Good evening, everyone! My name is Anibal Mijangos
These past few days have been interesting to say the least.
For those of you who don't know, I recently got a position as a salesperson at a major solar company. The solar company is a publically traded company on the New York Stock Exchange; so they know what they're doing and are here to stay.
Honestly, I'm excited about the position because I know I will learn a lot from the mentors and training. The problem that I have with the position is the lead generation strategy.
In order to get the attention of the consumer, we are told to go out into a specified residential area and knock on as many doors as possible in the hopes of generating some leads.
Now.... for all of you homeowners out there, I'm sure you have experienced some kind of door to door sales person. It has come to the point that most people don't even open the door anymore! One of these past few days, I knocked on 15 doors without receiving any form of communication from the homeowner. After knocking on one door, I could hear a child telling their mother someone was at the door just for the mother to say, "leave it alone."
I know it's an effective strategy for some but I really do believe it depends on the area and the time of day. I really do not believe that the door to door approach is the answer to all business owner's prayers when it comes to lead generation. If not done properly, a whole area can be exhausted of potential leads because of an annoying salesperson.
It has become so frustrating to know that I have to go back out the next day and spend a few hours knocking on doors in the hopes of getting at least 1 lead. 1 LEAD people! Most of the time, I feel like I'm wasting my time doing it. In modern times, how is it that we are not taught more effective marketing strategies?
Honestly, this post has kind of become a vent post.
I have learned a lot about solar and the different programs that this company offers the homeowner. I really do believe that going solar is a great way to save money long term and so it's really a no brainer for people to get the panels on their roof. Especially if there are no upfront costs!
The issue is that I just need people to listen what I have to say and how they can benefit from our amazing programs. But once I knock on their door, I feel like the person instantly raises their defenses and it becomes difficult to gain their trust.
Of course, that's just me.
This is why I'm going to start doing some other kinds of marketing for lead generation. Online of course. If you have any ideas on solar lead generation, please let me know. I'm all ears :D
I'll keep you guys updated with what happens. Hopefully, good news to come!
Neighborhoods, where older people live that are retired, is good during the day. Set a goal and knock 100 doors a day, do a conversion ratio to see how many leads you are setting after a week. Door to Door
till there ain't now more! Rinse and repeat. Also, be very educated and kowledgable in what you are offering and speak with high confidence.
Thanks for your comment! Since I posted this, a lot has happened. I won't get into the details, but I'm no longer focusing my energy on solar right now. I do have my license and will most likely revisit the industry in the future, but I'm going to be working on my network marketing business for right now. :)
Best of luck to you and if you ever get back in Door to Door, feel free to follow me, I have been doing it my whole life. I'm a weirdo i know, haha
No, man. I'll follow you right now! Haha. I can still learn from you and from your experience. I'll admit that I didn't like going door to door, but I did learn a lot from that experience and I'm grateful for going through it. I was just looking for an opportunity that paid me based off of my efforts and that it had leverage over my time, money, and people. And of course, that it was based on residual income. I found that in network marketing and so I'm happy with it :)
Direct mailings to the homeowner are the go but i would look at solar as an investment.I live in australia and have a 5 kw system and it pays for half our usage.
now what other investment can you invest say 5,000.00 and have a yearly return of 20 percent per year for 20 years.
Figures are probably different in other countries but you get my drift.
Invest 5000.00 and get paid 1000.00 per year for 20 years this is what you are selling....the mind boggles

I've been in your position let me off your suggestion that work for me if you don't have gimp on your computer get gimp GMP or gimp it's a graphic design software program in the cool thing with gimp is that you can take the background color from the brochure and you can lay it over the phone numbers and contact information right beneath the background color then you can type in your contact information so that is the only contact information on the brochure you handout and clients that are interested in solar panels I have half a kilowatt myself will call the only phone number on the brochure that is your phone number and when they call that phone number you can schedule a sit-down appointment with them so that instead of a cold call you will have a warm customer. Now instead of knocking on the door which people do get annoyed at what you do is you woke up to the mailbox or you walk up to the door and you simply put the brochure in the mailbox or you slip it through the slot in the mail door now this won't necessarily reduce the foot traffic you're going to have to put down you're going to have to burn some foot rubber but it will reduce the tension level in your sales and it will actually increase in my calculations your turnaround rate by about 50% and it will increase your customer interest by about 20% so try it out once you're in the door with the warm client for a sit-down meeting you can go over the details of the solar panel opportunity and introduce them to your company and that's how you close the deal I wish you the best of luck little bro
Thank you very much for the feedback! I agree with what you said. I'd have a higher chance of a sale with a warm market. So it would make sense to try to convert cold prospects to warm prospects. With that though, sounds like i'll have to make an investment in paper marketing or some kind of social media marketing. I've already started changing my marketing strategy, but i'll continue knocking until I have something that works.
I wish you the best. I have a friend in Albuquerque who sells solar panels and inverters and solar power batteries on Craigslist to subsidize his income. He is a brick-and-mortar operation that he purchases a case of solar panels at a time but it pays off for him he gets quite a lot of sales to Craigslist
