“Freely ye have received, freely give.”

in #lighttheworld7 years ago (edited)

The first of 25 ways to #LightTheWorld in 25 days leading up Christmas.

Instead of waiting to receive or giving only on Christmas lets find ways to give to others now and always.

The #LightTheWorld campaign website makes the following suggestions for Day 1

Jesus made it clear that everything we have is a gift freely given from God. We should be grateful for all that we have and be willing to give just as freely to others.

WAYS YOU CAN GIVE FREELY

  • What can you sacrifice today to make someone else’s life better?
Put down the electronics and spend some quality time with family or a friend.

  • Would someone less fortunate appreciate something you have?
Make an anonymous donation to someone who's struggling to make ends meet.

  • How can you show your gratitude to someone who has positively affected you?
Send the person a thoughtful thank-you card acknowledging the ways he or she has helped you.

These are the suggestions the site gives to help prompt us to a little introspection and inspiration around how we could reach out to those around us. I am sure there are thousands of ways we could reach out.

Each of us live in our own set of circumstances surrounded by those with their own set of needs.

Take a little time to think over who you could help out and in what way.

In the comments please don't share with us necessarily what you did, but how it made you feel.

@hanshotfirst will be doing tomorrow's challenge from more secular, less religious perspective to demonstrate how all can participate no mater what their religions persuasion or lack thereof.

Both of these will serve as an example and promotion of how to post regarding the day's challenge. The 3rd day or Sunday's post will be open to the community to post to promote or share your take on the day's video and challenge.

I will be monitoring the #lighttheworld hashtag and will be throwing all spare voting power in that direction, to comments and posts.

If you decide to participate using your own top level post, please just insert the days video, theme and link, as I have done. The rest is up to you and lets see how creative and positive a contribution we can all make.

I haven't devised a formula for exactly how I will be voting yet, would like to get a good look at the contributions first.

Besides lots of smaller votes, we may decide to vote up the best contribution to the hashtag for Day 3. Then the winner of that day would be requested to select the winning post in the hashtag on Day 6 when the cycle returns to the community contribution.

I will however be monitoring and voting within the tag on all days, not just 3, 6, 9, 11 etc.

Wow. I literally discovered Steemit less than an hour ago and this is the first post I've seen. Mindblowing how different this is than other social media. I don't fully understand what's going on here, but I'm excited to be a part of it. I haven't done anything yet, but I'll report back when I do.

Ah. Yes, that's how Steemit actually is. There's something about this platform that makes people want to be positive in a way that is unmatched elsewhere on the internet. You will see a lot of positivity like this from @gavvet and others.

Welcome to the community! Steemit is hands down the most encouraging and supportive community on the internet. There truly is nothing like it anywhere :)

Wonderful to meet you!

I can say the same, I just made my account yesterday

Well, you were in the spot I am now 22 hours ago. What have you learned? xD

By the way, our God bless you all.

I saw an old lady who was homeless on the streets of Oxford in UK where I live. She was sitting on the pavement feverishly knitting hat after hat that she placed on the pavement in front for people to buy. What a fighting spirit, I thought. She was not just begging she was trying desperately to earn her next meal. I gave her some money which lifted my spirits but still felt sad that an old lady was forced to live on the streets in the freezing cold, as winter draws in. Sadly, this is becoming more and more common.

The more evil that is prevalent the more opportunity there is for good.

I fully agree, @gavvet, and have noticed, spiritually, how attentive the forces of darkness can be, how they rush to answer our ill-conceived wishes. Also, as we progress towards the Light, how jealous shadows redouble their efforts...

Thank you, for sharing these noble reminders to help others as we've been helped. When as a struggling writer, I find myself worrying about tomorrow, making a steady income or having health insurance, I am reminded of these luminous words, and my heart is more at ease:

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them."

Peace, all ways, Yahia

You said it. Precisely this is what the Lord said would happen; when evil abounds, love over-abounds!

Your write up is a great one but it stirs a lot of questions.

  1. I know it i very good to give but don't you think giving can make others lazy?
  2. over here in my country Nigeria some Hausa's has taking begging as an occupation but i usually wonder most of them have two hands and legs with a brain but refuse to do something meaningful for their life.
if i'm to suggest to you that some times when giving make sure you give something that can worth more than money, clothes and shows to a person in need... maybe an idea is what the person needs. thank you.

The same Teacher that teaches us to give also advises us not to "cast our pearls before swine", therefore wisdom and discernment should be applied to our giving.

Awesome start! I can't wait to see what the community contributes.

I need to show my kids this after school today so we can start "the good deed days" (as my daughter calls them).

You're up next, lets have some of her input on one or two of them too.

I remember this from last year! This was awesome. I have quite a few people that might want to participate in this challenge, so I am spreading the word.

Giving should come from the heart and not because Abel gave so I have to give. Giving is a sacrifice, which is between you and God when u start to tell people what u did it is no more giving but bragging. When Jesus healed the 10 lepers He told them to go and show themselves to the priest and not go tell the priest i Jesus healed u. Another example Peter and John with the man at the beautiful gate, when Peter commanded him to rise and walk he didn't say go tell people it is me. Your good deeds would speak volumes even in your absence. One principle I know is no matter how much u give u can never lack. We are in the Christmas season and the end of the year , I urge everyone to touch a life before this year runs out.

Matt 6 vs 1-4

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven. “Thus, when you give to the needy, sound no trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.''

Just as Jesus Christ admonished us, we should not try to seek glory or praise by broadcasting what we've done. Let's leave all the glory to God alone, and enjoy of His blessings.

I support @gavvet idea of not telling what we did. Telling how we felt while and after doing it is much much better. It would motivate people to want to feel that way, and that should be the right mindset behind giving.

Generally speaking giving is an act of the heart. And in the context of Faith giving is an act of worship. As such giving should be kept "private." While Christmas is a great opportunity to give both as an act of the heart and act of worship we should remember to keep the "good stories/good feelings" to ourselves. God knows and sees everything we do around us. My two cents.

Thank you, I feel the same way: "when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.'' Bless you, @stellastella. Pity, like humility, is endless and ennobling. We are One.

Oh, a big thanks to you @yahialababidi, and bless you too. Am glad you feel the same way. We sure are one. The moment we take in the fact that we are one, this world will be a far much better place. If I don't help my neighbor, he is still the one that would probably turn to be the one stealing things in the neighborhood, and we feel the effect. So at the end of the day, our lives are intertwined. Our destinies are intertwined. This is why we have to help each other.

Wow. Thanks for this. I wilk really strategize on how to go about this. I need for there to be maximun impact. God bless you.
Each of us has something to offer. We can give our money and our time to charity, be a friend to someone who is sick or lonely, do volunteer work, or be a peacemaker, teacher or minister. We may give unselfishly of our time to our spouse, children or parents. We may choose a service-oriented occupation, or we may just do our everyday jobs with integrity and respect for others.

It would seem that the more we give to others, the poorer we become, but just the opposite is true! Service to others brings meaning and fulfillment to our lives in a way that wealth, power, possessions and self-centered pursuits can never match. As Jesus said,

For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give -- large or small -- will be used to measure what is given back to you." (Luke 6:38)
I want to use this medium to point out something we should be conscious of while doing the outreach.
Sincere Motives
Our good deeds should be motivated by a sincere desire to help others. Public recognition should not be the goal.
Matthew 6:1-2
"Be careful not to do your 'acts of righteousness' before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. "So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
John 15:12
This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.
Matthew 5 :16
In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Mark 10:21
And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Gavvet,
Thank you for the inspiration! I was just thinking how tight things are financially. With the holidays coming up, how would I express my love and appreciation to my family and friends. Thank you for reminding me, that a simple thank you is the light beaming on the heart of another. I have work to do. #lighttheworld #loveandlight

Yup, its about more than just presents and spending money

Yes it is and we learn this all the time. Please read my recent post about one way it happens to people. You can be one way one day and another the next. Like a flip of a switch. Perhaps this is just another reason I was lead to do steemit.

Thank you to everyone for upvoting my reply. I will search out the old lady living on the streets when I go into work next week and give her all the money from your upvotes. Peace to you all as we approach Christmas

Awesome,

From Matt 12 vs 41-44

''And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”''

I support the fact that we should not talk about what we've done to help those around us, but rather how we feel.
To a person, $1 might mean $1million,while to another $1million might mean $1.
What matters the most is you giving your best at your level, that's what God checks.
To God it's not about quantity of what you give, but about quality of what you give - what it means to you.

My daughter has to do a presentation on philanthropy for the Girl Scouts. She went to practice with her partner today and they are going to add the lighttheworld vending machine to their presentation. I didn't even suggest it. My wife showed the girls and they loved it!

What an awesome concept!! gave me goosebumps!!
I have been thinking of doing something in the same lines with photography - I am from South Africa so I see poor people on a daily basis it makes me sad to see how unfair the monetary system is towards the uneducated and underprivileged - But it gives me hope to see concepts like this and to see how giving the majority of people on earth actually is - they just need to be lead in the right direction and giving should become as easy as purchasing an item from a vending machine ! Life is so busy and everyone just want to keep their own lives afloat so making it easier to give will definitely benefit charity organisations and their beneficiaries

Light The World, eh? An interesting and heartwarming challenge. I will surely be taking a look at @hanshotfirst's secular version; benevolence and the spirit of helping others is and should always be a human(ist) thing, not just the province of relgion. Any path that leads to us making the lives of our fellow humans better is a worthy one that we should all walk.

Thanks for this, @gavvet.

A comment i saw on here cant be further from the truth-the more evil there is in the world ,the more there is chance to do good. Thanks for raising awareness to the plight of poverty stricken people the world over

It’s more a holiday message, but once I was at a conference and the food was flowing. I was a pig. I ate two sandwiches and for some reason made myself a third. I was like wtf what is wrong with me. So I took that sandwhich and left the conference. I scowered the streets and looked for any homeless person to give that big fat sandwhich too. I was lucky and found someone to offload the excessive abuse of food. I realized how much we throw out. I always remember what I did, and wish others would follow suit. I love that I did that, because it left a lasting memory of how much we have and take for granted. I don’t have a christmas tree but I do light up the chanukia. Not hijacking anyone’s holiday spirit. Good is good and we can all encourage that. So happy holidays to all. - good luck with you initiative!

Can i ask, how do you actually reach out for help, or even acknowledge that you need help? As a student, things can often get pretty hard, especially when food is hard to afford, but i wouldn't ask for help.
Of course this is extremely, relative, as i live in Denmark, and therefore is extremely well off. I am very grateful that i am able to study and live here.

However, i can not wait until the day where i make enough money to actually help other people. Helping out is absolutely wonderful and it gives such a joy to do. In Denmark, the homeless are able to sell a magazine called "hus forbi". If they register as homeless, they can buy it for 8 dkk, and sell it for 20, and keep the change (i think that is the price they buy it for at least). Those people are really giving an effort, and are more often than not extremely nice. I buy those magazines when i get the chance, i think it's a wonderful project.
I just hope those people have shelter, because it's getting very cold.

I was just thinking this morning- What does The Spirit of Christmas really mean. THIS is what the Spirit is. It's giving, and doing. Selflessly.

A handful of years ago my now ex was a veterinary student doing his internship at a popular animal hospital chain.

He started bringing home dogs and cats who were on the day's kill list- he could not allow them to be euthanized because of a humans laziness or abuse.

This morphed into what my boys names Rehealth. Reheart. Rehome.

We began taking in the serious cases of extreme burn and abuse. We would care for the medical first, then teach them to trust and love, then find a good forever home for them.

This also morphed into helping the human survivors of abuse. Many of our pets have gone to a human survivor- they understand each other and help each other heal.

I am a single mother of three with no child support or family. I struggle daily, that is a fact. But I can't not help.

Most of the medical supplies and prescriptions are donated by the veterinarians I work with, however I cover all the other expenses.

One of my kittens went to a woman who survived an attempted murder from the hands of her husband. She lost her arm. The kitten had lost his toes, part of his jaw, and ear from a man's abuse. They send me Christmas cards each year- two years ago they moved to Paris and are enjoying their lives, healing and content.

I do this not to get rich- that will not happen in this field. I do this because of the lives I save- both human and animal. There is no word for the feeling in my heart when I watch an untrusting kitten finally come out from hiding after weeks under my couch, then weeks later finally trust enough to curl up on your lap- and that first purr. That first purr after months of growls and claws... There is no word.

Then, watching the loving bond form between the kitten and his new owner, who is suffering as well...

They truly help each other heal and not only survive- but thrive. And they help me know there is hope in this world. There can be goodness after tragedy.

Thank you for starting this, great idea <3

Christmas time is the shopping season...
But whats really great abou christmas is the family time :)

And this is somewhat what I randomly did today. It was not nothing big, but spending time with the closest , sharing emotions with unknown persons and talk to them gave me a thrill. After whole week of buissnes things, I think that I may be missing the simplest. Thanks for sharing love with us ;P

I love this idea @gavvet. I have this passion to help others and this gives me a feeling of fulfillment that I have shared with someone in need may it be financially or not as long as I know I have helped them I am happy. Thank you for this great idea.

Luke 6:38

38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

everything made for humanity and cooperation is beautiful.

@gavvet, You always giving us to great conversation. This time you posting absolutely brilliant discussing topic. I`m really appreciating told about Christmas title. Christmas valid only giving somethings to others. I can't hope received any gift from another. "Jesus made it clear that everything we have is a gift freely given from God"- I really agreed your point. As you know what's the Christmas real meaning. Jesus always try to giving gifts for poor peoples. Christmas can be a season of great joy. It is a time of God showing His great love for us. It can be a time of healing and renewed strength. Christmas is when we celebrate the birth of the Christ child. God sent His Son, Jesus, into the world to be born. His birth brought great joy to the world. Shepherds, wise men, and angels all shared in the excitement of knowing about this great event.
We always try to give our help to others. May be will listen another persons sadness, we will help other persons to work start or finishing their work with use our man power or brain power.
most of peoples sacrifice with Christmas season. They will do lightning, fire works, enjoyable parties with beer, whiskeys etc... I cannot acceptable those tasks, bcoz most of humans suffering from without money and without happiness, success. I accept money not a life. Money can't buy our heartiest feelings.
I would thank for all with appreciated my life things and wait all my success of passed my life. we should take some steps to make the world better for all and must watch video and take some actions to keep going.

I really appreciated your # #LighTheWorld campaign. Its really great point for provide as you told topic. I wish you the success for giving more valuable topics to the steemians.
Resteemed.

This is a great idea and as much as I give, I’m not sure how I would go about sharingmy feelings about what I do. What I love about tournament post is that so many people deny Christ or his existences and sacrifice. Today. So many people do not want to discuss spirituality or great teachers of any kind. Maybe Buddha and it’s tied into yoga classes. At any rate, thank you for posting about Jesus, as even though he wasn’t born this time of year, it’s still that time of year for giving and showing love. But then again, shouldn’t everyday be about that? Happy holidays! 🙌🏾

Thank you firstly for to you @gavvet, for great inspiration title sharing. I strongly and powerfully believe that Christmas is our better holiday for kids with us satisfy our life. I have already thinking how will my family assist another sadness family. If we have ability to help them it will be real progress our Christmas. Thank you for reminder to you. @lighttheworld is better campaign and we will do most task for provide.

Actually we are surviving in this world with the blessing of other's service to us whether it is a sweeper or a doctor ,co-operation of all helping us in keeping our existence alive . So we are grateful to all. For showing our gratefulness physical gift is not essential our warm hearted thanks to them is enough . By confessing their contribution in making our lives comfortable we should show them our respect and love, gratitude and affection. Not only the contributor but the helpless and poor also should be loved by all because according to Samuel Taylor Coleridge in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner
“He prayeth best, who loveth best
All things both great and small;
For the dear God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all.”

Awesome post!! This time of year has always been my favorite! Just the spirit of it all is so great! We really do all need to look out for one another!

2corinthians 8 vs 1-24

'We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord, begging us earnestly for the favor of taking part in the relief of the saints— and this, not as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then by the will of God to us. '

There is no one that can not participate in this giving. The members of the Macedonian church were not too financially buoyant, but yet they gave.
It's not about the quantity of the gift, but the heart behind the gift.

What an amazing post bro ;) i really like it you have really impressed me whene you have take this subject of #LightTheWorld thank you @gavvet and for me i thing that the main thing that we have need for lighting the world is by lighting our brains starting with educate and give the good information to each one of us so in this way we will light the world in the nearest years that will come i hope that you understand my point of view because i always think in this method if you would change the world start with each one of the peoples that make this world

This is a wonderful way to make life better for some struggling people, just like the post that I just read about the lady who was so thankfull that her children were fine her house burnt down. She is so thankful for having them yet losing everything.

I love christmas season because its a time for reaching out to those in need. God bless you richly. I love this goal. There is no doubt that poverty’s reach is both widespread and devastating today. God’s people cannot be indifferent toward those in need, because His expectations for us in regard to taking care of His poor are woven throughout the entirety of Scripture. For example, look at the Lord’s words about the goodness of King Josiah in Jeremiah 22:16: “He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me, declares the LORD?” And Moses instructed his people how to treat the poor and needy: “Give generously to [them] and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to” (Deuteronomy 15:10).This sentiment is perfectly captured in Proverbs 14:31: “Whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”

Conversely, there is another part to this verse: “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker.” Proverbs is, in fact, filled with Scripture clearly showing that God loves the poor and is offended when His children neglect them
The New Testament is equally clear as to how we are to take care of the poor. One verse that nicely summarizes our expected charity is found in the first Epistle of John: “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with action and in truth” (1 John 3:17–18). Equally important is Matthew 25:31–46.

Acts 4 vs 32-35

'Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common. And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all. There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.'

This is what was God's original intention , that none should want. But yet a lot of people are lacking because we have not given out to them.
Rather than pilling up gifts in this season, let's heed to God's word and help those in need. That's the true essence of Christianity - the true essence of Christmas.

Outstanding! I love the idea to only post how it makes you feel instead of broadcasting what you did. Merry Christmas! 🎄

This is just awesome. Thank you for bringing this up. I really like you and all your works.
You have a mindset of really inspiring and benefiting those out there. Living in Afeica around Christmas time can numb us to the realities outside our world of abundance and excess. Don’t lose sight of how fortunate we are. Most of the people in the world live off less than $10 a day. You can bet they aren’t stressing over Christmas lists; they’re likely focused on where their next meal will come from. In the United States, millions of people live below the poverty line. Many children have a less-than-joyful Christmas because their parents are absent, in jail or can’t afford presents.
not all about merry making. We must also spare time to reflect on the essence of the period which is the love of God for humanity. This unquantifiable love is summed up in the popular bible verse John 3: 16 “For God so loved the world that he gave us his only begotten son, that whosoever believeth in him will not perish but have eternal life.”When we ponder on God’s love for us, we too are encouraged to share love with others, to embrace peace and be our brother’s keeper.
James 2:14-17
What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

This is just too noble. I love steemit just for this. I didnt know we have gone this far. Reaching even those who are not on steemit. I have to be a part of this. Thank you for this initiative.
Matthew 25:35-40 “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? 38 And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.”
I was handing out Bible tracts once on a hot summer day and this man I gave one to was a self-professing atheist but you know what he did? He asked me to come into his house and cool off then he brought me a cold bottle of water. I then told him that you actually did this for Jesus. He thought, “What? What do you mean?” Then I repeated these verses to him and he was amazed at how Jesus looks at what we do for others as doing it to Him. I think I made this man think. I hope it sunk deep into his conscience. Maybe I’ll see him in the kingdom. When you visit the sick, when you visit those in prison or write letters to them, when you give clothing to the poor, and when you give someone a drink…like this man did to me, you actually do it to Christ. This is a scripture i am always conscious of at all times.
For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’ Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’
This alone lets me know that everything i do for others, i do for christ. So that really keeps me going. Thank you @gavvet for this noble cause. I will be a part of it 100%

Türk ata sözü: veren el, alan elden üstündür. Fazla açıklama yapmaya gerek var mi? bay @gavvet. Senin bu paylaşımını görünce insanlığın bitmediğini bir kez daha anladim.

It is a great challenge.. Actually, we can appreciate what people do to us at least by making him smile and happy stay with us.. This month ia a great mont with full of bless of God. Beside, this December is also my birthday time. Thanks

What a fabulous way to shine the spot light on giving, everyday of the year is an opportunity to give to others.
Giving doesn't have to be materialistic it can can be just like this post sharing knowledge and putting a smile on someones face to feel good, which flows in to their day.

Beautiful what happens here, i love this. I vibrate with this good energy.
We all need to receive something from someone, however, giving makes you happier, because the happiness of the person receiving, contributes to you to fill your glass of happiness. Money and goods are necessary for a certain purpose, however the most precious gift that we can give is love, the world needs love. Even the most heartless one needs more love.

Over this time of year I think a lot of people is giving, and that is wonderful, but I do believe that not mentioning what you have done for others and just doing it and knowing how much it means to them is thanks enough and that feeling to give to others and make their lives a little easier must be safely tucked in our hearts. It is not what you do when others see you, it is what you do when nobody is watching. Inspiring post - great idea - cannot wait to read all the wonderful writing that will come from this
