If one had painted a winter scene at Helmcken falls early in the 20th century, it would have been dismissed as a work of fantasy. In an example of how recently the colonial exploration of a lot of British Columbia was undertaken, the waterfall was not known to exist outside of the indigenous communities until it was formally discovered during a land survey by Robert Henry Lee in 1913. Here the Murtle River plunges down a spectacular 141 m (or 463 ft) in a single drop. To put this in some perspective this is nearly three times as high as Niagara Falls with the winter 'ice cone' that grows around the base of the waterfall reaching similar heights to Niagara itself (51m or 165ft). The falls are home to the world’s hardest ice climbs, which ascend up the overhanging spray ice in the cavern behind the waterfall. The Murtle river drops over the western escarpment of the Murtle Pleatu which was formed from lava deposited as part of the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field 200,000 years ago. The falls themselves however did not form until the wide scale erosion and flooding that occurred in Canada after the massive glacial melting period at the end of the last ice age a mere 10,000 years ago. This is my third entry into the Long Exposure Steemit Photo Challenge run by @jamtaylor. Its a 30sec shot at f/9 and ISO 100 taken using a Canon EOS 6D and Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS USM .

this winter landscape is full of life, the pines look like sentinels of this icy paradise :) great great work!
Beautiful, I have some pictures of Sweden now it's snowing
The winter while cold can make for some beautiful landscapes.
Your shots are always awesome!
Thanks
Yet another spectacular shot, @intrepidphotos! Equally spectacular is the history and geography you've shared! Not only did this Albertan not know of these falls in the neighboring province of B.C., I certainly did not know that there is any water phenomenon "out West" that can rival Niagara Falls "out East"!
Well Niagara falls is really a volume phenomenon as its very high volume (at least when the hydro is not bypassing it ! ) . There are a lot of falls out west which are much higher than Niagara. Kinuseo Falls is another massive but little known falls worth having a look at.
I had no idea! Thank you for the info on Kinuseo Falls! I will keep watching for and enjoying your photos and blogs!
I will put some pics up of Kinuseo in the future .
I am new here! I don't know how you can let me know when you do post. Do you know? Would hate to miss it!
Other than following my feed thats all you can do; unless I remember to go back and tell you ;-)
Well, I have been following you, thus the reason for seeing so many of your captivating shots! So chances are I won't miss it!
Wow, great shot!!! Good luck with the contest ;)
Thanks mate ;-) One can only try !

Wow! That is an amazing winter waterfall photo... Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Andy
Beautiful Photo! What a stunning scenery
Thanks
Dang that is different than when I was there. In a way almost seems more powerful like this.
Yes the scale is hard to grasp from the photo but you have been there so I know you can appreciate it properly !
Keeping me cool on these hot summer days!
Nothing like a frozen waterfall to pass the time while waiting for the dial up modem lights to finish flashing on a 40 deg day while dreaming of a future with air conditioning and the NBN.
but how do I see the waterfall while I'm waiting for the dial up if the dial up hasn't finished for me to download the image of the waterfall....
You can watch the waterfall while you wait after clicking on the next .........
Maybe I'll print it out on my dot matrix
I find the "Etch A Sketch Animator 2000" works well.
Wow so beautiful!!! The colors are superbly balanced
Thanks
Great writeup and photo! I love what the winter has done to this waterfall. I have to go back here, even though I'm slightly mad at it for hiding in the fog the morning I was there. ;)
Thanks Derek ! I would like to go back this summer for a long weekend.
Wow, amazing beauty!
Good luck in the contest

What a lovely shot. Would be great to see this in summer too, for the contrast!
Yes I hope to go back in summer.
Amazing... i like your photo. I hope you visiting my photo for steemitphotochallenge, thank you very much.
Thanks
Wow this is so surreal, it's all frozen yet the water is still frozen, so amazing!
Thanks. Its an amazing spot in the winter !
This is an absolutely gorgeous view! Nicely captured! :)
Thanks
Gorgeous long exposure, Robert!
Cheers mate.
What an amazing composition you got here! Love it! The warmer tones from the trees against the cool look of the snow...gorgeous!
Thanks. Very kind of you. Appreciate the feedback.
Incredible photo! When I grow up I want to take photos like you, @intrepidphotos!
Also, I'm making some tentative plans to visit Banff and Jaspers this summer (hopefully..), this is an awesome discovery. What a place and capture..
I am curious, too, how long was the exposure, and did you use an ND filter?
I have the details at the end of the post (30sec shot at f/9 and ISO 100 taken using a Canon EOS 6D and Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS USM ). As for a filter I cant remember specifically but looking at the shot details for 30sec f9 I think I must have used my 10stop ND .
Oh yeah, sorry. I read the post but apparently I skipped over that part. I would have guessed less than 30 seconds.. interesting. Thank you!
You are making me feel really old ;-) How old are you? Its beautiful up in the Canadian Rockies .
Lol, I am just kidding, it's a way of saying! I'm old, but not old enough in photography. ;) I know, and I've discovered that partly thanks to steemit and all the amazing photos I've seen on here. I have to get there at some point soon..
Its ok; its just that I am having a mid life crisis !
You take beautiful pictures; I would not worry about taking shots like me ;-)
Thank you! I have too little experience and minimal knowledge, but that is about to change..
