I am sure we are all aware of the debate currently raging back and forth on steemit on the upvoting of spam comments. I thought I would make a short animation! It's funny how they claim they are all innocent isn't it?

I have been really patient on here over the months with it. I have said we have language barriers here and cultural differences many many times.....
But it is honestly getting to me now.
I have posted in Russian and translated both ways, and made the effort..... it is not too much to ask others to do some of the same.
Make some effort people. I am admitting now, the thousands of crap accounts with crap effort and crap comments are bothering me, and I have been telling them the same lately.
THEN.... there is the intentional accounts spamming and draining the rewards pool along with this all.
Exactly mate. I have been patient like you. But when your posts have comments which are just copy and pasted into hundreds of posts or dropping a link to their posts or worse saying follow me we can help each other you think ffs!!!
And then the reward pool swallowers. Thems the ones that are the worst!

At first when I was fresh in the water flapping around and posting away I did not mind it that much. Now that I have been here a while I realized it upsets me more and more each time I see this kind of spammy comments.
I have told myself not to let it bother me that much...
BUT THEN, I came across a user named EHUJRA I will not add the @ in fear of being bombarded with flags. This really got me furious. What he is doing is pure abuse. Made me so angry. I asked myself why do I get so angry... once again I realized it's because I have started to really appreciate and care for this platform. It has helped me a lot and will always be a fun hobby for me. Learning all the ins and outs. Testing things, communicating with cool people. The most fun I had in a long time and I am earning a bit by doing it all. People like these will give this site a bad rep and we need to take more action against them.

I'm a newbie. I started posting my first article last 18th of July. I learned that in order to interact with other Steemians, you have to leave a comment in their posts. Your animation is telling me that we should stop posting unnecessary comments? Is that correct? If I'm wrong, can you please elaborate? Thank you in advance. :)

Oh not at all. Commenting is to be encouraged! But at the same time you should only really comment if you are going to add something. Saying nice post for example will not win you any fans.
However this post isn't really about that. It is about people upvoting their own spammy contents for the money. Excellent.g. putting no effort in.

Oh man, what are those ones like!! I have been frankly quite baffled by them!!
Some things defy understanding. Like people telling you how wonderful your lengthy post is after its only been up for 30 seconds.
I love comments, but I would prefer them to be genuine, or if not then at least clever in some way.
I feel exactly the same way. There is nothing better than a comment that suggests the peon has read your post.
Recently I have seen a lot of the ones that go up within seconds of a lengthy post saying great photos or love your stuff and you know they can't possibly have even lightly skimmed it.
Yes "great photo" I've seen that one a lot, within the first minute or so. I got that to one of m posts from a few days ago. It contained one photo, and about 1500 words. Within 30 seconds in comes the comment "Great photos" (plural). What about my words, do they all suck do they? No response.
All the words passed them by!
I have seen that on posts where there is a great piece of fiction with one header photo. It's always a dreadful shame. One well written comment is so much more likely to garner votes and a follow but no, the easy way is taken.
Enjoyed. So am I missing it or are we saying the comments are spam? I thought the big controversy going around was about spam posts such as people just stealing from say youtube putting up a short clip or something to that affect? Personally, I like the comments. What am I missing here or am I over thinking it...............
Oh no, this isn't about copy and paste spam efforts.
This is about people with a decent amount of SP putting spam comments on posts like enjoyed or even in the worst cases random numbers and then voting up their own comments with all their voting power to get rewards. There is nothing inherently wrong with voting for your own comment if you have a reason but some of the spammers don't even vote on the posts they are spamming on, they only vote on their own comments over and over and over again.
So yes, you might be over thinking it a tad :0)
Ah! Well that's something I wasn't aware of. That's pretty shitty. Thank you for bringing it to light for me as now I get it. I'm in the boat of not for it too. So what do we do? Flag the comments? I suppose I'll see this as I can't recall running into as of yet and I read lot's of comments.
It is a bit rubbish. You probably wouldn't see them as they do them on old posts or little known posts. You will run into it eventually and shake your head
I like this post, it gives more learning and educating all steemians. During my first week of doing stuff here like posting, comenting and up voting. I saw an easy way of earning like upvoting my own comments. I just want to admit that at first I was doing a spam not realizing that it was a spam. Upon reading those post like this one I was enlightened and change those ways. I admit that I did spam before and I also insisted that I was innocent. I think there are many that are doing spam ways without realizing it is spaming. There are innocents especialy newbies...perhaps there are people here that arr already knew and claimed to be innocent.

Made me laugh but this is a very serious issue faced by a great many Steemians in their blog comments, it is very irritating to say the least. Culprits spamming will quickly p!ss off members and will most likely get flagged and lose reputation....think first, is spamming working for you.

I do not understand this discussion. On Steemit you can make comments and comments are paid. So it's normal that spam is done. Just do not pay comments or put a limit on comments and end delirium. Very simple! Actually this thing likes many ....

I think in this case I am referring to the people who are just putting comments with numbers on for example (seriously) and upvoting their own comments full power each time and never voting other people. So done people see it as robbing the rewards pool
Ah ... the pathetic people who vote for their comments! Some are in this discussion to complain ..... I have read of a proposal that abolishes this thing. For me, all payments to the comments must be abolished!
I don't mind them being paid for but maybe upvoting your own should be!!
OK! But then we do not complain! But I would set a limit ... Max 10 comments off your billboard. There are people who make 100 comments a day. All smart things to pay? Nooooo ... these are the serial spammers that are on all the boards to comment on everything. And their reputation rises. Though they say banality and obvious things.

Nah!!! Its all subjective. Most people do hate it when people just randonly comment utter tripe on their posts in the hope of their comment getting upvotes thought, So that is generally considered spammy. Apart from that it is up to you to decide but when you see it you will know it!

Thank you @meesterboom for the animation! It will hopefully demonstrate to new minnows entering the Steemit platform why we do not appreciate spam comments. The animation demonstrated one aspect of why it is wrong to post spam comments. In terms of monetary value, such actions are abusive and simply wrong. I am sure many serious writers who spend time thinking, writing and editing their posts before posting feel that their work at least deserve to be read by viewers who are going to end up leaving comments. It is offensive to see those abusing the reward pool and not show any appreciation for writers and curators who care about what this platform means.
One thing I have been doing is resteeming all posts similar to these that represent our disapproval of abusers on this site as well as posts that assist new minnows in understanding the rules and tips on how to use this platform well so that it can be beneficial to us all. I am hoping that since your animation made a clear visual point of the consequences of spamming, that it will reach those who do not understand the rules due to the language barriers. We definitely need more visuals like this to promote the rules and integrity of this site.
One thing I have noticed is that once in a while, I lose followers that way and I believe it is because they are spamming themselves, who needs them as followers anyway. I also like to check who comments on post like this so that I can add new people to follow.
If I may suggest a post from you on how to make animations like this or easier ones would be great! I would love to learn as I am not the most tech-savvy person and not familiar with animation tools.

There is nowhere to start other than just going for it. I would suggest a very short one of about two or three seconds first with not much in it. It is quite difficult when you first start

Really though, I don't know if he's being serious or he's just trolling. You could really feel the sincerity in their words sometimes. LOL! Now thankfully you know I am a follower and NOT a spammer. I am so tired of this as wel...It actually discourages a bit of posting, so as not to get spammed... I hope steemit can make a "steemit Etiquette" on what is good and what shouldn't be followed.

The suicide part is not having direct ads, although the promoted content and the system as is now, actually encourage advertisement in a sense and help mitigate some of this problem.
I am of two minds about ads. Part of me things that unobtrusive ones might be ok and the other thinks that it might mean more bots in an attempt to game the ads
If Advertisers will have to buy STEEM in order to advertise, guess what will happen to its price.
