Sunday run: Out before the heat

in #running6 years ago

The UK is still suffering from a heatwave. We had hoped for some rain on Friday, but it missed our area whilst places a few miles away got some. At least it's a bit cooler in the morning. I didn't manage to get out very early, but it was about 10C cooler than it could be later.

I was inspired to get out by this piece by @trevor.george. He's about the same age as me and if he can tackle an ultra with a bad leg then I can do a quarter marathon in good weather and health. I suggest you read his post and show him some support. This is the sort of post that should really be trending.

I started off on my usual loop, but decided to try and add some extra kilometres. I started up the hill I take on the way to parkrun, but ran out of steam and had to walk up the last bit. Then I headed along the edge of a big field of wheat or similar cereal. You can see there is a lot of that around here, but the lack of rain must have affected the yield. Somewhere around here the Endomondo app decided to stop tracking my run. It may be something to do with me using the camera.

It was a few km later that I realised I was not getting updates from the app and restarted it. This may be my longest run in a while at around 11 or 12km. A few minutes after the restart it said I'd done a km in under 3.5 minutes. I don't believe that. I think the average times are about right, but these spurious splits are annoying and mess up my stats. These are the two parts that did get tracked. Ultimately that doesn't really matter as it's about getting out and running.

Run

Breakfest after the run had some added berries from the garden. I had blackcurrants, blackberries, gooseberries and jostaberries. The strawberries were bought as ours have finished. I needed some ice in my OJ and water to cool me down. It's an opportunity catch up on some news in The Guardian.

Have a great day and run free! Support the runners on #RunningProject.

I'm tagging some of my posts with @steemitworldmap as they don't have much around here.

I miss your cat having breakfast with you after a run.
Get the new cat see if they are interested.

That field looks like it is dried up. Still it made a lovely photo.
You planned this one right running before it gets too hot.

The new cat hasn't been on the table yet. We shall see...

Everything here is dry, but those crops turn yellow anyway

I believe that the reason why those fields are uniformly yellow is because of desiccation. A terrible process to make crops easily harvestable. They spray glyphosate over the entire crop to kill it evenly.
The problem is that glyphosate kills more than just they crop intended and that long term studies have shown that it is a carcinogen. People that live near an area where they are spraying have a much higher chance of getting cancer.

Studies have also show that higher than allowed amounts
of glyphosate are found in the water supply of nations that allow the use of Round-up.

Its another example of mega corporations (Monsanto/Bayer) in control of any thing is not a good thing for the citizens of any nation.

I could site many articles and many cases of these studies but I will let you decide if you care. If you do you will look into it yourself. Here is a good place to start

There are various things farmers do that can harm us, but these may just be like that due to several weeks with no rain. Wheat has been turning golden for centuries

We finally got a little bit of relief this past weekend. It was only around 70, but the humidity was still high. We got a bunch of rain though, and that is great for the crops. I was worried the farmers were going to lose a bunch for a while there...

Awesome run there, well done on being motivated, getting out and getting it done! It’s very rewarding and a great challenge. I cycle quite a lot but in recent years have enjoyed running much more.

Enjoy the heat back home! It won’t last long but it’s great to see what a lovely summer we have had... I’m actually in Thailand doing a Muay Thai camp at the moment so a different type of intensity and heat but hopefully we still have nice weather in mid August when I return. Although I’m sure most of you in England want it to cool down a bit. I love England in the sun! It’s great:) enjoy! 🌅

Never heard of jostaberries before. Are they similar to anything particular or unique?

Endomondo seems to be quite buggy. Does it get updated at all?

They are a cross between blackcurrants and gooseberries. I like them and we have loads. Endomondo is still getting updated. I just left a comment on the playstore about my issues. Looks like they do respond. I paid for the premium version for ages.
