I almost never post twice in a day but this time I feel compelled to do so!
Let's Succeed Together!
I try and spend some of my time on Steemit every day looking for new members that I can help through not only upvotes but mostly by means of encouragement and advise.
Last night I came across a somewhat discouraged member who had been on the platform for only 2 days! I'm showing you here my comment to him as it may help you as well.
Here is My Response to Him
Look past this image to see it in large print!
I've written it out bigger for you below in case it's hard to read!
First of all welcome to Steemit and day two of your adventure! I'm also originally from Ontario and know many of its nooks and crannies! I read your intro post and it seems that you've got a lot to offer and can do well here.
It's interesting to read your observations and I'd like to offer you another viewpoint.
"Mostly that the platform creates incentive for bad behavior, and junk posts are often more valuable than real content."
I have found that the incentive for good behavior is very high and most have felt the friendly non trollish nature of the platform. Bad behavior can be flagged and downvoted whereas good behavior is upvoted.
"My posts from yesterday based on current profit:"
You then go on to list what your earnings will be. Your figures are too low for several reasons. First the posts continue to earn for 7 days both for the article and possibly on your comments and interaction. Second The figure that you see on your post is actually much smaller than the payout as it will be based on the price of Steem. Let me show you:
Check This Sight For Your Stats
Once there navigate down to Coming Author Rewards and you'll see that the picture is a lot brighter.
Here it shows the value to be a total of $19.36 so far!
If you want to learn more about how Steemworld.org works you can have a look at my "tutorial" here
A Few Final Observations and I can't over emphasize them.
1.)This is social media. Instant success is almost impossible unless you are already well known from other social media circles and you bring over a following. You need to build relationships and this will lead to followers and eventually success.
The number one way to do this is by commenting on other writers posts so they get to "know" and recognize you.
2.) I'm not convinced that posting 4 or five times a day is the best strategy. One well written article promoted and followed up might help you more. I would spend the rest of my time commenting on other peoples post in a meaningful and interactive way.
3.) Are you promoting your post on Facebook, Steemit.chat, Telegram and in the Discord channels? If you need more info on this please reference my guide for newbies here.
I hope that this info helps and I wish you all the best here on Steemit!
Here is His Response!
_"I appreciate the detailed and insightful reply. You're right about interacting more with the community instead of expecting them to magically stumble across my content.
I guess I shouldn't really expect my posts to get attention if I'm not doing the same for others. I'll definitely give your guide a read later in the day!
Ive been trying to figure out the difference between Steem and Steem Dollars, but I'm still slightly muddled. Is a Steem Dollar pegged to USD? What does the monetary amount on a post represent - Steem or Steem Dollars?"_
So There You Have it My Fellow Steemers!
- Mentor new Steemers as much as you can
- Encourage direct and reassure them
- Teach what you know and help them
- To be successful we need many succeeders and happy steemers!
From Now on I Will be Adding a New Footer to my Posts!
"Let's Succeed Together!"
Until next time,
@kus-knee (The Old Dog)
I admire your helpful spirit, @kus-knee, but I found it annoying that he was on the platform for 2 (count them two!) days, does not know how things work, but is already making suggestions as to how to change things.
We have had the likes of him many, many, many times before. They tend to find a reason to "rage quit" when there is a downturn in the price of steem and then come back when the payouts are large again. What do they call them again? Oh yeah, "Fair Weather Friends"
And, he thinks because he spent many hour of research and writing to put up many posts in one day - he should be compensated for all his work. Well, screw him. I have never used a bot, and I read every post I upvote.
My time is valuable too.
I agree with almost everything that you wrote and my initial reaction would have been to "tell him off"!
I actually discussed his "case" with my family and they too were of the "how dare he" sentiment.
I decided instead to get him to reason and hopefully this time it will help produce an active, happy user.
Perhaps two tactics or two approaches from two different personalities and I can't write that I would find fault with either.
You also do a great job mentoring, encouraging, supporting and helping Steem to succeed!
I had the same reaction too @onceuponatime and @kus-knee. I recently posted about how I gained traction on STEEMIT, from New Year's to New Year's (HOWTO Get Attention on STEEMIT without PISSING PEOPLE OFF! 😱)!
From my comment to him:
That's really cool. So happy for your success!
Wow! Have you seen what happened below? That is quite some "mentoring" I got this morning.
"I have never used a bot, and I read every post I upvote."
THANK YOU! My vote power is pfft now so tip!
I am not so offended by the person who got in a twist, this site is overwhelming. You will see people call it a "meritocracy" which leads one to think that if you put in some hard work you will be rewarded. Trouble is this is NOT a meritocracy, not a pure one. Anyway, I am following you BECAUSE you do not use bots. I appreciate that more than words can say. Vote = curation and the bots do NOT read a word they upvote.
Learning to drive a car is "overwhelming". Learning to play a guitar is "overwhelming". Learning to speak a foreign language is "overwhelming".
You don't earn a lot of money as a top race car driver the second day you take a driving lesson. You don't make money as a performance musician, or a studio musician, the second day you start doing a couple of chords. You don't earn money as a translator the second day you start learning a foreign language
I have spent thousands of hours learning crypto, making contacts, posting, commenting, and investing in steem when everyone else was pulling money out hand over fist when prices were dropping.
"My vote power is pfft now so tip!"
Yeah, right. That's a good reason to use up my voting power in your humble opinion?
Not sure how you got into a twist over my not being offended... But OK. I did not say he was justified or correct, just that I understand. I did not ask you to do anything with your upvoting power, I dropped a tip on you because my vote is not worth very much. Do you not understand that the 0.1 SBD you were gifted below came from me? I was not asking, I was giving. You are very welcome and I promise I won't make that mistake again! Unfollowed just that fast!
I read it as you have very little voting power so I should tip you. You did not say "so here's a tip", you said "so tip!" which sounded like an order to me.
Yeah... that is how you call the tipu service. It says right in the box that I GAVE you a tip. You strike me as the kind of person who is LOOKING for excuses to be offended. I am sure you will be wildly successful on that endeavor.
I read your comment. I did not read the bot (until after I responded to you). Your comment says:
"I have never used a bot, and I read every post I upvote."
THANK YOU! My vote power is pfft now so tip!

I don't know if we are working towards the same end or not. I want to point out the adverse effects of bots whereas you, despite having apparently lauded me for NOT using them, seem to be making use of them yourself.
Hi @onceuponatime! You have received 0.1 SBD tip from @fishyculture!
Check out new tipuvote! feature :)
Advertising space on my Comments goes for more than 10 cents LOL
@onceuponatime good point here on the far weather friends but maybe they were not feeling happy to write. Anyhow time does set apart the loyal from not I guess your fidelity is unquestionable. Following you
Very encouraging your way of mentoring @kus-knee. I myself have been motivated just reading your guidelines. I have to say that you have motivated me to help others with the little knowledge and experience that I have so far. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks for your nice comment!
I was lucky 44 days ago when I finally jumped after looking at Steemit from the cheap seats and whether or not I should. I can say as a plankton, all you said is so true. @lucylin a good intelligent steemer from Thailand (Brit x-pat) was the first to pass on some advice and he followed (I think out of pity). The early days were just engage others blogs, avoid being trite and be yourself but if you had nothing to add..don't and vote + even its worth so little if you felt moved by the post's content. The author takes note and appreciates it. It is common decency/good manners. Then you evolve meet new people - purely by happenstance. @everittdmickey is another I am quite fond of. Because of him I read something by richq11.. that led to something I could not have imagined would have occurred in any other SM medium. Great guy! Separate the wheat and caff and they are some extraordinary people/content on Steemit. Yes I noticed some gambits, whining and the ever-rising amount of new accounts inbound, my bandwidth is throttled in prime-time of late and such - BUT I GET IT. I hope to earn my place here not by silliness or fraud but by consistent engagement and I don't expect anything for nothing... only for value as viewed by others.
I feel fortunate to have entered here wish I months ago [but trusting is earned over time]..and not stayed outside looking in thru the peep hole. It is a wonderful thing. I plan to stick around and push on, one comment, one post, at a time (and plan to invest to the 500 level so I can reward better as well). Thank you. (got my rep 40 tonight...so a small good feeling). :)
Great comment. Sounds like you "get it" and you have good, reasonable and realistic goals. Glad that you're here and you did well to do some due diligence first.
Great example @kus-knee, if the people who are here will help the new this way, we surely will have more success all together!
There is a LOT to learn here but it's a fun and progressive form of education!
Absolutely, it may be quite hard in the beginning but luckily there's some active users ready to help!
Good work! It's nice to give some guidance. The fact is that we are all mentors on Steemit and it's important to realize that we can all help- like you did - because we have all been there; in the beginning when you don't get noticed.
Like you say the key is engagement. I can wait forever for you to come to my post or I can just go and visit you directly. In Steemit it's important to understand that we are all contributors, and we all want some of the lime light.
In the beginning I think it's good to spend 80 percent on commenting and 20 percent on posting. The more followers you get the easier it will be to get traction with the posts. So there is a lot of work to build a foundation - but it's all worth it !
Well put my interesting multi cultural friend!
Thanks :)
You really are a nice guy, aren't you??😉
I'm 100% agree with you 😊😊😊😊
Hmmm can you vouch for that?
I'm quite sure I can!!
I see what's going on here lol!
There I go again flirting with my wife!
I'm going to go way out on a limb here and guess Subtle isn't your middle name! Flirt on Brother!!! That's wonderful to see- a man flirting with his wife- does my heart good to see!!!
Old Dog!
Hopefully the new steemian is incouraged to countinue their adventure!!
I read the entire comment first and it was really hard to read and then after reading it I also read that you had written it out!! Reading the written version would have hurt my eyes less. Lol😂😂
Oops. Sorry. I should have let everyone know before the image that it was written out below!
Well, I guess it’s to late for that😂!!
sir this is my 4th month on the steemit..and once i have given up on this and left this even..but again i joined this..but now i dont want to given up on this..now i am learning this and making myself comfortable here with the things..i think for the new comers there should be a support..and the support we get from your giving away projects is immense..and these tutorials help us to build ourselves in this community..so thank you very much for your help..and now im feeling sad about the time i have wasted on face book..here i grow, learn and earn :)
ps - i wanted to post this comment as soon as you uploaded your post..but sir this bandwidth problem didnt let me post this.now only i could post this..i was not aware about this problem even..today one of the steemians in here shared me the link to know more about this problem..so i m learning things with the help of you guys..what we need is some guidance and little attention only :)
Thanks so much for your lovely comment. I realize that in certain areas band width is a problem and it must be frustrating! Glad to rad that you're finding yourself making progress!
Hey Kus, 've been trying to gain some steem by posting original content and tying to find interesting posts and leaving insightful comments. But what's sad is that I have so little steempower, that I can't really show much support with my upvotes... Wouldnyou suggest buying in, or to generically and patiently build up the value? Thank a lot, if you have a minute, any feedback you have on my account is appreciated! Best wishes old dog!
Hi friend. I just had a quick look at your posts and upvoted some of them. I love your art and the colors that you use! Happy stuff!
I see that you've just started and have made about 90 posts including comments. It takes time so just stay the course. Try and make contacts with other artists and join in some art contests. @airmatti has a great one right now but you need to be in the italian discord chanel in order to qualify.
I did buy some steam power when it was under $1.00 but at these prices I wouldn't but that's your choice.
Take a look at this article that I wrote becasue it has a lot of tips.
Ones you've tried that stuff get back to me and in the meantime I'm always available to help if I can!
All the best to you @artzanolino (is that a name from the Veneto region of Italy?)
Thank you so much for the reply and support. I really appreciate you taking the time to give such an elborate answer and useful tips.
I'll stay the course, keep on searching for, supporting and posting good content. I'll also follow @airmatti and see if I can participate in some Steemit art competitions.
I'll check out your other article, and you can count on my continued support!
My roots from my paternal grandfather's side are italian, from the northern region of Italy. I'm not certain if that's the Veneto region... Do you also have Italian roots?
Very solid advice. It burns me when people just give up...especially on here.
Thanks friend!
I agree with what you done, if it was only his second day then surely it was better to explain the situation a bit more. Giving him an alternative point of view will help understand how steemit works and make him a better user in the future. Thanks for sharing.
There are so many good examples here on Steemit and so we all try and pass on what we learn!
I'm also a beginner
So the help of you our seniors is very meaningful to us
It is very important.
Yea We would be very grateful if assisted by seniors like you guys
I think every newbie should read this. I started 3 weeks ago; some days may be discouraging especially when you worked hard to create good content but other days are better. Thanks for this
Thanks to you for your positive spirit and perseverance!
This is what we really need.Today is my 8th day on steemit and still I am trying to learn my basics. These tutorials support us to learn how things happen in here. All we need is little encouragement and a guidance to move ahead.Thank you very much for your words.I felt like you have been saying them to me.
-cheers-
I'm so happy if it can help!
@kus-knee,
Success will not archive in a single day! I am becoming an owl and this is my 7th month in Steemit! I was hard, be a millionaire in a single night, of course it's a dream! How many times I was suffered I was earning $0.00 :D Did I stop my Steemit career? Nah and never!
If we are not earning for a post, no matter how many hours we spent for it, we need to understand something wrong with it! "Enlightened Self-interest" I think this is a suitable word for that!
I am not earning too much till today too! I never passed 3 figure payout so far! But it's me, I will make it happen, that's what we all wanna believe! If we do our best, we will get what we deserved to get!
Cheers~
What a great comment from another great example!
@kus-knee,
I just used my real experience as I said I wanna write it as a post one day!
Cheers~
Just what I needed to see - thanks so much for supporting us newbies - it’s so refreshing to see. It is hard and challenging at first - some posts barely get any upvotes, which can be a bit gutting. Even when commenting and showing a genuine interest in other people’s posts, some people only seem to acknowledge the ones with higher reputation scores - which is a bit sad. So this super nice and helpful post has made me happy. I’ll check out your guides 👍🏼
I feel for you. First of all try and have fun, enjoy the community, read, help others, learn and then earn.
Sound advice - thank you. I’m definietly having fun, and enjoying getting to know this new community :)
Excellent advice my friend! Especially the part about posting 4 or 5 times- it won't get you anywhere. I see people post time after time after time clogging up the whole feed and all that accomplishes is making folks mad because it buries quality posts... This isn't Twitter! One or even two good posts a day, will get the best results. Back in "the old days" when there wasn't many people on here, it was different... and I've found a new friend to mentor (actually, given his experience with computers, I'm not sure who's mentoring whom lol).
Hey wow good to hear about the new member! Drop me his username and I'll have a look!
@bluelazer... He's another old Navy man- a patriot and a really, really good person. He's making a book out of my Kid That Became A Guy series that I did SO long ago. We spoke on the phone for a long while last night- he does computer security and is really knowledgeable about how these contraptions work (unlike yours truly)
Oh man you deserve so so much respect, you are our Mentor & Teacher onward.
They way you explained the thi gs with kind behaviour you stole my heart and respect for it
I will consider all these points as i am going to write my inyroductory post @kus-knee
You are a true and genuine Steemian ♡
Massive Respect & Love for you
Stay Blessed!
Thanks a million for your encouragement. It means a lot to me!
Thanks for the great post, I upvoted and resteemed. I will be personally sharing this information with the new local steemians I know.
Great to read. Let’s help each other!
Lots of good info here! I'm resteeming so others can learn, too.
The more you learn the more you'll be doing the same!
I hope so! I still have a hard time answering some of the questions newbies ask me!
I would like to start a contest with some of the SBD that I will be receiving soon as prize dollars. I like the format you use for your Mundane contests, and wanted to ask if you would mind if I pattern the rules the same as.yours. Any advice you have would be appreciated!
You are free to use and modify any of my ideas and formats. Steemit is open source and so am I. There are 500,000 people on here so far so lots of room for contest etc...
You’re such an inspiration @kus-knee! You were the first one to help me here. I was overwhelmed with all the new information and feeling a tiny little fish, and you visited my profile and left a very kind reply, and for that, I’ll be forever thankful!
You just made my day!
It makes me happy :) and I really mean it! I’m new here, but I’ve been in the business field long enough to know how to appreciate when someone takes the time to do something kind. We need more people like you in the world!
Thanks again. There are so many helpful people here.
Wow if @kus-knee gave me this kind of guide when I started I would have been so successful and it is so heartbreaking to see that someone thought he could be successful in two days, he should know that life is not like that.
And I saw a post of a whale recently, he was saying how he posted great posts but got like 0.01 for almost a week but he persevered. So I see no reason for this guy to start complaining.
Wise words @davidsiedoma!
Thanks, I am just saying my mind
Hello! I have a question, when you say “followed up” you mean to make a similar post next? Or to engage in comments?
By "follow up" I mean engage in conversation with those that comment on your post. If you make 4 or five a day it might make it very hard to do so. I come to recognize and afterward "know" many on my blog through their comments and our subsequent "conversations".
That's very kind of you to explain this guy how things work on here! You are very good person Old Dog! Always ready to help and to support! 😊😊😊😊😊Our world needs more people like you :)))
Thanks so much for your support!
Thanks for the post.
You had me read the entire small print before informing me that you retyped it in large - nice - LOL straining my eyes!!
Steemworld is real nice never new about this until yesterday.
Thanks for posting.
Sorry for the eye strain! I guess I should put that little note before the image! :)
@kus-knee you have really made a post on totally different topic because many user are sharing crypto world info or photography but your post was so different from that ........Thanks for making new content ..........keep steeming !!
Thanks for the compliment @sid9999
So true @kus-knee ! I do this often to help newbies ! its good to give back as I was also helped many times !! Keep up the great work my friend !💕✌👍😀
You are a good Steemit citizen!
Awe thanks ! you too !!👍✌💕😀
Very generous of you to provide such a detailed, helpful post. I have been here for a while and it was helpful to re-read your information!
we need to all encourage each other every now and then.. . My friend kept me going when I joined left and then came back again.. all because he never stopped using Steemit .. I now plan to keep after it.
I went to the computer to see what you wrote and then I read that you put it below for those who could not read.. lol
Have a wonderful day and thanks for the encouragement.
Thanks for the visit and sorry for straining your eyes! I've since edited the post! :)
@kus-knee please help me how to achieve your success I'm a willing team member here great post by the way
ask away if you have a question!
You are quite an asset to the community @kus-knee by guiding and encouraging new steemians.
It really is hard to start at steemit but it is like a snowball, one you are big you will continue to grow.
Thanks so much for your kind words!
Very well thought out plan to help those who want to learn. I read the comments and I see both sides of this issue. There are many who come to Steemit with expectations that are unrealistic and are shocked to find out it's takes time and effort to be disciplined daily. And, to find their lane, that takes time.
I will definitely use some of your ideas when helping others who ask why they are not being noticed etc etc etc. Your wording is very kitchen table easy and friendly. Thank you for putting a comprehensive post together - one we can all learn from.
Sometimes a little honey helps whereas a bit of vinegar pushes them away - some do need to go away, but just sayin' :)
Yes sometimes tough love works better but if you don't know the person I think kindness works better.
Yes, I agree.
Here is a quote suitable:
You were so helpful and cheering, congrats on that @kus-knee!
Thanks for your quote!
You have to see it as a hobby and have fun in it. It is very nice that the experienced steemians give an explanation.
Nice..
Thanks for the important post 👍
all of your post is so helpful
Great tips for the beginner. You're very kind in providing such support. Sometimes I see beginners resentful messages about what the whale does not matter to them. But really, good content will always get your reward. Sooner or later. We need to continue the good work. And not wait that the success will fall from the heavens. And of course try to build friendships here. In the end, Steemit is not only a place to earn money but first for communication. Communication is the experience, it is sometimes much more valuable than money.
Oh thanks for the great share, your post is a treasure for the newbies.yes contineous tutorial is utmost importance for sharing the knowledge for new users. You are fantastic, you had described about the working and awesomeness of our community in your great post. I offered you my heartest thanks for your great effort for the development and progress of steemit world.
It is very important to interact with others and add valuable content! I think finding niches that one enjoys within the community also helps users become more than without it! Building relationships in most things (business, marriage, etc) are super important and Steemit is no different! The more time one puts into the platform, the more they will get out of it!
I think promoting posts via multiple means of social media is incredibly underrated that many users don't do often enough. I am guilty of this big time!
You make some very good points and you seem to have good grasp for where you want to go and how to get there.
We all have to start somewhere, right!?
@kus-knee, you've made a very detailed and encouraging reply to the newbie. This is very important and helps not to give up and keep on trying.
Saya sangat menyukai posting anda.
your post is very best. your every post is thrilled, Which looks good in reading.

It’s fun and so many do so!
