This is what your post looked like to the outside world.
Hi little girl, here's a dollar! Let's be friends!
WTF???
Not all of us are troglodytes with no social connections and no life.
But you seem to think we are, and so you're discounting everyone's contributions in favor of a flawed theory of marketing that won't stand up and will cause this place to crumble around you.
What you're saying is that...
It's ok to bring a bunch of people here under false pretenses, and later allow them to become completely disillusioned because expectations were high, but it's ok because "more eyeballs = more dollars"?
Don't you realize that it actually dilutes the value of individual contributors and raises the noise floor? But it's ok because... Oh hey boobies!
What do you think the network effect will be when that information is made generally public?
What are you 12?
Here is what happens when you upvote crap.
More crap will come.
The people who really want to use this platform. The ones who feel passionate and will actually attract more users will leave soon, because they can't get attention. Attention they deserve because they are contributing to the signal and not the noise.
They feel cheated by a system that is rewarding per capital instead of per capita, all in a bid to lure new users in under false pretenses.
You won't get your bikini clad chicks here either, because they will know what a sexist twat you are for even spouting this kind of nonsense.
Then they will tell their friends to avoid this place because it's full of creepy guys who want to lure in young girls and their friends.
The net result is that the people you are trying to target will stay away and instead of a community comprised of well rounded, well connected normal people; You will end up with a large community of fat middle aged men pretending to be hot young girls so they can get upvotes and $$$.
Social media is a powerful tool. But all it takes is one actual well connected person, female or not, bikini clad or not, to cross post your blathering to twitter, facebook, instagram and the party is over for all of us.
The whales aren't whales because they are somehow smarter than us. They are whales because they invested early. They invested early because they believe that Dan & company can deliver something new and awesome and grow it into something incredible.
I don't actually disagree with that assessment. But there is a huge difference between coming up with an idea for a business and running it long term.
If you are correct in their motivations, then this indicates a serious problem with their ability to curate content in the spirit that they said they would and now there needs to be a way for the community to address that problem or the simply upstakes and go somewhere else.
I have some ideas to solve these problems. Ideas that I discuss here.
https://steemit.com/steemit/@williambanks/bot-warz-a-hybrid-approach
I like steem and I know it can be a powerful platform for good and an incredible tool for change.
But your posting shows everything that is wrong with the way things are setup here.
Do you realize that your post is summarized in one paragraph as "Hey it's ok we intentionally withhold money from quality content creators, because we're using it to lure in young girls?"
At least that's what my teenage daughter said when I showed it to her. Because of you, she's not signing up and she's warning her friends away from here. Can't say as I blame her.
Good Job @johnsmith !
So umm try again, maybe get to know some of the real people in the demographic you are trying to target and ask their opinion?
Ask your daughter, niece, wife, mom...
Would you rather get paid to create insightful commentary about subjects you feel passionate about, or would you rather be objectified and leered at by a bunch of fat nerds in their mother's basement?
Believe it or not, the pay is the same, so long as it's not being diluted under false pretenses.
Here is an effort that actually will bring in new users. Users in the demographic you claim to be seeking out.
https://steemit.com/news/@williambanks/hot-or-not-vote-to-have-your-favorite-coin-developer-profiled
Several of my friends are extremely well connected in the social media space. They have decided to launch a youtube show because I did the legwork and got them excited about this place. Then someone locked the doors.
Eitherway, they want to build something introducing new users to the power that this incredible tool really does have.
At the time I'm writing this comment, our post is older than yours by an hour.
We aren't asking for money or upvotes, we're just seeking topics of interest.
Yet that link has a total of $0.06 with 8 votes and 7 comments, while this one has 131 votes, 62 comments and $845.65
I'm not complaining here, but I am disappointed.
If there is no interest, you need to understand, that's just discouraging.
These are real people with 10's of thousands of social media connections and hundreds of real world connections.
They want to build an advertising platform to spread the word about steem. They'll do this because they realize the value of the platform. This is something that costs the steem community nothing and yet it's being ignored in favor of cheerleading the whales into doing something dishonest.
So my question is this...
Is the What's Hot, What's Not in Crypto Today show, failing to gain traction as result of people not actually caring?
Or is it just being drowned out by the noise level in here because of posts like this one?
If you're really interested in bringing new users to the platform. How about ya'll head over there and let us know what you want and what topics you want to explore?
I wish I could figure out how to get a golf clap GIF for you, but apparently I suck, so I upvoted you instead.
You are, of course, completely right! But the world is a shitty and barren wasteland where dreams go to die and cockroaches thrive.
So there was this thing called Facemash. Facemash was pretty simple - a college guy created an algo that gave college girls a numerical rating based on their physical attractiveness. Don't know the details, but basically a boner was a 10 and it went down from there. You get the idea.
So Facemash represents everything you just threw up all over - sexist, unfair, immature, exploiting, full of creepy guys. They didn't even pay the girls. Assholes. And you know what happened?
Yeah. Facebook happened. Facebook being the largest and most successful social media platform on the planet. And it didn't happen because all the girls called Zuckerberg a creep and left for the moral high ground.
Facebook is a veritable Victorian cess pool of creeps, fat white dudes, sock puppets, stalking, scheming and general human awefulness. Personal note, I had to sign up for a Facebook account to get a Steemit account and I'm still pissed off about it. I don't do reddit either, and needed karma, which I couldn't get fast enough, so had to give Facebook my phone number. WTF?
Where was I? Oh right. You're right. But humans are greedy and shallow and crave attention and money like a crack addict craves crack. So you're wrong, too.
Excellent comment, and thank you for taking the time to get it all out. Probably one of the best lessons in life is that you can't change people. They are who they are and as much as you want them to be something else they never will be no matter how hard you try. Same deal with the human race. You need to work with both sides, know and accept them for what they are, and not judge. For the love of god, don't judge.
Zuck would probably give the chick in a bikini at the top of your post a 9, btw. Just sayin'.
So fecesbook blows and you're pissed that you had to sign up but steemit is going to turn into the new fecesbook and you're all psyched about it?
What about letting the greedy shallow humans keep playing on fecesbook and reddit and steering steemit in a direction that plucks the apples from the cesspool and provides them with the community and capital they need to develop projects that at least have some chance of making the world a better place?
So far, I haven't found your critical thinking skills or ethics to be very inspiring. You'll probably do really well here if the whales don't wake up and reverse course!
Fecesbook... awesome.
But I coudn't ride your train all the way to the station. I'm not advocating, I'm postulating.
You need to read the end of the OP again for the punch line. What I'm saying is that what you want is what is being done but because smart intellectual types don't generally do well running business they are confused and upset by how this business is being bootstrapped into an economy that can support smart intellectual types.
In time Steemit will probably become exactly what you and others like you envision. But it's crawl before you walk. What you're asking for is actually more like flying. So there's a lot of dirty, grimy, smelly work to do before we can put on the white gloves.
Again, you're contradicting yourself.
Crawling would be carefully curating to build the most intelligent, ethical, and innovative userbase slowly. Flying is trying to attract a billion dolts in a month.
You're probably a fucking robot anyway....
Biology is fun - you know what is thriving? Ants. Freaking ants are everywhere. They aren't particularly smart but man, somehow, they thrive and blanket the earth with their antness. There's like a billion of them born every month and they will probably never go extinct. You could almost say the ants have conquered the earth.
You know what is not thriving? Elephants. They are slow, they are smart and they are all stuck together in one little spot. You could probably say that elephants have not conquered the world and won't anytime soon.
Yes, this is a social media allegory involving ants and elephants.
If you want to bootstrap a new ecosystem, you breed ants. Not elephants. You get millions of ants in a few months but only one elephant after decades. I will be eating ant pancakes while you try desperately not to butcher a baby elephant.
Ants are kind of gross and creepy, elephants are majestic and awesome. But which one wins the evolutionary race?
No reply link on your ant post. Ants are pests and mess up huge areas of land because civilization destroys and domesticates their natural predators. Elephants are beautiful, create awesome soil, and set a great example as to how to live sustainably and peacefully as nomadic foragers and are only struggling because civilization creates sociopathy and psychopathy and rewards those traits. It would weigh less on my conscience if I killed a human than an elephant but I kill billions of ants a year, just so plants will grow. If you're excited about ant world, I genuinely hope that you are able to enjoy that world from inside a server sometime soon, before the ant people destroy everything.
Yeah, no reply link on your server post either. Weird. We must be overloading Steemit with the epic volume of excellent comments.
I'm right there with you. I have had this huge infestation of ants in my front lawn for years. Can't kill the bastards. They kill my grass and make a mess on the sidewalk. Ants are assholes. But they are successful assholes that keep growing no matter what sort of Home Depot horrors we bring to bear on their creepy little ant asses.
There's what we'd like the world to be and there's what the world is. Ants are thriving and elephants are... not. I'd be ecstatic if that was the other way around. So would my lawn.
I'm not worried about the ant people destroying everything and having to shack up in a server. They're all too busy getting rich by posting packing lists on Steemit. ;)

Totally disagree and here's why...

Great post, upvoted! You're a Step 2 kinda guy, and I respect that.
Right mouse click > copy image address > ctrl + v
Why thank you. I'm not sure what question you answered, but it looks very helpful. And I like him. So I upvoted your post.
I answered your question, John Smith:
"I wish I could figure out how to get a golf clap GIF for you, but apparently I suck, so I upvoted you instead."
@JohnSmith... you said that you couldn't figure out hot to get a golf clap GIF. I was showing you how. : )
Make me a dolphin!!!!
I agree with you, the thinking way the "whalers" think is a mysterium for me. I dont know why they think bikini etc has more friends then us.
I havebeen doing crypto for almost 3 and a half year now. And know alot of peaple. I already recruted 5 ppl maby more, couse the registration is closed.
And this is only within 5 days, and if they likes it they recruit friend, working mates ETC. So i dont know how the recruit way they think is best. But for me it lock like they almost only want girls here.
If they would like a big and fast growth, they should share more power to almost allnew couse imagination how the word would spreed when they actualy can se how easy it is to use steemit and still have a profite.
I think this comunity could be big, but now that i see how the growth and monney get distrubated i dont actualy knows any more. Couse i feel this gives a bad reputations one way and a good oposit way.
Steemit should be fear for ewerybody who use it, not a big group for one kind of peaple.
We are all worth the same, and are also human being in the natural way. So ihope this was only temprarly and would change after this great threat about it.
I realy like this project and hipe it would keep it like that. If not i think this soon or later would colapse.
Booth babes. Just... booth babes in an ocean of crypto-dudes.
Your post is from the heart. Have an upvote. Now go look at the front page. What do you see? See what we did?
Yess, babes ewerywhere :p
This has been a thinking for a couple of days. Tanks for this reply :)
Not a top girl post anymore, im glad to see that :) If that was the point you got?
Yes, that was the point. There was a seething, hot, infected boil in the growing in the community... filled with the angry puss of injustice and self-pity. So I figured we'd lance it and drain that sucker right out. Feels good, don't it?
Yes it is great. I agree with you :)
It nice to agree with someone you don't know. And I'm sorry, but all I see is nipple.
The moment when you read a post and realize the coments are better than the post. Sorry, I'm gone up vote myself.
Upvoted. Cause it's a GIF.
The comments are usually always better than the original post! LOL
The moment you realize that a shitty GIF alone will not get you upvotes...
Nail on the head much? Nicely done sir.
I have a similar rant called "Whale Ho" @pierce-the-veil
https://steemit.com/curation/@steemed/im-a-steem-whale-looking-for-writers
Sometimes I think the game's kinda rigged, you know?
Game is always rigged. Game will always be rigged. You're still going to play the game.
You've restored my faith in the platform! Been wanting to say something similar for a week; thanks for doing it so well and for all of us that really love the potential Steem and Steemit promises.
A restoration of faith is a new experience for me... kinda tingles. In a good way. Maybe you were me in another life, or I was you, and we had the same thought but it made it to my fingers first. Anyway, happy ending. Thank you for your comment!
Show some support to new service i just released!
https://steemit.com/steemit/@cryptotony/steem-link-first-steemit-short-url-service-with-bunch-of-features
Great tool! I upvoted you. Now if you spam my post again I will downvoted you. Understood?
I have been trying to get new users to the platform, BUT THE PLATFORM IS CURRENTLY LOCKED!!!
can't have adoption WITHOUT NEW PEOPLE JOINING!
go ahead ... TRY TO MAKE A NEW ACCOUNT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS!
Demand, meet supply. Supply can't play today, he's feeling a little technologically challenged. Maybe come back tomorrow?
Best comment I've seen on this topic so far! Now I can just refer people here instead of continuing to explain my disillusion.
I think it's only a matter of time. At some point the whales will stop upvoting pot and hikers and truckers and start supporting more mainstream content. But hey, you can't say it's not interesting.
Awesome, better than the original post.
Well now, let's not get carried away. I had better pics. ;)
Jesus tap dancing christ i think you just made a tear come out of me. Thank you for this comment that makes more sense than anything i ever read, ever.
I don't know which comment you're talking about or who wrote it, but I'm going to take credit on a purely statistical basis. You're welcome! Come back anytime.
HEY!
We need RANDOM tab instead PAYOUT TIME.
There will be all posts, random order, who earned less than $ 10!
Among them will be a lot of good articles!
If we want to novices were also seen!
Interesting feature... and is he waving or saluting? And why does one eye close?
he a soldier! :)
There's a dirty joke here somewhere.
Just steem it!
Sounds like fun. And I upvoted your post before it was cool. Nice work!
I agree, this site will have quality posters turn away if something is not done! I spent hours putting together some photography posts, and get only $.03! Then i see posts from people ranting on about their joints they smoked and they have a few $K! Not really fair!
You know what we're doing right now? Something. I like the girls better than the car. But the car is pretty awesome. The girls are just more awesome.
@williambanks I really agree with you here, I actually just posted this here
https://steemit.com/steemit/@jmartens/personal-observation-of-steemit
Because ive been seeing articles upvoted strictly so users could try to cash in. Ive posted a few articles, and i don't think im by any means super interesting or anything but I really took my time and have shared genuine experiences that amount to $0.60 at the most. Personally im starting to feel like the entire steemit experience is false, its not about quality content its about jumping on the nearest trending bandwagon. Just my 2 cents
Write like no one is watching. Cause they aren't anyway, but you'll have more fun.
If you come to Steemit to make money you're going to get your ass handed to you. If you come to Steemit to do something you'd do somewhere else for no money, you'll handle your own ass. And it will feel good. Like money.
@williambanks you gotta give him credit; the photos were quite impactful. Also, it is like the light at the end of the tunnel. Figure it out, basically is what he seems to be saying. And plus you did well off of his 'work' too so you can't be that mad...
What he said. :D

Btw this is the longest comment i had ever read on steemit. Good job.. i upvote you.
Thank you. I upvote you too.
