Would you buy a Steem account for a friend with Steem or SBD?

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

I recently proposed to the Steemit team to add a feature to allow Steemian's to create accounts for their friends via Steemit. By coincidence, this feature was added shortly thereafter to http://busy.org and @timcliff made a post about it here:
https://steemit.com/news/@timcliff/new-tool-from-busy-org-create-new-steem-blockchain-accounts-with-steemconnect

Personally, I'm very excited about this feature because it seems like one of the best ways to validate users as "real people" for onboarding purposes. This method of account creation gets around the faucet abuse problems with previous methods, because the Steemian would actually have to make a gift of some Steem to their friend to create the account (with the faucet method, accounts were paid for by Steemit, and some people went so far as to fake their identities to get lots of accounts). I think people are already primarily brought to Steem by friends, and I don't think it's a great leap that people would be willing to buy or at least loan Steem to a friend to create an account for them.

Anyways, I'm mainly posting this to get other people's opinions on this. Would you create accounts for your friends this way? Or, have you used it already? If so, any comments on the experience? Do you think there should be a direct link on steemit.com to the account creation page?

yes this is awesome, that way we can offer a Steemit account to our friends or relatives as a gift, the link on Steemit.com is a must ! resteemed

Awesome advice...hope they bite! lol

i agreed to you :)

Why not. I used that feature already.

@blocktrades, it's an awesome idea and I would buy a few of my family and friends steemit accounts. i would like for my young boys to have accounts as well. They are too young now, but for future use and so I can tag them in my posts.

I figure if I could start gifting them Steem Power now, they could have some serious Steem Power in the future.

This feature actually exists today: usage is documented in timcliff's post, if you want to give it a try. I'm hoping a good response here on this post will get a link on steemit.com so the feature has more visibility. If you do wind up using it, please post your thoughts about it afterwards here.

@blocktrades, I delegated 20 Steem to each of my sons, so they can have early accounts here on steemit. They won't be active for some time, but their steemit accounts are ready when they are.

My plan is: whenever I post about one of my sons or post regarding both of them, I will transfer a percentage of the steem power to both their wallets. A steem power savings account for both of my precious boys.

I wanted to do it once, but because I never hold liquidity, I was not able to, it would have been nice to add the SBD option as well.

I would. Considering I've had many dear friends sign up and some find it difficult or time consuming
As a user whos actively marketing and promoting steemit I'd love to be able to instantly create an account for a friend during a discussion and hand it over immediately and get them to start using it the minutes after creation. I could get 3x the signups i am currently. :)

Great idea. I wasnt a content supplier and had to be placed on the waiting list due to not having a Facebook/Reddit account. I signed up in Aug and was accepted in Dec. I have more than 10 friends who want to sign up.

It's nice to be able to get an account verified right away... Yes I am going to use it for family/friends, but I haven't as of yet.

Thanks for the always great service blocktrades, I use you guys over shapeshift. 👍

By the way, last night I created an account for my nephew using steemconnect. It was very easy, I just had to pay 6 steem to create it. The 6 steem went to his steem power, I told him the first 6 steem he makes is mine. 😁

Yes... I also have made one account for my daughter. I use busy.org as @timcliff write on his posting. :)

Do you think there should be a direct link on steemit.com to the account creation page?

Yes, sort of like an invitation, would help steemit viral growth!

yes, that would help out the beginners out a lot im sure.

I would... especially since the blockchain would show who is creating friend accounts to keep abusers out of the way. I man, I don't have 9999 friends, and if my account created that many.. well.. then you know something fishy is going on..

Personally, I'd like to see new accounts have to serve some sort of probationary period. If you don't write "ever"... or get upvoted "ever"... then perhaps after 30 days the account gets released again.

I don't know... as long as we can stop name hoarders from buying up every cool name in existence... I'm all for it.

Sounds like an awesome idea, i would be willing to open a account for a friend and send some sbd there way. In my opinion this would make it easier to get people to our platform.

I hear it the first time and find the idea nich bad. However, I also consider that this system might be abused. Maybe I think because synonymous wrong and everything would run without problems....

My opinion is that creating an account for friends would not be a problem personally for me, the main thing is that friends want it. So far I have not done this, so it's hard for me to give my experience. Link to the account creation page would be logical. Maybe someone has other opinions, it's interesting

If I had a friend who wanted an account I would be happy to create one for them this way if they wanted. However I don't know if it's a mechanism which should be overly publicized, as it could lead to trouble from some with more questionable intentions.

A direct link would be great! It would be put to use for sure!

I think most steemians will do for their family and friends. @blocktrades

Its definitely something to think about, but probably need to be monitored... people would always find a way around the system....fake accounts should definitely be taken serious as well...I still see promotional videos through youtube, advertising time at peak hours on major media house and a general regional tour in various places would help grow Steemit....

I've made accounts for a few people, the process was quick and easy - I'd love to see the feature built into the steemit interface directly

This is an excellent idea.

Definitely would do this, I have s specific friend in mind for it already.

This feature actually exists today, usage is documented in timcliff's post. I'm hoping a good response here on this post will get a link on steemit.com so the feature has more visibility.

Hi @blocktrades. The latest pull request that I submitted to the condenser repository will add info on using SteemConnect under the question "What are other ways to create an account on the blockchain besides using Steemit.com?". This should at least help.

I think having it in a more prevalent / built-in part of the site though would be really good, since it would get it a lot more exposure than being tucked away in the FAQ.

A link on steemit would make ease of use go through the roof in regard to this. Appreciate you creating buzz for it.

Absolutely that's a great idea. I actually just sent a friend the @steemit website link if this was in place I could've easily set her up myself.

I know many people that would be great Steemers but they are too lazy to make an account. Maybe this could be useful

It's an interesting idea alright, and yes at least if someone is willing enough to invest some of their steem into the person they should at least be real!

I wonder could it ever be made to sell a steem account? Say if you needed money fast and couldn't wait for the power down to complete, you could sell your account with all your steempower in it to someone obviously for a lower price then it's worth!

Oh and now I'm suddenly getting thoughts of all the account names that sometime in the future could well be worth a hell of a lot!

Yes, there's been a number of name-squatters who've accumulated names for their potential future value. At least this method forces them to pay for the privilege. It is possible to sell an account now, it's been done a few times, although it's not totally trivial to do.

The potential future value of some names could be very lucrative.

Amazingly @rte was not taken, until I took it.

Lucky!!!! That's the retirement fund sorted!

Have yet not used it, but certainly would. Yes, I do support the idea of a direct link on steemit, as opening up of accounts for new ones at times takes very long. So it seems necessary to reduce the hurdles in order to speed it up:

Sounds ok to me :-) Considering people make multiple accounts for themselves anyways there would be no higher risk than there is...

I want my mother to join actually, she has no creative outlets at the moment but technology kind of scares her away. I would gladly make her an account to ease her in, that would be awesome!

Yes. I would.

Sound a good idea but its not a guarantee to keep then here, maybe they get there bonus when they have wrote so many posts or reached a higher Rep :)

Good idea!!
And add an affiliate feature so people actively look for good bloggers.
Have a nice one :-)

We'd need some kind of referral system as well, where if I create their account, I get maybe 1% of their post rewards for a year.

That could be a big form of abuse. Someone could buy a bunch of accounts and just have them post and upvote each other endlessly. Affiliate schemes tend to attract scuzzy people, in my opinion 🤷🏽‍♀️

There is nothing in Steem that cannot be abused. It's just a matter of how effectively we can police it.

True, I just think any kind of affiliate system is very carefully reviewed and considered. Also, an affiliate program can project a scammy appearance and could scare off new people who may already be confused about how money is "made out of thin air" on Steemit. I probably wouldn't have signed up if there was mention of affiliate because I've been burned so many times by "products" presented to me that only serve to enrich the referrer aka clickbank type junk. IMO steemit sells itself and doesn't need MLM style tactics to grow. Basically I'm allergic to the word "affiliate" and also "downline" "backoffice" "matrix" etc... I can just imagine some shady internet marketer coming up with a "product", something like "Learn how I made $XXXxx in five hours by using this new emerging tech!" And then charge $47.95 for a five page ebook, steemit account and a bunch of "training videos" where they spend 75% of the time going off topic and pushing more of their products...

Sorry for the rant...! 😬

i already created one account from busy, paid for it. I like the option

I'll do it if friends want to join.

I haven't use it but i think is a good idea. Yes I'm going to use it to create account for family members , friends or even not for profit organization that want to try Steemit. I support it.

Indeed, the account will just need a simple comment that I created to this account for .... then its verified. Aside from the fact that it can be seen internally by the admin. No need for verification, I guess

Yes, all day yes.

Sure, it will act like a marketing tool. We can use affiliate links , and if someone is recommending someone it makes sure that person will contribute to the platform. Looking forward to it.

Steemit.com should give three options for getting an account:

  1. Get a free account from Steemit.
  2. If you already know somebody who uses Steem, you can ask them to create an account for you.
  3. Buy an account. Currently there is AnonSteem, but of course it would be better if there were more cryptocurrencies accepted, or even fiat-currencies.

When a new user buys an account, they could also pay some extra and get more SP immediately. It would be very easy way to invest in Steem.

I suggested almost a year ago that Steemit should have an easy way to buy new accounts.

I pretty do buy my friends and family steemit accounts by me giving them bitcoin which they purchase STEEM/SBD which they POWER UP into Steem Power.

So if steemit in the future is no longer free...

I still would give them the bitcoin or STEEM/SBD so they can be a part of my life...on steemit.com

I would endorse and use this feature!

yes but not sure if they would use it often enough. but its a good idea.

I would... if I had any friends.

well, I think Vera deserves one at least...

Funny you should mention that...

Haha nice one

When you had to buy an account - did not know where ((
Kind people helped with registration for free
Upvote please @blocktrades. Need SP! Thank you all...

I made an account for my wife on anonsteem.

Honestly I never think of that, this is an awesome idea, tho I am a newbie here, found that steemit is really a good platform, your post inspires me , cheers man! have a good day!

I'm seeing this way late, but that's a great development and I'll surely use it when trying to get friends onto the platform! Having a bit of value already in an account that was gifted will probably do wonders on making sure new members remain active as well.

I do think this should be a feature directly implemented into steemit.com, to make it easier to find and use.

Considering @timcliff was the hero of the year for me yesterday, (he helped me set up my account), I'd say I approve of being able to buy friends steemit accounts.

Thank you very much for suggesting this @blocktrades.

After battling two months and trying with 3 different cell phone numbers I was no closer to getting a Steemit account for my brother.
Then I eventually found the post by @timcliff which was a total life saver.

I do however think Steemit devs must somehow try and limit it to stop abuse to maybe a certain number accounts per month allowed for creation.

But overall a very handy feature.

I don't mind the slightest to donate some of my own Steem to get an account for a family member or close friend.

User acquisition is no doubt one strategic objective that needs to be worked on. I like Seth Godin insight on this; where it's best to implement and test different marketing tactics i.e. put in action to establish what really works and what not. So I'd say open up various ways for people to sign up (and make them visible and clear at steemit homepage); along with how-to-videos for the different proposed ways of signing up. Referral is no doubt one good way, and that's how I got to learn about steemit in fact. Of course a little incentive e.g. couple of SBD or SP would be nice if offered for referring.

This is such a great idea , I have many friends and family who'd like this idea
