So..Bitcoin has been embroiled in a bitter war over it's blocksize for nearly 3 years now and with still no end in sight. In Steem land, a problem pops up one night, and Steem increases it's blocksize the next day..just in time for tea.

Yea, steem is super badass. Something I noticed early on was that posting about a problem actually had relevant responses from people that can influence a solution showing up for some of the things I mentioned in my first few days. I got the impression these things are actually acted upon and worth talking about. On any other platform I just sit back and watch it burn because I know talking about their problems won't result in any changes being made, but around here it's a whole different story.

blocksize shouldnt be a bigger problem for steem,
steem will probably have problems when it comes to payouts when 2,3 million people will be active and everyone will look for a piece of the cake.
the major problem can be the distribution of the payouts

Its good to see that this was resolved so quickly as anything could have happened if it dragged out for too long.. Moreover we are still in Beta so this should improve confidence overall in the platform.

So, the real question here: how did they do it? From my very limited understanding, it's the witnesses who determine where the steem blochain goes.
Devs could issue a fork, and then the witnesses simply agree to implement it at a given time? But if this was the case, why haven't we heard of this plan at all? surely the witnesses must have discussed this before reaching a consensus, right?
Would love to have an explanation or a link on how they did it so smoothly!
I think with Steem, the block size is simply a parameter that the witnesses set, the same as how they control the interest rate paid on holding SBD. Since that functionality is already inbuilt, no forks are required. Each witness just makes their changes independently and the blockchain dynamically adjusts, possibly with an average value that reflects the overall consensus. (I could be wrong on some points, I invite correction from any witnesses!)

The witnesss's set the block size. With witness consensus it can change. There was a problem with the 65K block size, Witness's heard your voice and we changed it to make Steemit better..

WOW this was unbelievable fast, I thougt it will take min a week or longer to convince the TOP20 to increase the blocksize. Could you explain how/why the decission went to 98304, i thought there was 131072 in the discussion.

Sorry I don't have time to read all the comments here Neo...neck deep in a comment posting challenge and still get'n slammed by that wall...sometimes every 2 posts...too often for my liking but not something I can't handle if I pace myself through the next 24 hrs...say an easy 7 or 8 quality comment average per hour...I'm certain I'm not causing any strain on the chain.

Really love steem. Too bad BTC is having difficulty, hoping the August 1st fix will take care of the high fees. SO then I will transfer all my BTC to Steem. can't now because of crazy BTC fees.

Wow, this is amazing that Steem can just do it without a hardfork. That makes it very flexible blockchain, don't you think? Since Steem is being traded more than BitCoin (something I read in a post from two months ago, please correct me or point me to where I can see that for myself), the higher blocksize will come in handy I suppose.
