10 days of reflection —day 1 — zamboni style

in #photofeed7 years ago (edited)

there are three things in life that people like to stare at
a flowing stream
a crackling fire
and a zamboni clearing the ice

This is perfect! I never even considered ice as a reflective surface! The zamboni pushes this from a great shot to an amazing shot! How did you manage to find the rink so empty?

Thanks @ilovedietcoke. Ice cleared is a great reflective surface, especially at night. I have a few night shots that I like but I've used them in other posts so I don't think I can re use them

The zamboni was resurfacing the ice after a junior hockey practice for the public skate. We were just waiting for it to be done so the grand kids could skate. It looks so interesting doesn't it. It's entertaining to watch.

You forgot to add that people applaud the performance, at least, here, in Canada, lol

What a beautiful reflection...on so many levels. You're an artist, @countrygirl

Thank you so much! An artist? I guess. I'm one of those people who don't know these things about themselves. Glad you enjoyed the photo and reflections however :)

ahhhh love. sigh..... see what i mean, @countrygirl? :)

there IS something about a Zamboni. there aren't many things that can go from cracked, dull and broken to crisp, shiny and new.... at least not as efficiently as the Zamboni performs! I find myself in such a meditative daze when I watch :)

and @johnjgeddes... you know what else people applaud??? (and i've only witnessed this flying to and from Russia) A Russian airplane touching down! As soon as the wheels touch the ground, the whole plane erupts with applause! My husband and I looked at each other with amused surprise... and then joined in with all the Russians clapping! so fun! hehehe

I know .....Zamboni's always get spectators. It's not that they are that interesting...like a garbage truck. :) But they make the ice brand new so it's cool to watch.

Clapping when landing? Not in America....in America everyone complains and then pushes to get out before anyone else, knocking people in the head with their overhead luggage....so rude! That's it, I'm going to Russia.

hahahahaha - it's super fun. when you go - you'll think of me when you land :)

my hubby keeps asking me when we're going back.
i say - when we get money for the tickets??? LOL

I haven't seen a zamboni in years. I was a rink rat. I grew up with three brothers who were hockey nuts, then I married a hockey nut and we had four sons who were hockey nutlets.

lol....sounds like a bunch of nuts.....a rink rat!! I haven't heard that expression in years, maybe decades.

You don't hang around at rink long enough...LOL

I had never even heard of it. I thought it was a type of pasta :O)

In Canada, the land of ice hockey and all things winter sportish, Zamboni's are a thing of beauty and when they come onto the rink at half time to clear the icy and make it all shiny new, people actually applaud. I'm not a hockey fan so I don't get it, I just enjoy the swirly twirly glassy marks it leaves behind. And I take photos and go home.

Pasta? haha...funny.

I got some use out of the font. Very happy with it thank you again. :)

Like @meesterboom I also never heard of a Zamboni before. We like to skate in the Netherlands, but mostly we skate distances (the longest is the 10.000 meters). This year at the Olympics a Canadian skater Ted-Jan Bloemen (with Dutch roots) is the opponent of our 'hero' Sven Kramer.

I love watching the distance skaters, their skates are a bit different than regular ones, right? I'm looking forward to watching the Olympics soon. I hope there is no political nonsense or terrorism attacks. We live in a strange time that's for sure.

In Ottawa - about 6 hours from me, the Rideau Canal freezes and is open for people to skate. There are booths where hot chocolate and other snacks are sold along the route. One day we might venture there but I can't skate anymore. It would still be interesting to experience it however.

Yes, we know different kind of skates, for hockey (what you called regular ones), for figure skating and for distances, we call them ' noren'. 'Noren' have longer irons beneath the shoes.

Yes, THAT's what they are called. Thank you, I couldn't think of the word!

Oh, you have joined the challenge! I am also nominated by @allyinspirit, but I am a bit reluctant to start :) I am looking at the photo, and it feels like you are standing on the ice. How come the Canadian flag is in black and white, and the one on the other side is not? :)

I muted some of the reds on purpose because I wanted the numbers on the timer to pop and to have the eye drawn to the reflection. Red is a big color.

I guess the american flag is a different red because when I tried to mute it, the numbers were affected. I should have used that tool to isolate just the numbers - now that I'm thinking about it. I don't know exactly what steps I took because I don't take notes while editing - I suppose I could/should but then it will be in the history anyway.

I was standing in the entry to the actual rink which is why it looks like I am standing on the ice - no barriers. If I was on the ice you'd get a ceiling shot!!!! lol and I'd be in the hospital with a concussion. The ice is so slippery after the zamboni passes.

I'll bet you would do great with this challenge. If it takes you a month to complete - whose going to notice?? No one but you :) It's a really good subject. I nominated myself so there is no pressure.

I have experienced myself how slippery ice is, even if not smoothed by a zamboni :)) Strange because the reds are still reds regardless of the nuance.

Although playing with reflections is great fun, I am a bit hesitant about joining this challenge. I promise to think about it, though :)

Nothing cooler than falling on ice.....smooth moves. lol....ah life. So embarrassing sometimes.

Here's the original for you to figure out....the why of the red color sitch. Screen Shot 2018-01-13 at 4.52.42 PM.png

All reds got muted when I tried to edit it, so I don't know :) Haha, it doesn't really matter :)

haha.....look at you editing my photo...that's great. I appreciate your input as always and love that you couldn't figure it out either !!!! It's fun to figure this stuff out.

Great interpretation of the theme dear!

Truth! I grew up in a small town that had a skating rink. Scott Hamill and Janet Lynn practiced there for the Olympics and Scott took some classes at the High School with me. The rink was open for public skating on weekends and we had such fun there! Great photo!

You went to school with Scot Hamill? That so fun! I used to love watching him skate. I don't remember Janet Lynn as much - had to look her up and then recognized her face but don't remember her skating.
Good story!

He was still in high school age and needed a few classes to finish. He skated with his coach all morning, and then came for a class or two in the afternoon. Lots of skaters did, and all us town kids thought those skaters were pretty odd! Scott was probably the most personable and friendly of any of them.

He seemed it in interviews Sounds like you've got some great highschool memories.

I've never heard of a zamboni. How did you get to take such a great picture with an empty rink?

We were there for the public skate. The junior hockey team had just finished practice and the zamboni was resurfacing the ice for the public skate. It takes about 10 minutes for it to complete the job.

I've only been to one hockey game and we didn't see the Zamboni that day.

I did, however, see a hockey puck fly nearby. Hit a poor woman sitting up the row from us and they took her off on a stretcher.

Geez.....that would hurt!!! Wasn't there a plexi glass barrier? Obviously not where she was sitting.

Zambonis are interesting. I love the markings they make.

There was a barrier but a few rows of seating was above it. I guess they thought it was too high for that to happen.

I never was able to find out if she was okay but I hope she was.

Very nice picture..thanks for sharing@countrygirl

Thanks for stopping to look!

Best Photograph Dear @countrygirl .its prove you are a expert Photographer .......

Thanks you kindly.

awesome collection of wonderful pictures thanks for this lovely post

This one makes me smile 😊

Brings back some good memories I hope :)

I don’t have a lot of experience or associations with zambonis but they just seem fun.

On another note, have you ever been to the Charles Schulz museum in Santa Rosa, California? It’s so magical. I meet his widow there. She just happened to be wandering through when I was. And we talked and bonded for a really long time. I credit her with inspiring the then sleeping artist part of me.

No, I've not been to CA. I love Charles Schulz (I know he's gone now) That's cool that you got to meet his wife....and chat for a while. It's great when you meet a stranger that you click with...you should write about it. Do you have photos?

Sadly no. That was before my current incarnation as a photographer.

I'd still like to hear the story - you can add some Charlie Brown cuteness :)

Such a sleek surface. So beautifully reflective. Fabulous image @countrygirl.

Haven't heard of a zamboni before either. Something like the rollers they use to smooth over the frost covered greens on our local golf course. 🦋

Sort of, except the zamboni resurfaces the ice....with water and some cold preserving stuff - like ammonia probably - real safe!!! lol.

It's great to skate on after it's been done - so smooth and very slippery actually.

Looks incredibly slippery. Great for skating. I've only skated in a rink, once as a kid. Fell over all the time, but a lot of fun. Must be SO wonderful to be a confident skater and glide over the ice. 🦋
