New Year Resolutions: How many did you fulfill?

in #life7 years ago

Hello great people. Today i shall be looking at a very popular things most people do whenever the year is about to wrap up.

It is not new to hear people ask: What are your new year resolutions? They practically think that there are things you did wrongly in the just concluding (or concluded) year and think you should write ways you can avoid them down and probably look at new ways to achieve some designed goals.

What do you think about new year resolutions? Do people follow it to the end? Or they just write them for writing sake so that people would think they always map out the goals they intend to achieve?

New year resolutions contain list of things that happened in the year that just ended or about to end. They are those things people write down to cross-check their steps in the new year. It could be to change their sense of dressing, undesired behaviors, set out goals which they want to achieve and to improve on their 'self'. They are to guide the person in his/her new journey in a new year. Basically, they are written promises made to yourself on how to improve your life in the new year.

The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year—though for them the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted. source

Sometimes i asked: what makes a 'year' new? Is it because the Gregorian Calendar ends at 31 of December or because the world is actually new in the sense 'new'? Do not forget that we have different time zones. Central African Time is one hour ahead of West African Time. New York is 5-6 hours behind Nigeria time. So when is new year? The time Nigeria celebrates her own or when New York celebrates her's?

Also, While Gregorian Calendar is the most accepted, their are other calendars for instance the Islamic Calendar. So what makes a new year 'new'?

So to the resolution proper, i have seen many people tell me this is my new year resolutions. I wont do this, i wont do that. Mostly, these people are able to monitor and carry out these laid down dos and don'ts. But for how long? I say mostly three months! Yeah! Some of them just give up, some felt let me also try new things, some are left helpless to repeat those things they said they wont do.

Life itself is simple but complex to live in. So why do we want to make it more complex? Writing down something in a piece of paper and making it control you (because practically that is what the paper is doing) is absurd to me. It is not as if you have understood life and felt i must do this to get this or i must avoid this in order not to get this.

Things in reality are more complicated than that. The idea of writing or conceptualizing an idea or ideas and making them rule you as an individual is beyond my comprehension.

So what am i saying? New year resolutions are just fairy-tales or science fiction written by an imaginary director to perfect life and everything that is in it. Hardly do people fulfill 20% of those things they wrote down as their new year resolution.

It is good to have new ways of looking into life! You can see life from new angles, try new (positive) things. Do away from things you consider bad and adopt those you think are good. But do not write down your life in a piece of paper or any diary!

I don't write New Year resolutions. I never did. They are perfunctory and never amount to anything. Evaluation of oneself should be on a regular basis and one need not wait for a whole year to do the right thing. So if I am threading a wrong path, need I wait for a whole Year to retrace my steps ? No! You STOP! Remember that bad habits formed over time don't just go away but needs a lot of conscientious effort on one's part to unload. To me, new Year resolutions are balderdash, they most often do not work out.

Ma, you did wonderfully well with this response. I have low VP but this deserve to be upvoted! Thanks for this!

Me, i am also guilty of this New Year resolution... No matter how hard u try, u still find urself doing it directly or indirectly. I know how many times I've said I won't drink again but I still drink once in awhile

Yeah! That is just the reality i was talking about. It is hard to be guided by a piece of paper. Life is not like mathematics with a formula. Thanks brother!

Thanks for sharing, so lovely

Loving this man. Very neatly made post! I think a resolution is only a resolution if dedicated action is taken over at least a year period :)

Thanks for this! Talk soon.

Yeah you are right! Thanks for your time!

We dont write these things to govern us, we cannot rule every aspect of our life because some things dont depend on us, but that small portion dt depends on us we try to do it well

We write these things to improve our selves, to grow, to become better versions of ourselves.
A book (48 Laws of power) called it Re-creating ourself.
I think we owe it to ourselves and the universe to be the best we can be, and one of the ways we can track our progress is by writing it down...on paper(or note app 😀)

You are still saying people write resolutions which i never disputed. You claim why they wrote it was to better themselves which my post also mentioned. The crux of this post is are these things fulfilled? How many have been able to carry out those things in 'paper'? If they were meant to guide them, how come some repeat same thing as @sbamsoneu rightly said?

How do you think a tailored way of living ever works? I will do this 'thick', i will not do this 'cancel'!! Isn't that funny? What percentage of your resolutions have you been able to fulfill @sussan

Maybe you havent met people who stick to theirs, I have them as friends and it keeps me going.
most of them are better than me actually.
I can say I've done 50%.
I came across an old jotter in april and was really impressed with myself

Lols! A tailored life... I can't imagine what is was like. 50% still not good you know 😂

Thanks for your contribution.

I think 50% is good compared to the people you talking about who dont go through

Maybe it has something to do with being realistic.
For eg, I like to drink, I cant just write no drinking entirely, I'd write something like, drink once a week, twice in a month, smtn like dt. Habits dont disappear like that.

Sorry for talking plenty, this was kinda sensitive to me

Lols! You still haven't told the readers if such things have been fulfilled, can be fulfilled and how?

Thanks.

I told you how already...
Self discipline and setting realistic targets

I didnt fulfill half, not because i was inconsistent, i found new ones to be better, right tere and then i made new ones and am eagerly pursuing them.Only God can make me fulfill them to the latter.Nice post, hope to get back for upvote

Lol
I make resolutions but usually not in the beginning of the year.
Some i fulfill,some i dont.

Its not wrong to make one,we should improve by actually putting them to action

We're not particularly fond of "resolutions" as such, because they are too much of an "all-or-nothing" deal, inflexible and rigid. So for those who actually want to try something and are tired of failing, why not skip the resolutions altogether and try these New Year's Intentions instead. Happy New Year 2018!
