Up close with an Australian icon. The Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti), feared by early settlers, was historically responsible for 12 deaths. An antivenom has been available since 1956, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. The female spider, as seen in this shot, is much larger then its male counterpart and has the distinctive red stripe on its abdomen. The female 'digests' the male during a successful mating process, which seems to be unique to Latrodectus hasselti. Females reach around 1 cm in size while males are 3-4 mm when mature. Shot was taken with a 100mm macro lens. NSW, Australia.
As you can probably tell from my feed, macro photography is not something I do a lot of so I would love to hear your thoughts / critique of this shot? It was shot with a Canon EOS 6D using a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM at ISO 1000, f/16, and 1/80s.

That's a nice shot. Thanks for the camera info
Oh, man, how much do you LOVE that lens?! I've played with it but don't own it. Wishlist item!
This shot is gorgeous... I'm terrified of spiders, so I keep scrolling up to it to take a peek, then scrolling back down here to the comments to hide it again hahahaha. What a baby.
I love that you managed to get good DOF to get the majority of the length of the legs sharp! That's super hard to do! Not to mention getting down and shooting a poisonous spider to begin with! I think it's a great shot... I don't really have any critique of it!
Yes its a beautiful lens; I need to get it out more often. But since I have moved to Canada there are not that many insects because the -35 deg C kills them all! I also use the 100-400 mkII L for my wildlife photography (also an amazing lens) but it does quite close up shots (compared to the mk1) so I have been a bit lazy with the 100 macro. I shot this with quite a high ISO so I could use f/16 as the DOF is crazy shallow when doing macro as you point out.
Haha I am grateful for our small insect population here!! Although there are plenty of Black Widows to photograph! Just find a wood pile! They're so shiny and creepy looking!
Oh yes I have seen some beautiful images out of the 100-400 II L for sure. Lots of bird photographers here on the island, and they love it.
I look forward to seeing what you produce when you get your 100L out more! I'll be jealous! :D
Yes the redback is a close relative of the North American black widow. I will have to look out for them.
I was meant to say that macro is not something I do a lot of in the post; rather than something I do a lot of. Have fixed it.
Hello. Spiders are also interesting for me, but there are not many toxic species in sLOVEniji. I can see that this lens gives you a nice sharpness and I have the desire to test it myself once.
For comparison, one small spider from my country, at lunch
Very cool photo. And love the information. You chose a great lens for your macro work. I’ve been looking to get one as well.
I’d expect spiders to be a challenging subject. And with the red back you’re probably limited with angles. So I’d say you’ve done well.
I've come across a couple in my time. Once while cleaning a motorbike and seeing it a few inches from my hand. They always seem much bigger in real life!
Damn. Why are there so many scary things in Australia? There was some kind of vicious arms race for poisonous and deadly things there. What a photo!
I love micro Photography,
This spider, top markings reminds me of a Black widow, except this is more orange than red.
Great photo, keep them coming

A good shot!
