I quit smoking Dank 6 month ago and it was very easy after 2 weeks .. alcohol is much harder !!

Alcohol is terrible stuff. Causes actual long term damage physically, and as you get older the hangovers get worse. People drink because of the social atmosphere and culture around it but the actual effect of alcohol is mostly negative beyond social.

I stopped drinking and smoking by the grace of God 27 years ago.

ich habe schon for jahren den alkohol in meinene leben stark reduzihrt
und bin sehr froh darüber
aber er ist so algegenwertig in unserer geselschaft

You really hit the nail on the head, talking about how it charades as a confidence booster. I promise all of you who feel more confident on alcohol can tap into that confidence via other methods, because it lies within you, not within the booze. Once tricked into believing it's the only way to evoke that hidden confidence, you have backed yourself into a corner. Give it a rest some nights... try being the you that you enjoy on alcohol with out the alcohol. It's always been you. (:

I tip my hat to you. Keep it bro, my lesson was expensive too but well learned.

Real talk right here - @jeffberwick mad respect.

Key things you need:

  1. Meditation

  2. Float tanks

  3. Hydration : I recommend Dr. Patrick Flanagans MegaHydrate - both in pill form and get the Crystal Energy they sell as well. It will change your life. Negative Hydrogen Ions are the strongest Antioxident known to man. Flanagan worked for the pentagon and patented this stuff. Its amazing. Also always drink alkaline water.

  • add all that with a healthy lifestyle of working out and keeping optimal testosterone/DHEA levels.

Agreed! I started a regular habit of working out and riding my bike instead of driving as part of a normal routine, and it has done wonders for balancing my mental health and anxiety.

Who is Flanagan?:

"Dr. Patrick Flanagan™ invented the Neurophone in 1958. It is an electronic nervous system excitation device that transmits sound through the skin directly to the brain, for which he received U.S. Patent no.3,393,279 in 1968.
The invention earned him a profile in Life magazine, which called him a “unique, mature and inquisitive scientist”. Dr. Flanagan™ has continued to develop the neurophone and it is currently being sold as an aid to speed learning.
Dr. Flanagan™ at age eleven developed and sold a guided missile detector to the U.S. Military, aged seventeen gained his air pilot’s license and was employed by a Think Tank at The Pentagon, and later as a consultant to the NSA, CIA, NASA, Tufts University, the Office of Naval Research, and the Aberdeen Proving Grounds for the Department of Unconventional Weapons and Warfare.
Since 1981 Dr. Flanagan™ has invented a series of useful devices and products based on water and specific mineral structures, in the area of health. Several of these have been very successful in the marketplace. His identification of the special properties of the negative hydride ion while once ridiculed got serious attention when the Nobelist Chandrasekhar proposed it as a major component in far space. Several scientific papers by Dr. Flanagan™, about Silica Hydride have been published in peer reviewed journals such as the ‘International Journal of Hydrogen Energy’, and ‘Free Radical Biology and Medicine’.
Dr. Flanagan™ actively continues his activities as scientist and inventor and philanthropist, promoting the really new science and new approaches to human healing, especially those based on the great traditions of India and Egypt.
For decades, Dr. Flanagan™ has openly invited stringent scrutiny of his research and discoveries by the medical and scientific communities. The seeds of this effort are blossoming at an exponential rate as the scientific community is validating and embracing his extraordinary contributions. Academics and researchers at universities from Oxford to Stanford are beginning to study Dr. Flanagan™’s breakthrough discoveries and teach them to Scientists of the future."

I would love it if you had time to check out a post I made a few days ago.

I totally agree with you, great vid.

Alcohol is a strangely bewitching drug for some people. The story of the drunk who is the last to understand he is, in fact, a drunk is as common as diner apple pie. Lives fall apart, shedding their layers like a wilting rose. All of your friends see it happening and the good ones confront you. But for some strange reason the alcoholic cannot see their addiction for what it is.

Taking personal responsibility for the behavior is indeed the best way to go. And, admittedly controversially, I believe the ways in which we go about getting people back to good health are flawed. Too often there isn't enough focus on the types of things you've said here, Mr Berwick. Understanding that drugs don't really make a life, that they are inhibitors who's "good times" come on a line of credit. And like all lines of credit, interest is due before you can pay down the principal.

I am also concerned with the notion that a person is helpless before their behaviors. I do acknowledge that addiction is not a one size fits all proposition, but I find it profoundly anti-humanist to suggest a person must be a slave to something even in recovery, which is what so many cessation programs teach. The message inherent to that methodology is that you're not worthy, you're not able, you're not good enough. Given that so many people come to this state of affairs because they have something missing in their lives, because something has become so painful that they must medicate to feel well, how terrible then to further attack that soft spot in their hearts when we should be building them up!

And I'm here to say that ANY man or woman who has the courage, self awareness, and frank honesty to admit they have a problem IS good enough, IS worthy, IS able! I don't promise ease, but nothing worth having in this life is attained easily. But that hill belongs to you if you have the will to climb it, not the other way around.

Here's to you, Mr. Berwick, and to a better life for everyone with the courage to reach out and take it.

@jeffberwick.
I hope you did not replace the alcohol with drugs...
Uh oOh !

Generally speaking, we do without drugs by drinking alcohol, then we do without alcohol with a job or a passion.

And it takes many years to do so.

Good luck to you.
@tata.lucette.

1 year sober myself. Your liver will thank you in the future! ;)

I stopped drinking in the age of 18, because 3 month after I started, I observed that I got a little addicted to it. And truly it wasnt that easy to stop in the beginning but I managed to not touch alcohol for next 16 years.

And in the age of 34 there is only one addiction left I am still fighting. Its porn.

Congratulations @jeffberwick!

It is so easy to go from this to, we should ban all alcohol.

And since Jeff is an anarchist, I am sure he is not down with that.

Alcohol is not the problem, it is one of its symptoms.
I doubt that Jeff could have given up alcohol until he was ready to do so.
You don't just grab the crutches from someone and tell them to walk.

You have to strengthen your emotional system
before you can use it without alcohol.
Else, what usually happens is you go from being social with the bottle, to being living in a closet afraid to peek out, without.

And arrest people for using it again?? No

You are much smarter than I, I waited until I was 60, then forced to quit after setting in a hospital bed with pancreatitis, that was 3 years ago.
Have NEVER touched a drop since. With that type of pain, no need for a 12 step program for me. I have lost 80 lbs, and now feel great, I also cut out all grains in the diet.

Good post

Good job, too much alcohol changes your personality and you will become a problem for your frinds and family. My father couldn't stop and ended his life. If you would like to help change the mentality here towards helping the poor it would be good. Without the help of the government my mother would have not been able to raise me the way she did. Think about that when being against the state because as you can see here on steemit, nobody helped me out of my homelessness in winter.

Alcohol has following types of harms:

1-It leads to other grave sins

2-Psychological harms

3-Medical harms

4-Social Harms
1-Alcohol the mother of sins:

Alcohol leads to many other grave sins. Continual or large scale use of alcohol has a bad effect on most people's sex-life. The high rates of incest (sexual relations with close relations like son with mother, brother with sister etc) and rape in the European countries are due to the large consumption of alcohol in those countries.
2-Psychological Harms

It may perpetuate your shyness, anxiety, depression, unhappiness etc. rather than dealing with it.

They allow us to feel a temporary confidence or happiness, but the effect is usually one of borrowed time. Often the unhappiness or anxiety returns even more strongly once the effects wear off.

Drink and drugs can cause psychological problems by themselves. Alcohol can commonly cause depression; drugs can also cause depression, or can trigger anxiety or even psychosis (loss of reality).
3-Social Harms

Drink and drugs are often seriously expensive, so uncontrolled use can lead to financial problems.

You can quite easily end up in trouble with the law. Although drinking alcohol is of course legal, it can lead to other actions such as assault and driving when drunk which are not. Similarly, although the law may turn a blind eye to personal use of certain drugs, this attitude is not consistent. Sentences for any supplying can be heavy and unpredictable. Any conviction for drink or drugs offences may severely limit the opportunities open to you in the future.

Pronounced use of drink or drugs tends to rigidly define social groups, so it may limit your circle of friends. Continual or large-scale use of alcohol has a bad effect on most people's sex-life.

Sorry, incest and especially rape are global problems and nearly ALWAYS stem from an authority figure's addiction to exerting power over subordinates. Alcohol only aggravates this psychopathic tendency. Every culture that practices child marriage is complicit in perpetuating this psychopathy, and Europe is far from the worst. There are not a multiplicity of extremist groups, let alone ordinary citizens, in Europe with the intent and capability of engaging in mass kidnappings and rapes, not are they ordinary tools of statecraft.

I quit 3 years ago and started investing the money I saved into other things. That's my addiction now.

Good Job sticking to the cleansing and staying away from the booze Jeff!

Keep it up jeff youre doing great. Growth and transcendence...peace love and happiness
