Solar Sinter
Project that uses sunlight and sand to 3D print objects

Hunter's comment
One of the biggest challenges that our planet faces today is the increasing concern about energy production and sources of raw materials. In the desert, we have the sun's full energy with endless supply of sand. So why don't we utilize those resources? This project did!
How about calling this "3D sand printer" or "desert 3D printer"? The presentation was a successful experiment where the device was able to print different glass objects using sunlight and sand.
The setting up of the device may look inconvenient at first but if this is further enhanced and eventually evolved, this will be the future of 3D printing using only sunlight and sand. This device will provide opportunity for use of desert and change our perspective about it to be just barren land.
Or maybe this can be used not only in deserts but anywhere sunny and with sand. That will be a great opportunity!

Great technology that can turn sand into something.. With using the solar energy, it will save the use of fuel instead the renewable energy
I fully agree. This is one of the most innovative invention I have seen so far.
My first thought is that they should have put that bad boy on tracks or something instead of having to drag it across the sand. Seriously, a very innovative idea and project to use and endless (hopefully) power source - the sun, and a nearly endless material - dessert sand, for 3D printing. Very clever.
Hahaha! I was actually thinking that they should have cut that dragging part and went on with the setup. But I guess it is part of the video effect.
I watched the video and saw that it is really difficult to prepaire it. It is already heavy and it must be horizontal. But if you have a business you can use it easily. Finally it creates amazing things.
Well, they could have actually just put it in the truck and put it down somewhere they want to set it up. But as I mentioned on my replies to other comments here, I think that is part of the video effect to somehow show the possible difficulty that comes with it. :)
It's really cool and amazing hunt @macoolette... From the nature energy and nature source of raw materials.. Hopefully your hunt will get first leaderboard today because it's great innovation in technology.
Wow, I am crossing my fingers to that. Thank you very much for your well wishes! :)
They have developed a great project. In the future, more energy will be needed. The idea of providing energy from the sun is excellent, and this project will save money.
I agree this will save money because it will be one-time investment that can be used over and over again. Let us hope projects like this would really prosper.
Thanks for dropping by my hunt. :)
Cool! The idea of this one was indeed flawless, I believe sand is made of silicone which is one of the most abundant natural resources in the planet and secondly is the witty idea of using sun as another source of energy placing it in deserted land was dashing. I love the idea, great hunt! I will give this one a score of 5 out of 5.
Wow, thank you very much for your perfect score! Indeed, this is a very innovative project. :)
This is really cool.
Technology is really making lives better everyday by exploring the nature to bring out the best.
I love this Solar Sinter
I like that. Who would actually think that desert sand which seem to be useless can be very useful.
Thanks for dropping by my post. :)
It is a very smart idea to use solar energy and sand together for 3D print objects. It sounds unbeliable but I hope it will be successful. PErfect hunt.
It was successful as shown on the video with the testing. The question is will they be able to sustain the manufacturing of such device and how they will make it available to glass manufacturing industries when it only works on solar panel.
Thanks for dropping by.
This is a good way to use the natural resources that are abundant. A 3D printer using the sun's heat to melt sand and is also powered by solar energy is just so cool. Expecting to see more work being done to make it look better.
Thanks for sharing...
I agree. it is a great way to utilize what we initially think as "useless" resources like the sand.
Thanks for dropping by.
Using natural resources without harming natural resources is a smart solution. If I were in the countryside, I'd take this product. It uses sand and sunlight to generate energy.
I totally agree. It is also a way to utilize resources that are not being used like the sand.
Thanks for dropping by.
pros:
great and sophisticated
able to print different glass objects using sunlight and sand.
very helpful
cons:
Thanks for your review. :)
What a great idea to use solar energy and limitless sand as a source. I watched the video and one of the best idea I have ever heard. Great hunt.
I agree it is one of the best. I actually did not expect this one to be possible. But apparently, this is how science and technology can do to improve our lives. 😊
Super amazing product that can change the world. It's basically Llysfaen a mix of 2 of my favourite kinds of products. This will literally change the faeces of desserts if we put effort into promoting this.
I hope they will built the product to print other material too 😊😊
You mean materials other than glass? Oh, I too hope so. Who knows that may be their next project. :)
This is an amazing innovation for 3D printer.
I think the only problem with this product is we can't use this product in an environment like rainy or cloudy weather.
Yes, that is why I wanted to call it desert printer. 😊
WOW this in INNOVATION...
I understand that the desert sand does not have the same value as sand from other places, and even Dubai imports sand, being so close to deserts.
I'm glad they found a kind of benefit to this type of sand.
Exellent hunt
Oh, I did not know that so thanks for the trivia.
Yes, this is a very goood innovation to make use of something that is initially thought useless.
Thank you.
Now this is a great combination. Combining two new technologies to produce something great. Solar renewable with 3d printing. Really innovative. Great one.
Thank you.
I've never heard of this combination (sun and sand) for 3D printing. Nice alternative to have.
Well, this is it. :)
3D printing will be taking a very interesting turn with this technology. Granted, it's pretty absurd to be printing 3D objects out in the desert, I mean who has the time, right? But you're right, once this technology is developed, we'll no longer be dependent on electricity and expensive powders, filaments, or liquids used for 3D printing. We can just use regular, inexpensive (and sometimes free) sand and take our printer somewhere it can be exposed to light, and we're good to go. Sustainable and eco-friendly.
I fully agree. The video alone shows the difficulty at the start but as the saying goes, the end justify the means. :)
Incredible ! the best video I have seen for a long time. Creativity has no limits.
I fully agree. Innovations too.
OH
sand?
the Arabians will be the next gen 3D printing tech scientist
The arabians will be happy. 😊
Super Cool Hunt @macoolette
This is really cool gadget formed from combination of two unlimited resources-sand and the sun. The power for battery is provided through the solar panels-so that makes it's life always long lasting.
Cons
The 3D printing solar sinter seems to be easily affected by sandstorm that occur in desert. So, it might be a difficult task to keep it safe in the desert. You need to have a secure room to keep it safe. Also the assembling of the parts seems somewhat complex. Otherwise, it is great.
Hehehe... I actually thought of the difficulty in bringing the device to the desert. I wondered why they have to include that when they can just take it off and start with when the device is already working. But I guess it is part of the video effect to show the challenge in spite of what it can do. :)
Thank you for your well thought of feedback. :)
🙂 I have a hope that it will be portable one someday once it comes to real life use😃
Portable! Wow, that's really promising! I may get one if that happens. :D

I wonder what made you say this? Have you found anything on the website that mentioned about its cost versus the traditional source of energy?
The design and the purpose are for specific place and time with the sun up and shining bright so of course, it will not be available everywhere.
expensive compared to old Energy
needs special sorrounding conditions
not everywhere available
I will not call it expensive just because of the solar panel. Any investor will invest on the panels for one time and reuse it countless times with just one-time spending. Energies from coal or nuclear needs to be spent on every time you use it so that will be more expensive in the long term.
I also will not call it negative if it can not be used everywhere because again, that is part of the design of the device.
Wow what a nice Produkt that uses materials that we have more than we could use top make Something usefull. ^^
I agree. With this device, maybe someone, or any business men, can put up a glass manufacturing plant in the desert. 😊

I wonder how long the process takes to make one pound of glass. It looks like each whole solar panel is around 100 watts maybe and that huge transparent plane is probably a fresnel lens to concentrate the sunlight for heat.
Very good question! I don't know the answer. :D
I checked the website and there is nothing much mentioned in there. I am just thinking it may take sometime at first because the project presented was just for testing. But it was in 2011, 7 years ago, so that actually makes me wonder what happened to the project. I hope it was pursued with further enhancements.
Congratulations!
