"Begging" on social media

in #steemit8 years ago

I’ve seen a number of article/comments on SteemIt, and other social media channels, asking for money. These include giving sad stories about somebody in the family needing medical attention or losing everything because of a natural disaster.
I would be interested in hearing what people think about such postings.

Do people just shut themselves off and go to the next article?
Do they automatically believe what the poster is writing?
Do they actually pay the writer something?
Is it right that people should try to single themselves out for help in such a way?

My most important question is, would you ask for money on social media if you found yourself in a desperate situation? What if it was, say, the only way to help a family member?

I would find it very difficult to directly ask for money. I notice that even ordinary posters sometimes include their bitcoin addresses in their texts, effectively asking for a donation. Can you imagine how it would be if everybody did it?

Sort:

I have volunteered at food kitchens and homeless shelters and know there are people with a need. I have been scammed by some in not-so-much-of-a-need, but, I cannot be the world's conscience. If I am moved by it, I will. If I give it, it has to be without strings or regrets. Period. No upvote as I am out of voting power. But, I can resteem!

"I cannot be the world's conscience"

Too true!

(Thanks for the resteem!)

The pleasure is all mine.

Yeah it would be pretty close to what we have now.

But you are the one who decides if it is worth it or not. I think anyone is allowed to do it.

What do you think about using Steemit to get money. Wouldn't that be close to that ? Or simply doing a post. would it be considereded as asking for money ? Ask for an upvote would be the new begging ?

The idea behind SteemIt is that authors are rewarded for quality post. Authors are paid for entertaining readers. But you are correct, a lot of it is tantamount to begging, although not directly.

"I think anyone is allowed to do it."
I wasn't questioning whether it should be allowed or not. I'm just interested in what people's views are about it.

well in my point of view. I would do it.
And if it works perfect and if it doesn't oh well... It is another form to fund money, probably a somewhere in between working and stealing so I would much rather beg than steal.
I know there is lot of people out there with the means to help and that will not represent a difference in their lifestyle because of how deep their pockets are but it will certainly represent a difference in the life of the people they help.
So if they don't mind doing it I don't see why people should mind asking for it.
To receive you have to either earn, ask or take...

"To receive you have to either earn, ask or take..."
A perfectly honest truth.

I usually en up reading the story...but usually its easy to see those who fake it and those who really need it

And, if they really need it, do you give them something?

If I am in the position, then yes I do

social media is not the best place to ask for money because most people will never believe your story and they will take that person for being a beggar and being lazy to hustle for job. social media begging is just like a near mirror of the real thing in the word of form.i must say that i hate those who beg on social media. some of them just want to make public spectacle of themselve and perhaps their blog post

And, if you knew for sure that that person had a real problem though no fault of his/her own and that all other channels were closed to solving the problem?
This is not a criticism - I'm just interested in your view. I would find it difficult to give to one person when I know that there are many more people in the same position.

I had similar thoughts in the last few days. I'm trying to engage more with contents and users, so I'm reading tons of posts on various subject. And as you say, many people try to beg for money.
I'm aware that in the real world things may be struggling and gain a decent salary may be complicated, but considering the potential of this platform if I would ever be in need of money or help, I will try to do my best to gain it. Even more on steemit where with the right good content you have a chance to succeed in earning something.
Personally I've landed on this platform because I work with social media daily and I was curious to know more about it. I'm still studying it when I got time, But it is for a personal purpose. If I can earn something sharing my thoughts, even better.
that's said, I'm curious about other users idea about this topic! Thanks for sharing!

I think considering it's a new platform most people will use it for legitimate purposes but of course it can be abused.

What I will say though, that because it's voluntary to up-vote content or send a donation and it's decentralized currency, it may be morally wrong to mislead someone but it is your choice if you want to up-vote your content and waste your steem power on a post.

I guess it's why steemit is liked by so many because you can have somewhat of a say as to whether or not you would like others to see a particular type of content.

meh... when I see those I usually just move on.

I am too sure 99% of these are just shitheads looking for free money. It would probably be different if it was someone I had a connection with, but that hasn't been the case so far.

For the same reason I wouldn't do it myself... there's always a better option than begging, let alone begging from strangers on social media!

P.S.: I saw that comment on your previous post... and I guess I do NOT just move on... I had quite an urge to flag that!

Yep, I made some "GooglyEyes" at that post, too. :)
(If anyones's wondering what GooglyEyes are you'll have to look at @fraenk (how's that for a plug?))

haha... awesome! thanks for the plug!

#GooglyEyes

for some it would be considered ethical to donate but not on a social media platform just looks like hustle.
